>Has a normal life.
>Has a steady job.
>Has a nice house.
>Has a loving wife and kids.
>Has neighbors who respect him and his family.
>Throw it all out cause he wants to roleplay as a villain and threatens his neighbor, who was always good with him, in front of his godlike superheroine's daughters.
>he gets arrested and sent to jail, which affects his wife and kids mentally, making them as retarded as him, and they all get arrested, ruining your family name and lives.
Genuinely the stupidest person in Townsville, and this is remarkable since people in Townsville needed three little girls to show them how to function in one episode.

No one here is old enoughh to remember Manufacturing Malaise.
All the factory workers who complained they felt like cogs in the machine doing the same repetitive boring tasks untill the day they retired.
A lot of people thought off-shoring would mean those people could find new and more fufilling work with all that American know-how and saved wealth.
>>
It's kinda funny how the newer generations reject these types of stories where a character finds his stable life unfulfilling and meaningless so he goes for something new and exciting, regardless of the risk. It seems that people have become so materially destitute and their future so insecure that they will take any life that offers stability and wealth, regardless of how boring it is. I've seen people complain about the Matrix, Office space and a lot of other GenX media with this type of story structure.

because literally you could have a finically stable career at any level of life rather than barely scraping by as most of gen z is getting raped by corpo scum..
>>
>>153928946
>>153930077
Hierarchy of needs, anons. If someone has stability and the ability to feed themselves and their family, they start to focus more on their inner selves.

Plus, you have to remember the people who made these shows would probably find the “9 to 5” lifestyle insufferable.
>>
>>153930077
I was so excited when I got my first cubicle 3 years ago after working for 10 years as a security guard and a test technician. I didn't and still don't understand what's so bad about it.
>>
Gen Xers had it so good, they had nothing to fear but falling into normalcy and were more worried about not seeming cool than being alone, making ends meet or dying.
>>
>>153930125
It's not bad if you work with people who respect your space. But that's not always the case.
>>
>>153930128
Then their rejection of that normalcy so that everyone could "be true to themselves" and "fight those oppressive systems of normalcy" dragged our society beyond saving. Truly an enlightened generation.
>>
>>153930143
That's true. I also didn't need to be in my cube all day since I had a role that would let me go onto the floor and provide hands-on support. I got the better deal and I recognize that. Still really giddy to have had my own space. Techs often don't really get that.

I honestly figured the real reason Harold Smith went supervillain because he was jealous and super pissed at Professor Utonium for humble-bragging how much he loves his life and his daughters, and the fact he was too spineless to just tell his neighbor to shut up and mind his own shit was what basically drove him over the edge.

He's still pathetic and stupid, mind. But the fact he wanted to outright melt Professor Utonium's head clean off his shoulders tells me he didn't do it just as part of his gay outing, he decided he really wanted to fuck over the one man in town who basically allowed Harold Smith to have the averagely boring and unfulfilling life he does via creating the Powerpuff girls. All out of jealousy and spite.

This wasn't Gen-Xers hating their normal lives, it was liberal arts Gen-Xers expressing Sour Grapes and trying to convince themselves they would hate a more typical lot in life. OPs episode, The Matrix and Fight Club were all written by people who never experienced this life in the first place.
Office Space was the only one that came from an actual place of familiarity and you can tell because you're given active reasons to think working in an office sucks, not a vague sense of monotony or feeling destined for greater things.

>find it way, way easier to actually come into work each day since I dont have to deal with """"""people""""""" all day except on the phone
The folks who think office work is sheer drudgery are the ones who need to be out and about doing something physical. If we had a better means to direct the right people to the right jobs we'd all be better off, id say

>>

Office Space was attacking the system at large. It wasnt the job that sucked so much as the asshole bosses that made everything so miserable.
Fight Club was about gay guys trying thier damndest to not actually be gay

I hold resentment at a part of myself for being unable to appreciate my current situation in life and always wanting more.

To try and avoid humble-bragging, I’m currently living a lifestyle some people couldn’t even dream of, and my mind hasn’t been satisfied with it since I was a brainless child. It’s highly frustrating.

It's stems from "underachievers" trying to justify their complacency by convincing themselves they are actually capable of things that could alter history, but just don't feel like it. A way to feel superior to your peers while not actually being superior to your peers.

Honestly it kind of does and that's a bit of the point. Having all your needs met means you can do whatever the hell you want. That was the true moral and point of Office Space and many of these office comedies is telling people to stop living for others and live for yourself no matter how simple and dumb it is.

The issue however is that life isn't that simple for everyone, and now it's a huge majority of those people who when their boss gives them extra work and they say "No, unless I get paid more" will get met with "ok then go look for a new job"

I think it’s more that this kind of thing is the epitome of first world problems and what the people were mad about was not the actual issue. Like I remember that whole speech Tyler gives in fight club about working a job you hate to buy shit you don’t need but like why buy shit you don’t need? Who the fuck would they be trying to impress? The narrator is a loner even before his apartment blows up? Why would he need to by a bunch of shitty furniture to gussy up his apartment when he’s not going to be having anyone over? And why not just buy shit that makes him happy? Like the whole point of the job is to find a way to make enough until you have fuck you money in which case you can economically emancipate yourself. Leave the city, buy some fucking property, build a nice house there and then do whatever while generating consistent revenue however you can. You don’t need to be a fucking drone to do that.

This is called water fasting and a lot of people do it regularly. Two weeks will not kill you unless you're diabetic or already extremely malnourished. You do usually have to take electrolyes to sustain normal neurological function, though. When I do it, my heart feels funny after 3 or 4 days unless I take electrolytes.

> It seems that people have become so materially destitute and their future so insecure that they will take any life that offers stability and wealth, regardless of how boring it is
This is a part of it, but I feel like another important thing is that having hobbies or interests, enjoying simple entertainment even as an adult and generally building a life outside of your job has became much, much more normalised in the last 2 decades or so, especially among the young generation.
What they want is a simple, stable and unstressful job that allows them to enjoy their actual lives outside of work, not a career that dominates their life and is a life goal unto itself

the people stuck in a cubicle were told that the work would be meaningful
it wasn't, middle management treats them like children, they already tied themselves down to so many other expenses that they can't just leave the job because they're also told that there's nothing better out there and they are treated as ever more replaceable

notice how for many tech based jobs they went from advertising the jobs as ones for nerds who want to shape the future to a bunch of influencers who only do 2 hours of work a day while the rest of their schedule is filled with going to the gym, eating lunch at expensive cafes and having the longest morning routine possible

it went from "the best are working here" to "its not that hard work!"

This has nothing to do with effort or skill but with ambition. I can grind hard for some shitty job, putting in a lot of effort and sacrificing extra time and energy for the sake of it. I did that for most of my life. Did it make me feel happy or fulfilled? Fuck no, just tired, miserable and with 0 time for things that actually matter to me.
Career is a fucking lie. It may work for some people I guess, good for them, but I've never been happier since I've realised that I don't actually care about this rat race, switched to an easy half time job and actually started having time for my close ones, my hobbies and myself.

Where did you think you were going as a security guard or box humper at a warehouse?
There's a reason security guards were old retired cops, theres a reason day labor was done by ex-felons.
You dont take a job without skills and knowledge to do more and expect to get promoted

What degree do you have?
What skills did you learn?

People who have nothing tangible to offer think they deserve more without actually knowing what those jobs require. Go back to school get in a course for something you dont know, and then actually try to get an A, dont scrape a C smoking pot and call it good

One is cultural and yours is economic. Both can be true.
>>
>>153935352
>One is cultural
A society with good economics can withstand any tantrum its members can have. Hippies were a huge annoyance back then and it took only a few years for them to drop the arms. Early millenials having a 30 year old crisis and choosing to cope by becoming hyper aggressive in whatever socio-political movement there was at the time isn't something that crippling.

Issues like prices skyrocketing and money's value going down sure are
>>
>>153935073
>People who have nothing tangible to offer think they deserve more without actually knowing what those jobs require
That's my entire point, dipshit. I don't think I deserve more. I stopped caring about "more" because always reaching for "more" isn't worth squat in the end. What I want is to have "just enough" and actually have the time and energy to live my life instead. Zoomers tend to reach that mindset much, much sooner and good for them I say.
And before you get smug again, no, I wasn't doing some shit tier entry job either, but work in a generally respected field I've studied for for years. It actually paid very good money, family was proud of me, whatever. But so what if it took 90% of my time, energy and mental resources.
I don't want to live for work, just work so I can live. That's the point.

You'd be surprised how many people are miserable because they chose a career that didn't fulfill them emotionally. We can talk about how a lot of modern jobs are designed to socially atomize people or how the 9 to 5 schedule is fucked up, but people can weather the pains if they do something that makes them happy.

Harold was miserable because all he did for most of his life was just work. It wasn't even a job he actually liked doing! Harold would have been happier had he picked a job that made him fulfilled or fixated on a hobby/interest on the side that brought him joy.

while all work has boring parts or require a lot of boring repetitive work to reach the level of competence required to make a living from it, there is a huge difference in emotional satisfaction you get in different types of work

spending 8 hours a day cutting onions for a restaurant isnt thrilling work, but you do get some satisfaction at the end of the day knowing you made something meaningful
8 hours a day screwing caps on toothpaste tubes like a machine isnt that much worse on the face of things, but its much more tiresome and draining on the person knowing that your end product is going to be an expendable product

artisans had to spend a hundred hours doing boring stuff like screwing screws just like ford workers did, but ford workers had insane turnover in their workforce due to how much more emotionally taxing reducing people down to simply being the rivet gun guy was

Normies hate the cube (Saturnian black cube, the material world created by the Demiurge) while the autist embraces the cube.

The normie sees being boxed in as a trap, a prison, and an obstacle. It is Hell, a burning house that prevents them from realizing Nirvana. There's nowhere else to go but what remains in the box, which is just them and their minds. Hell is other people...and we're all people.

An autist sees it differently. It is Nirvana, free from the rest of the material world that is in truth, one massive cube that normies are in denial of. It is an escape, a freedom, and an opportunity to create your own world with your own rules. Everything is exactly by design, a happy routine. There is nothing to do but think and do...an artisan's heaven.

You need to understand, this shit is from such a plentyful peaceful era that monotony was generally perceived exclusively in the way women perceive it, i.e. as horrible as death/torture, "ah I'm so accomplished and successful and people love me and I have my own house and no crushing debt and no need of mine is ever neglected and I had sex with someone that loves me and didn't kill my kids and I will grow old to watch my own personal legacy lovingly pass on and achieve the american dream... B-BUT IS THAT ALL THERE IS TO LIFE UGH IM SO BORED UGH I WANNA DIE UGH I WANNA DO COKE AND BANG WHORES AND KILL PEOPLE UGH I WISH THE TWIN TOWERS FELL SO I COULD DO COKE AND HOOKERS AND KILL AND TORTURE PEOPLE ON IRAQ ALL AROUND ME ARE FAMILIAR FACES WORN OUT PLACES WORN OUT PLACES.

It's literally retarded rich spoiled kids having it all and not liking it because they never suffered not having it.

The truth is you can have everything in life, or nothing at all and still not be happy. Happiness is found in you if you're happy you are, if you aren't you aren't. I tend to flip-flop myself. Hell some people have kids to see what it's like to be happy and try to feel childhood happiness from them, before the world crushes them and you want to to help but you're dying faster than they are catching up to you, so you just throw money at them to shut them up, which is a shame cause you might’ve bought a night with that one hooker. No no not the pricey one, still gotta eat that midtier looking one. She seems to have her drugs under control. >Most young people can't really afford a good life despite working and are getting increasingly disillusioned
>Most societies are rapidly ageing which will only put more and more strain on the already falling system
>AI also makes this even worse with big layoffs and killing many professions people actually are passionate for
>Most societies are becoming extremely politically polarised and generally dumbed down
>Social trust, safety and in some cases public services are going down the drain in many countries
>Climate crisis won't be stopped without policies that would reduce the living standards people are used to so much that they will never be passed, which in turn will massively fuck up agriculture and cause new waves of climate migrants in the coming decades
There is no big apocalyptic event coming as far as we know, but the last decade has clearly shown that the current social and economical system is just not sustainable for much longer and people are becoming more and more aware and frustrated.
