Why didn't they just use Rainier Wolfcastle? You know, the character specifically created to parody Arnold. What were they thinking?
>>
They though casual wouldn't get the joke.
They underestimate the cultural impact of golden era of the simpsons.
>>
>>153929916
same reason they didn’t use Hank Scorpio
>>
>>153929916
Why would Wolfcastle destroy a town he has a home in?
>>
The most interesting thing to me about The Simpsons Movie is that the writers and higherups overthought literally everything about it. It feels so separate from the actual show as a result. The South Park and Beavis and Butthead movies didn’t feel a need to just completely change the overall feel of the characters/world, and those movies happened before those shows even reached their peaks yet. I don’t know why they thought so many people wouldn’t understand The Simpsons or why they felt that anybody who hadn’t already watched the show in it’s 20 years on the air at that point would go see the movie and be confused. It would be like if when they make the Rick and Morty movie they try to capture the audience of people who haven’t watched it ever. Why alienate fans at the expense of new viewers who have ignored a hugely popular show for decades?
>>
>>153930076
To be fair it would have been out of character when it came to Hank's relationship with Homer
>>
>>153930113
As someone who doesn't even hate the movie, it's total bullshit they actually did so many repeated plotlines from the show
>Lisa has a love interest that will go nowhere
>Bart has issues with Homer
>Homer and Marge's marriage is threatened
Bob's burger movie has a similar problem. Beavis and Butthead do America and Bigger, Longer, and Uncut actually feel like movies. Simpsons and BB movie aren't just long episodes, they're both long episodes that re do the most over used plots from the shows. Makes them feel like advertisements almost
>>
>>153930113
Expectations probably had a lot to do with it. The Beavis and Butthead and South Park movies released close to their peak popularity while the Simpsons movie languished in development hell, and the Simpsons name has more “prestige” for a lack of a better word.
>>
>>153930184
>and the Simpsons name has more “prestige” for a lack of a better word.
Not at that point in time. Less and less every passing season.
>>
>>153930184
Not doing the Simpsons movie in the 90's was a huge mistake.
>Kamp Krusty
Yeah I know, I don't think that was a good concept for a movie. It should have been a story in the lines of that early episode where Bart cuts the statue head, plus a big Mr. Burns plot.
>>
>>153930179
Beavis and Butt-Head do America is the gold standard in my opinion, it both feels like a long special and someone worth watching in the movie theater.
Even something as simple as the FBI agent thinking they are masterminds and handing cavity searches like candy does so much for the movie.
>>
>>153929916
They changed Moe's to "Moe's Bar".
>>
It's weird because he does just act as you'd expect Wolfcastle to. They definitely intended for it to be Wolfcastle but changed it because of this idea people wouldn't know who Wolfcastle was supposed to be.
>>153930076
Scorpio would have worked if they did a plot involving his super-villainy. It was obviously an early option they threw out, but he wouldn't work for the Dome/EPA storyline they came up with.
>>
>>153929916
you think the people who made the simpsons movie ever saw a single episode of the simpsons?
>>
>>153931240
You mean the regular show's crew? What's your point?
>>
>>153930076
they explicitly said they didn't use Hank because they didn't want to ruin the image he built up in You Only Move Twice.
>>
>>153931902
Fair enough, but what about Arnie?
>>
>>153931135
There's something darkly humorous about B&B and Spongebob remaining the best examples of the animated tv series to feature film adaption.
>>
>>153929916
Then they couldn't use Wolfcastle for anything else since he was president.
>>
I think the strangest thing is that it just shows what a loose parody Rainier Wolfcastle is of Arnie. There's a bunch of mannerisms and things every impressionist does of him that are missing from him because Rainier is more a broad parody of action stars and Germans(yes I know, Austrian) than Arnie specifically. He doens't have Arnie's cadence and doesn't drop any of his go-to sayings
>>
>>153931135
>it both feels like a long special and someone worth watching in the movie theater
Yeah it's also something you can just show someone as a general recommendation. All the other big tv show movies mentioned itt feel like you need to be somewhat familiar with the shows to really enjoy. Do America is just a straight up funny comedy film. I think Mike Judge is a big part of it too, he's a good director
>>
>>153932471
The Simpsons doesn't have a continuity, dumbass.
>>
>>153932725
I genuinely think Mike Judge is under rated as a director and writer. He's had a surprising amount of hits and cult classics and no one really knows that he's the guy that made Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill, Office Space, Silicon Valley, and Idiocracy.
>>
>>153930076
They didn't use Hank Scorpio because "He would never do that to Homer".
>>
>>153929916
They should have had a scene with them together like in Last Action Hero
>>
>>153933139
In the golden era it did
The movie had shit like the Simpsons house being at the very edge of town but when Dr Nick died they stuck with it for a few years
>>
>>153933190
very talented guy.
>>
>>153932407
Nothing strange about that, they’re both shows heavily driven by their creator ( at least while Hillenburg was alive, and at this stage of the show)
>>
>>153931902
>>153932082
They have used Hank multiple times in later seasons tho, mostly as small cameos or references to how the show has gone on too long, none really funny
>>153930122
>>153933747
Scorpio would work as a villain for a movie if you make him sympathetic and he reforms at the end, it would be more memorable if he was the villain, the original plot for "The Simpsons Hit & Run" had Hank as the main villain and in the end he would reform and apologize, the final game changed the villains to Kang and Kodos but the "super villain car" they designed for Hank Scorpio did make it into the final game
>>
>>153929916
Because executives are dumb and think that an extremely popular cartoon that has already proved myself needs to dumb itself down even more to make bank at the box office.

Similar thing happened with the first SpongeBob movie
>King Neptune got a complete redesign
>The trench instead of Rock Bottom
>Goofy Goober's instead of Weenie Hut Jr.
It's not as jarring in the SpongeBob movie because they were talented enough to weave these ideas in naturally but it still feels like an executive was telling them they couldn't use established things from the show for whatever reason
>>
>>153931240
Yes?
If I looked up the writers I'd half expect to see names that existed on episodes at the time.
>>153932407
>Spongebob
Enjoyable but I didn't like how it leaned hard into Spongebob's esoteric IRL references and inventing lore (Goofy Goober) that never existed in the show and never could.
Spongebob winning with a rock solo whilst Plankton was begging for him to stop was more queer than the normal fare. Almost prophetic of Steven Universe. Though I don't know how else he could have won, cooking a million patties wouldn't do anything and the story was about embracing childishness as manliness isn't for babies.

>King Neptune got a complete redesign
"We should give him a daughter voiced by a prolific jewish actress who's crowbarred into the story as the voice of reason who solves all the problems and tricks the protagonists but doesn't actually contribute to the plot herself"
"Wait, why?"
"Why the supporting role that could have been fulfilled by literally any other character, even Sandy if we wanted a token female in our boys cartoon?"
"No, why the jewish actress?"
"You wouldn't understand, she makes my peepee hard, and one day her wikipedia page will label her as a Sex Symbol"
>>

i thought Lisa was cosplaying as Frozen but snarkily making it about global warming and didn't realize everyone was next to a media empire logo
>>
>>153934433
>Goofy Goober's instead of Weenie Hut Jr.
but the point of the Weenie Hut Jr. episode was that Spongebob didn't want to be there
inventing a new place makes sense

Wasn’t the whole point that the trench was something they never dealt with before? Besides, they both have a completely different vibe.

To be fair, her role as Mindy was one of the few times you saw a major celebrity taking a voice role seriously. From going out of her way to take voice acting lessons to reprising for the video game borderline for free.

Sure, you have some live action celebrities who take it seriously today but back then, that was basically unheard of
>>
>>153930034
I don’t understand this, because Rainier Wolfcastle was clearly Arnold anyway. Causal viewers would know a Arnold impersonation. https://youtu.be/X93MBSvBSfc?si=Vg013q8rfvdbR-Em

She should get naked in animated form anyways, it would be a good sendoff before her VA dies (since Marge's VA and Burn's VA are the ones more likely to die soon, I mean just listen to their voices in the newest season)
>>
>>153934590
Homer. We'll get a scene of him jerking-off to a climax.
>>
>>153934417
>They have used Hank multiple times in later seasons tho, mostly as small cameos or references to how the show has gone on too long, none really funny
The difference is that the cameos in later seasons still didn't put him in the hot seat as the direct antagonist to the Simpsons. That was why they didn't want to use Hank in the movie, because the writers collectively agreed they didn't want to fuck with his friendship with Homer. You are right that all of the cameos are unfunny, though.

You made me picture a '90s Simpsons movie with cel animation and a more confident creative team not buckling under as much executive meddling or crazy expectations built up over twice as many years, and now I'm sad..

I think part of what helps Judge be such a great writer and director is that he actually lived and worked in the real world with real people before he decided to be an entertainer. Its not hard to imagine some of Beavis and Butthead was inspired by his co-workers in Silicon Valley talking about their idiot teenage sons and the stupid stuff they did but exaggerated for a cartoon. His stuff for the most part has that vibe of "I know someone who is just like that".

Really? First time hearing that. I always assumed Kodos and Kang were meant to be the villains to tie in with the final level being set on Halloween night and making references to Treehouse of Horror. Personally I don't think Scorpio is a villain who should reform. From his episode he just loves being a James Bond Supervillain so much, I mean he's having the time of his life when he goes KILL IT WITH FIRE on the soldiers invading his lair. Best to limit him to just his one episode or make him the final boss in a potential series finale though I don't know how it would work.

Did we ever get more information about why they switched up the design for Russ Cargill, if he was even called that when he looked like this. The change must have happened really late because I think there's a Burger King toy of this design.

My theory was that he was that sort of nebbish environmentalist type and maybe it just came off as a really hokey thing to be prodding a whole movie over. I'm really fascinated with the movie because it feels like there were a lot of 11th hour changes to it.

First thing that came to mind was an ordeal similar to the Rugrats movie, just set at Kamp Krusty. No idea what the B-plot could've been though.

I've heard it had something to do with test audiences thinking his conventionally ugly appearance made him too obvious as the villain.

The Beavis and Butt-Head one happened right at the show's peak.
>>
>>153932725
I respect Mike judge because he feels like a story teller that knows how to set up multiple punchlines in a natural way.

The amount of set up required for some pay offs in the end of his episodes or movies is admirable if you walk it back in reverse, it all starts so mundane but before you know it it's a recurring joke or a theme that is resolved in the end or builds as a punchline, just really good scripts all together.

Kind of, in the finished product he's overtly suave and conniving so it's obvious he's scheming something. It still clicks better because he looks and acts like a Bond villain like Hank Scorpio in the original version and that's more fun, for lack of a better word, than a generic ugly paper pusher.

>a love interest that will go nowhere

while the rest of this is just the fact that the Simpsons are forever a couple with 3 kids and 0 money and so will be forever experiencing the kind of things your whore of a father and bitch of a mother went through and you were too blind to notice, the only love interest that went nowhere that they could have had back is Sara Gilbert, but her character was a little old for Bart stories in the long term anyway, even assuming she wanted a full-time gig and they wanted her on Simpsons after Roseanne ended; and anons would just be bitching about Bart/Laura Powers love story/cockblock episodes or Laura Powers getting screentime/Laura Powers-type stories (whatever they ended up being) or Ruth Powers for the same reasons; even bringing them back once a year like Sideshow Bob might have been too much for today's modern go-getting boob untouchers; in the end it's probably more realistic that Bart falls for a succession of guest star girls and the Laura Powers teen freak role is filled by Chalmers' daugher Shoshanna or whatever the hell she's called

still tho, great voice
