I've never liked Liane's personality changeFor most of the show she's a promiscuous slut who spoils Cartman rotten, lets him get away with literal murder, and actively hinders attempts to make him more well-behavedNow she stands up to him more and we're all supposed to feel sympathy for her even though him ending up the way he is is her own fault and she only ever seems to put her foot down whenever he personally screws her over, like when they had to live in the hot dog

Liane's personality change is a side effect of this although it's more frustrating because they're trying to course-correct a horrible mother into a misunderstood gal who's a victim of her son while never addressing that she's one of the major reasons why Cartman turned out the way he is. This perspective, which has managed to embed itself into how the fandom view, and subsequently winge about how the early differ from the later one. That in some vague forgone epoch he was the illustration of a "mean but wholesome chunges". Child was scheming to make a quick buck so often in season 4, it was a borderline motif of that year ( "The Tooth Fairy Tats 2000", "Quintuplets 2000" ,"Something You Can Do with Your Finger","Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?", "Probably"). This trait of his had its start as far back as "Chef Aid". He constantly acted in self interest at the expense of others, he restarted the Confederate army in "The Red Badge of Gayness", he sent Butters to get raped by Nambla in "Cartman Joins Nambla" for no real reason. Scott Tenorman was the culmination of Cartman behaviour, not the start of it.
