Is this worth watching?

Yes

It's not like an amazing movie, if you look at it purely objectively, but it's pretty fun. I'd recommend it to most people. You definitely should just watch it if you have enough interest in it to post about it here.

It's a shitty Loony Tunes movie that's more of a glorified Nike ad and Michael Jordon is an awful actor. Back in Action, as flawed as it also is, is a much better movie because at least Brendan Fraser doesn't try to steal the spotlight.

>>153939593
This. Back in Action feels like the future of the Roger Rabbit setting. Brendan Fraser works better with his more cartoony companions in it as well, since he's never been opposed to being over the top and emotive. Michael Jordan is a goddamn plank of wood in Space Jam.

>Is basketball still as popular as it was in the 90s
No way, basketball sneakers are meaningless when they used to be cultural currency and there's exceedingly few personalities in the game much less superstars
>>
>>153939777
He's not wrong about characterization but the criticism towards the length is weird. Why would he complain that the movie lasts... what a movie is supposed to last? Was the man not fond of full features?
>>
>>153939871
I mean, weren't there a fair few big names back in the day?
Charles Barkley had some games, Michael Jordan was huge, Scottie Pippin was a big name, Larry Bird was/is a legend, Shaquile O'Neil had a horrible movie, Kobe Bryant, Dennis Rodman... probably others, but I wasn't big into Basketball and I'd heard of those people just like I knew about Gretsky or Tony Hawk.
>>
>>153940019
I don't think he's necessarily criticizing the length of the film as much as he's criticizing the aliens as antagonists. What he's saying is that the characterization shifts in Space Jam are pretty much the only reason the aliens survived past the length of an average short.
>>
>>153940055
But he's still looking at it from the perspective of a 7 minute short cartoon and not a full length movie.

I'd say "you had to be there," but that's not true. Space Jam is a fun peek at what '90s mainstream media was all about: Looney Tunes and basketball. Not perfect by any means, but the vibes are immaculate

It's not very good. Mostly boring setup with Jordon being a terrible actor for obvious reasons. The actual basketball game is only like 10 minutes at the end.
But it's fine for kids.

>>
>>153939178
If you have nostalgia for it sure, otherwise it's a pretty mediocre advertisement disguised as a movie. The only pros are, its animation is good, the musics a bop, it's dumb fun and Lola is hot. Otherwise, it's not that good.
>>
>>153939777
Nice trips.
>>
>>153939178
No, but it's pure 90's distilled into a movie with the Looney Tunes, who at the time were experiencing a major high with well viewed cartoons, the shorts that came before getting watched a bunch, and merchandising out the ass.
God, I wish they could be as big as they were back then now.
>>
>>153939178
What an odd concept for a movie this is. Looney Toon characters teaming up with Michael Jordan to beat aliens at a basket ball game.
The concept is something only executives from the 90s could come up with. It was truly a different time.

It's actually pretty understandable if you know the background.
First Michael Jordon did a crossover Nike commercial with Spike Lee to promote a movie he wrote.
The ad did well so then they did a Super Bowl ad with Michael Jordon and Bugs Bunny.
This did even better so they decided to make a whole movie out of it.
>>
>>153939178
It's a popcorn flick for you to turn your brain off and enjoy. I think back in action is superior (and that isn't saying much). The movie sort of lacks a middle act to me, like on moment they get Michael's Uniform and the next are playing the match. There should have been something in between.
But whatever, it doesn't overstay, it's relatively short. And it's easy to watch so go for it.
Even if it's not my favorite looney toons thing, i'll still sit down to watch it if its airing on TV.

that's just because ten million chinks view Yao Ming as their idol. in the US, the NBA has fallen to the bottom of the Big 4 sports in popularity. I think college basketball has overtaken it in popularity. whereas in the 90s, the NBA was in second place only behind the NFL.

and the NBA is already at rock bottom. precisely zero people want to watch some zoomer mulattoes make free throws all night after the opposing team drew a penalty for playing the post. Guys like Stockton would've been ejected in the first five minutes if they played today.
>>
>>153940019
I think what he was mainly criticizing was the movie’s premise. The idea that there was a threat so big that even Bugs Bunny couldn’t handle it without outside help. In the classic shorts, Bugs was always above whatever threat the villain of the week brought. The villains were really just there as vehicles for jokes, not to create some big epic drama. So regardless of the runtime, the movie didn’t really need to put the characters in a desperate situation or make them fear for their fate. That time could’ve been spent on a story that simply lets them be in their element and doing what they do best. That said, I still like Space Jam, even though I know a big part of that is nostalgia.
>>
>>153943509
90 minutes of Bugs clowning on the villains going from one gag to another wouldn't be very entertaining. The shorts work because they're short. You can't just have a sequence of jokes, you need an overarching plot to tie them together. think of it like a YTP; 2-5 minutes will put you on your arse laughing, but an hour or more of it will drive you to want to pull your hair out. there's a reason why Jones never directed a feature-length film. there's a reason why his literal job was to be the opening act for feature-length films; to warm audiences up for what they actually paid to come see.

I think the most important thing Jones was criticizing is the idea that a few little aliens that show up out of nowhere can put the entire Looney Tunes universe at risk. In that sense, the movie didn’t need stakes as big as the characters’ freedom. The basic premise of the basketball game would have worked if it had been a simpler bet, something that appeals to the characters’ ego or money, for example. That way they could have leaned more into the dynamic of them cheating (like bringing in Michael Jordan) and built jokes around that instead of turning it into a fight for their survival.

On the other hand, I get the point that “Bugs clowning on the villains” doesn’t hold up for 90 minutes. But they weren’t forced to stick to that format, they could have done other things like using a road trip structure, with the characters traveling through different places and interacting with different situations, even in the real world. Something like that is maybe what Looney Tunes: Back in Action is about, though I can’t say for sure since I haven’t seen it.

>>
Should use Penelope instead of making up a girlboss bunny.
>>
As other people have said, it's a mediocre episode of Looney Tunes with wrong-sounding voices, and MJ can't act. It's entertaining enough for kids, but when you watch it as an adult it's just sort of dull. It is a quaint little look into the 90s though, so there's that novelty if you weren't alive or were extremely young.
>>153941020
The joke that Fraser is playing Brendan Fraser's stunt double from The Mummy films always makes me laugh.

>so there's that novelty if you weren't alive or were extremely young.
I watched it for the first time this month (19yo) and I enjoyed it for what it was. I agree with criticisms given to the film but it still has its worth
though I gotta say, I think I prefer back in action more with how the characters act and interact with the humans

The script is well done. It still has some funny moments at any age. It works best if you actually know most of the basketball "characters" though and aren't too cynical about the Nike/Jordan stuff. I doubt the zoomer generation and below would get too much out of it.
