Why are people pretending the boys comic is good kek
>>
the crossed movie will be the garth ennis litmus test for the larpers
>>
>>153942978

Some people genuinely have very low standards. if a comic doesn't shoot acid into their eyes, it's "good".
>>
>>153942978
Tiktok users don’t have the attention span to rate stories within their full scope and contexts, instead judging them by all of the Standout Moments that have proven appeal. Ennis’ writing style of “SHOCK VALUE MOMENT, filler, SHOCK VALUE MOMENT, filler,” lends itself perfectly to them.

basedboy can't comprehend different opinions
>>
Mainly because people were talking about how bad the comic was for years so peoples expectations for it are way lower.
Also anything would be good compared to how badly the show dropped the ball from the first two seasons

The Boys is a pretty bad franchise overall. From the odd snippets of the comic I've read, they have a few chapters that are good mixed in with shock-value stuff. For the show, season 1 was good and season 3 was enjoyable enough at parts. And there's the one The Boys: Diabolical episode about the origin of homelander which I had fun with.
I haven't seen anything from Gen V but I'm in no rush to see it.
>>
>>153942978
It's really not good, but I've seen way worse.
>>
>>153942978
Its wannabe hipster larpers who want to seem enlightened, and trumpfags who got triggered by the finale even though the finale was dumb
>>
>>153942978
It had a better set up. Technicallyall the show had to do to out do the comic was have a bigger more destructive fight. Everything else could have remained the same and people would have been satisfied it atleast that's what the AI edits tell me.
>>
>>153942978
The show became so much worse that the book looks good in comparison.
>>
>>153942978
people like to compare the ending of The Boys with the ending of TADC for how awful they are
They ARE bad, however The Boys sucks more becuase it was never good in the first place
>>
>>153942978
excuse me sir!
>>
>>153943082
>if a comic doesn't shoot acid into their eyes
The Boys does that metaphorically.
>>
>>153942978
it had a funnier ending
>>
>>153942978
No one on /co/ has read the boys, so there really isn't an argument to be had with any of you.
The comic is good though.
>>
>>153942978
'cos it is good.
It has its issues, and probably could've stood to be shorter, but it's a good series overall
>>
>>153944421
>It has its issues
And all of them sucked.
>>
>>153942990
Larpers is a weird word for something like pretend. Where did that word even come from, anyway?
>>
>>153942978
The same reason people liked the Prequels after the Disney Sequels released.

Why are wannabe oldfags offended by people like shit that they hated?
>>
People just can't admit that both the comic and show are garbage in their own distinct and beautiful ways.
>>
>>153942990
>>153943241
>larpers
Fuck off and die
>>153943173
>Mainly because people were talking about how bad the comic was for years
Where? There was only talk about it being bad after the show. Before that the talk about it was "dude, this is good shit", then the show came along and changed everything and shills started on "um, actually the changes the show made are good because The Boys was always bad"
>>153944453
It isn't a word, its an acronym and it is sad it has been used as a word in the wrong context so much people don't even know that. Live Action RolePlay as opposed to sitting around a table roleplaying. Accusing someone of LARPing on the internet doesn't make sense, on the internet it is regular RP
And I know why LARP is used when RP would be proper, its natural to prefer acronyms that can be localized as words instead of letters but sheesh
>>
>>153942978
Contrarians.
>>
The show and the comic have opposite trajectories, the comic gets better by the end, the show only gets worse from season 2 onward.
>>
I thought the Boys comic was bad because /co/ and video essays told me so. Then I saw Just Stops video essays and now I think The Boys comic is good. Ive never read a single issue.
>>
>>153944453
it came from 4chan.org

I hate this art style.
It seems so dirty, and coloring makes it worse.

>>
>>153944453
Live Action Role Play (ers).
It's referring to nerds who would essentially play D&D, but in real life.
4chan started repurposing it into political contexts, using it to describe people who were so committed to an act they are literally living it and going to rallys and the like.
But like you said, people just ignore that context now and it essentially just means "pretending" today. It's lost any meaning that gave it distinction as time has passed.
>>
>>153946532
Nah, you weren't even born in 2021 when we made storytimes about this book.
>>
There's one thing that makes it hard for me to believe people would suddenly change their minds on the comics en masse.
It's so fucking bloated. It's such a slog I have a hard time imagining a bunch of zoomers read the whole thing between the end of the show and now.
>>
its better than the show which is saying something
>>
The show was bad so that must mean the comic was good, because sunk cost fallacy makes people not want to admit they were wasting their time from the start on a series that was always bad
>>
>>153942978
show's ending was so bad it makes the comic to look good

when did he go wrong?
>>
Because the comic was actually good. Granted, it isn’t exactly what one would good literature, but I personally enjoyed it for what it’s worth. My favorite arc is the G-Men, but maybe that’s because I was big X-men fan when I was a kid.
>>
>>153946965
>Because the comic was actually good
I beg to differ
>>
>>153942978
Excuse me sir...
>>
>>153942978
Zoomeroids can only think in black and white, "good" to them translates as "slightly better than this other thing that is total dogshit" in non-retard speech
>>
>>153945985
Sorry anon but this will always happen now, even more so with the algorithms and social media constantly censoring words and shadow banning any comment that has no-no word making so that zoomers and alpha gen to look for new words to replace the regular ones.
>>
>>153946158
Robertson is bad.
>>
>>153943177
>I've done comic equivalent of watching movie tiktoks and I have an opinion
no, fuck off
>>
>>153942978
Its flawed but people give it way too much shit. Ennis' umor is crass, there is a lot of trying to gross the reader out but the plot and the characters more than make up for it. I wouldn't even mind people disliking Boys if they held actual opinions on it, instead they point out to one or two gory scenes they were spoonfed and say "see? this makes it bad", funnily enough the tv series has more disgusting shit than the comic (and unlike comic it doesn't serve any purpose, they do it just because) and somehow it's perfectly fine
>>
>>153942978
I don't get the "excuse me sir" trend.
>>
>>153951133
It’s kino
>>
Because it is and you actually haven't read it
>>
>>153942978
The Boys show, and especially the wake up call from it's ending was so shit it permanently lowered the bar for all comics.
>>
>>153950207
This. It's not that bad. It's like a 5/10. It doesn't pass, but there are so many more worse comics that have fans or don't get as much shit.
>>

I'm genuinely just not bothered by shock value stuff. It has its moments, and I'll stand by that. I've always believed Ennis is a decent writer when he actually gives a shit about what he's writing about. Most professional writers can mask when they're disinterested or annoyed with a topic, Ennis is not one of them. The comic ending was better than the show because it was truly shameless in its approach and, for a rare moment, became introspective about its own nature. Billy's dying "men are boys" speech is more competent and self-critical than just about anything said in the last season of the show.
>>
>>153942978
Shock comedy has a powerful emotional effect, even if it doesn't drive you off it can leave you drained for a while afterword. For people who don't have a lot of experience with the feeling it can have a powerful effect on suggestibility, making very shallow arguments seem weightier and less unreasonable in context. It's not a long-lasting condition, but it'll be a year or so before they're willing to admit nothing involved is more than mediocre therapy for sellouts.

Post a /co/ character that would take John up on his offer?
>>
I liked The Boys, only watched the first 3 seasons of the show. Ennis is good at two things mainly, writing "broken" men (Hellblazer, Punisher) and writing good heterosexual relationships between men (Preacher). Butcher fills both of these, and his interactions with Hughie are the best part of the comic. That part, is missing from the show that I saw, and why I stopped.

He's also a massive WW1 and America/Western fan and shoehorns them into all of his comics at some point, but I don't know much about those topics so I don't know if fans of those would enjoy them.
>>
>>153955268
>>
>>153946158
I figured that was deliberate
>>
Garth hates superheroes so why I am supposed to like this series?
>>
>>153955575
and then the episode would be about him freaking out because all the other boys tell him that having another man suck your dick is gay

>>
>>153944404

>>
>>153942978
>"I hate superheroes except Superman for some reason. I know, I'll write a comic where every hero is actually a rapist, that'll show them!"
Amazing writing
>>
>>153942978
As a satire comic the boys is fine. As an actual story it's very weak.
>>
>>153957312
Why? And why would you only be able to enjoy something only as long as it's "only" a satire? It's not Paralympics
>>
>>153958291
Because it's a superhero story written by a man who has a pathological aversion to writing superheros and is physically incapable of writing anything other than dudes in leather jackets beating and/or shooting the shit out of people. So yeah, it's a touch uneven writing wise.
>>
>>153957203
ACKSHULLY, it's about the military industrial complex and the war on terror!
Which is why The Boys are contracted by the CIA to prevent Vaught American from getting army contracts because....uh.
>>
>>153958524
That's just defending the status quo of the military industrial complex. Maybe if they actually got those contracts and began engineering terrorism to support their financing but no. It ends with that becoming impossible. Who the fuck says this?
>>
Well, it has been many many years since I have read it. I also only watched clips from the show.

I think it was a novelty at the time, it was very crude, it obviously touched on awkward things and it was an obvious satire of some popular comic tropes and characters, but there was a lot of hit and misses, I always cringe at the dildo bomb. But it did have some interesting dilemmas and character conflicts, not always well executed mind you, but there are some good moments too, I do find the whole Homelander and Black Noir twist to be a good take on it because it showed that he was fighting back to be the monster he was pretty much raised from birth to be but the guilty of things he never did was too much for his human mind to handle, I do think that the fact Black Noir would literally pretend to be him on the other side of the mirror a funny joke. Would I call it a good comic? Probably not. But I don't think it's a bad one either. It's a work where you really have to get into the right mood and mindset and I am not sure you can do this in the 2020s anymore.

The TV shows from I what I heard it's just the same shit as always, last seasons shit the bed and writers and producers are only worried about being political, doing interviews and fighting on twitter so they can guarantee they will have a next job. Which is funny because I have seen Homelander pretty much everywhere, even on videogames, so it's another case of them trying to provoke one side of the political spectrum and not understanding why no matter how much they try to destroy the character he ends embraced by it instead.

Reading Garth Ennis has always been an exercise in how much beavis and butthead edgy bullshit you can stomach in order to get good character writing and the occasional great moment.

To me, he's just another decent comic book writer balancing dumb shit with good shit. They're all like that. Some lean more towards violence, some towards fantasy, some towards craziness, but it's all comic books to me. I don't really get why he's so singled out.
