Since "Rugrats" isn't a word in Spanish, this show got translated to the more literal title of "Rugrats Grown Up".
>>
>>153948878
>>153952079
How it's literally one of the most fucking crazy shows I've ever watched.
>Dil literally meets Aliens that help him time travel to win at laser tag
>Suzie gets scammed out of 1000 dollars for a fake music deal
>Chuckie creates a fake foreign exchange student persona to date a girl
>Angelica joins the Debate team to try and get a 20 year old substitute teacher to love her
>Dil becomes friends with a ghost at a campsite where the loch ness monster lives
>the group joins a dude ranch and stops emu rustlers
>Grandpa Lou and Boris help the kids film an alien autopsy
>Dil communicates with leeches and fish
>Phil sees Lil wearing underwear and gets awkward around her, they make up, then he sees his mom in her underwear
>Angelica literally threatens a laboring women to get her grade changed higher
>Aunt Charlotte takes advantage of Dil to sell a board game
>the kids abuse Dil and essentially make him develop accessories they can sell to go see a concert
>Phil becomes a pompous Chef and only stops when he learns that chefs need to wash their hands
>Dil gets upset with Tommy not paying attention to him so he goes on the Jerry Springer show
>Chuckie ends up streaking in school in an attempt to escape showering after gym
>Tommy pretends his dad is a Rabbi to try and date some Jewish girl
>Charlotte and Angelica get lost at sea and manage to get back home by mending their sail with dental floss
>>
>>153953269
>>Dil becomes friends with a ghost at a campsite where the loch ness monster lives
This episode was genuinely fucking kino, probably the best in the series.

>>Phil sees Lil wearing underwear and gets awkward around her, they make up, then he sees his mom in her underwear

Man I seriously misremembered this because I was sure the plot was Susie is promised a modeling gig but then finds out it's actually nude modeling and gets super uncomfortable. Like I thought it was one of those "very special episodes", you know?
>>
>>153948902
This gave me a stroke trying to read it

I wonder if them not focusing so much on the adults like the original did was the reason for that. I recall characters like Stu, Drew and Grandpa getting the most attention.

Nickelodeon's target audience is children. A Rugrats flashforward sequel still needed to attract that same viewerbase. If they wanted All Grown Up! to be for teens, they would've had it premiere on TeenNick.

They should've made them actual teens.
I know Nick's audience is kids, but teens are still young enough to be considered kids, while old enough to have more drama and conflict.
Also, it's not like many of Nick's teencoms weren't watched by kids anyway, there's an obvious appeal.
Kids like watching shows about teens, I would know, I was a kid once.

Yeah you have a point, that's why no Nickelodeon shows never featured adult or teen characters as the leads, so long as you ignore Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Spongebob, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Danny Phantom, Kablam, As Told by Ginger, CatDog, and Avatar the Last Airbender, some of which were the most successful series in the network's history.

Rugrats is such a strange franchise. At no other point in history could that series have been as successful and long lasting as it was. Frankly I have a love-hate relationship with the series at this point. Having said as much I still think that awful reboot should have followed the children of the original babies.

Phil, lil, and Dil were the only likable characters

ive been hyperfixating on angelica lately one of the greatest self insert fantasy characters of all time for those of us who hate the modern world who doesn't want to be the bossy queen of the 90s in idyllic syburbia, and watch my purple sky fly over me?
>>
>>153949024
Similar case as Amphibia. The writers were probably forced to keep the cast technically young enough to still be "relatable" to kids
>>
>>153968201
I remember getting this Nick Magazine years ago
>>
>>153974929
That should've been what the reboot was. Execs nowadays are scared of taking risks, that's why I think every "indie" show is getting blown out of proportion.
Anyways, what do you guys think the dynamics would have been?
>>
I only remember the Palcomix comics.
>>
>>153975934
Harold is a doormat.
Chuckie, when he stands up for himself, is a much better match.
Or Chuckie x Lil
>>
I kinda like to see Phil getting together with Angelica
>>
>>153981940
Why not Phil and Lil?
>>
>>153966677
With how often the drawthread churns out art of random /co/ boys crossdressing you'd think this scene would be more popular
>>
>>153951867
>>153966747
That's why I continue to insist we should have taken a Rugrats TNG approach instead of a total reboot. The modernized versions of Stu, DeeDee, and the rest of the parents and grandparents are so far removed from their original characterizations that they might aswell be distinct characters. The visuals and characterizations they went with would have suited the original babies as adults much better overall too. Millenial wetdream multiracial urban utopia + 90's Nick aesthetics. It writes itself frankly.
>>
>>153966939
Considering his dad was an inventor I still half expected him to follow in his footsteps and become another child/teen genius. One can only surmise they chose the director angle to differentiate teen Tommy from Jimmy. Either way he ended up in one of the Nicktoons games.
>>
>>153967673
>>153968791
What would 35 yo Angelica be like?
>>
>>153968201
Despite not being the biggest fan of this series I somehow retained immense nostalgia for all the illustrations that appeared on its tie in merchandise. Nick Magazine itself always leaves me a bit stunned over what a perfect time capsule of the era it was.
>>
>>153975934
>Chuckie/Susie
I have never understood the logic behind this pairing. If anything Chuckie should end up with Lil. Dil seems the better fit for Susie, but not by much.
>>
>>153979375
You have to ask yourself it they'ed focus on the original cast's offspring or not. Otherwise you'd just end up with an animated sitcom following the adult rugrats.
>>
>>153974929
>chuckie goes full chud
>>
>>153981989
Because incest has been done to death.
>>
>>153982251
idk I'd imagine she became an office worker like her mom, but I'd have to watch the show again to see.
if she did go through the office drone route I imagine she might've gone somewhere else so she doesn't get nepo'd in her mother's company, maybe she went to Japan since they started growing economically at that time, and maybe she ends up working at her mom's company anyway after they expand overseas by the time she reaches 35. which at that point she realizes she's become her mother, except she doesn't have a kid of her own because she spent most of her time on work without thinking about herself. and because of the culture it'd be hard for her to even find a guy that's interested, and she realizes that she wasted her time chasing a career when she should've been chasing a nice guy and becomes an alcoholic to cope with that fact.
fuck, that got too depressing...
I'd obviously fuck her brains out before that'd happen, though.
>>
>>153982844
>chasing a nice guy and becomes an alcoholic to cope with that fact.
This isn't Hey Arnold
>>
>>153982844
After the years worth of rotten output I've turned to imagining best case scenarios for what ifs like this. Having Angelica follow in Charlotte's footsteps seems like the path of least resistance. All that you've suggested would atleast play into that, offer the audience some relatable melodrama, and present a bounding board for her to get laid and have a kid of her own. I'm just unsure if we've seen enough of that in recent media. Having her actually pursue a relationship and parenthood might be the key to landing this plane.

Just going off my earlier suggestion, I can see Phil (stuck working dead end jobs in the battered not-california) shacking up with her once she flies back home for a family reunion or something. Maybe the other members of the cast had kids of their own by then? You could start setting up the next generation of Rugrats by then too.
>>
>>153982985
Yeah, I was just going off train of thought for suitable character drama based on what I remember. Personally, I'm not a fan of shipping main characters with one another, although I think Tommy had a crush on Kimi? Which I think is fine since it provides some tension between him and Chuckie.
idk maybe because I've seen it done so much that I'm sick of it, I was pleasantly surprised that American Dragon didn't have the two sidekicks end up with each other when I rewatched it.
>>
>>153982379
Yes, that makes the most sense.
Same formula as the OG show but with the kids of the old cast. Only tricky thing is do you have them end up with each other or not.
>>
>>153982379
I mean, at this point, why not? Almost every cartoon reboot seems to try to get the audience that grew up with the show rather than the new generation, why not just commit this time? It's not like kids wouldn't watch it, you'd just have to make it engaging which is especially hard to do nowadays.
>>
>>153981547
I like that the comic strip shipped Chuckie and Angelica even though I don't remember it happening in any other media.
>>
It wasn't an amazing show, but it did have some fun ideas and some genuine wtf moments.
>>
Tommy became a boring fag with a video camera, why did they make him a movie guy? Chuckie also became really annoying.
>>
>>153983263
For something like this you sort of have to go in that direction. The cast is already a little unwieldy, late run rugrats and all grown up were constantly locked up in juggling acts to make sure everyone had something to do. No need to add more characters to the story when you already have an abundance. Also, yes, Tommy shacked up with Kimi. Personally I still think a better fit for Chuckie would have been Lil. Susie is just such a bland character, and she lacks chemistry with the rest of the cast at the best of times. Phil and Angelica makes sense to me somehow because they're such stark contrasts to each other. Maybe I'm just biased.
>>153983356
>Only tricky thing is do you have them end up with each other or not
Why not? It's a direct sequel to the first two shows. You might aswell pair them off.
>>153983445
I guess you could juggle both plotlines. Hard to say if today's kids would sit through it though. There's enough of a glut in therapy speak cartoons as is. A nuanced sitcom approach almost seems impossible to realize now.
>>
>>153984043
This. Same goes for the original series too.
>>153984074
I remember more about Tommy being a wannabe movie director than I do Chuckie doing anything but having girl trouble. After revisiting the series with family I was compelled to imagine Chuckie as a mecha pilot because most episodes with him were so boring they led me to daydream of a better show . Chuckie peaked as a toddler in the Paris movie.
>>
>>153955780
There were a lot of "very special episodes" to this thing iirc.

I wanna say the real reason no one remembers it is because it tried really hard to be "hip y2k relatable" at times
>>153957990
If we're being entirely honest, TeenNick was for kids who wanted to feel like teenagers or rather, their own idea of teenagers
>>
>>153984130
>TeenNick was for kids who wanted to feel like teenagers or rather, their own idea of teenagers
Why they didnt just commit to programming blocks like CN did I'll never understand. Nicktoons and Teen Nick should never have become independent channels.

The whole franchise really. This was the original spongebob. The first rugrats movie grossed 140.9 million dollars on a budget of 28 million dollars. There's a reason they made it to three movies, ten seasons, and three spin offs.

The kids "growing out" of Reptar except for Tommy was just plain silly. At 12 you couldn't get me to shut up about how awesome Kaijus are. Tommy should have been making a Reptar fan film and writing letters to the Japanese director of the latest film.
>>
>>153984317
And almost all of that money was just marketing and distribution.
>>
>>153984083
Yeah relationship dynamics are all well and good, I just want it to be believable in-universe as well. You'd have to be a good writer to convince people that a certain relationship could be feasible for both involved, and that applies to writing a large cast as well. It could be done either way, it's just whether or not they do it well is the thing.

>>
>>153984349
See that would have been clever. All Grown Up unfortunately has a tendency of phoning things in. It's not the worst show, but it could be better. That said I still wish we'd gotten a Reptar spin off. I know all about the agreements with Toho, but I dont care. Reptar is cool and I wish we'd seen more of him. Over the years I've continued to mull over ideas for a Reptar solo film that essentially sees him become a cross between Godzilla and Hulk .
>>153984392
Insane isnt it? Picture perfect example of lightning in a bottle. The closest we'll see to it this decade might be the success of The Bluey Movie, and even it wont compare to the oddity of Rugrats the movie. At one point in time a theatrical, 2D animated, feature film that depicted everyone from Weird Al to Eminem as singing babies pissing in the air while singing was enough to launch and landmark franchise.
>>153984394
Trust me I get where you're coming from, hence my hesitance. Alot of ideas can sound great on paper but if the delivery doesnt line up you're boned.
>>
>>153984882
