I think the appeal is that it takes what made us so engrossed in the show back when it first aired, being the horrifying sci-fi monsters and locations, and essentially "leveled them up" in order to give the characters a challenge after they stopped freaking out over them and casually dealing with them with bored expressions on their faces. I think there's definitely this shift from Rick as a genius but bumbling scientist (see Rick Potion no 9 )to a god in a lab coat (see the heist episode where he destroyed multiple planets to bum morty out) and thankfully recent seasons have added a bit more bumbling with Rick where he just gets beat or beat up (love Zeus clowning on him)

Come the end of the episode I was almost certain that two things were true. One Evil Morty wanted the omega device removed and while he could destroy it having Rick want it destroyed worked better in his favor. The other thing I think he wanted? First to be removed from Rick's radar and two to get to the time cops.

These are the ultimate authorities beyond interdimensional travel these people control time and that is a new power Evil Morty could be after.

I did think however regular morty was pretty ineffective which felt out of character.

The season 3 premier was the shark jump moment. Rick went from his lowest point in prison to defeating all of his greatest enemies at once virtually single-handedly: the Federation, the Citadel, and of course Jerry. Also the Szechuan sauce meme. Even though they toned RickGod down a bit, he’s never been the same since.

I'd argue it was The Ricklantis Mixup that was the moment (in hindsight) when the show jumped the shark, because it's where the writers showed they were willing to throw a good idea under the bus in service of whatever bugbear they had with society or politics of the day. See also: President Keith David, or Evil Morty, or Rick's opinions on anything controversial.

I just want to warn everyone itt that I am not going to be gaslit into thinking this episode was bad.
First and foremost, the animation was incredible. That alone puts it above average.
Second? The plot was fun and having evil Morty be redeemed is a nice idea.

Evil Morty was too popular for them to have ever considered dropping him entirely, if they had any integrity he never would have appeared again after he blew the Citadel. Then again, these are also the people who came up with the giant incest space baby.

This makes sense, and he had to gain control of his Rick in the first place, so he probably had already downloaded his brain into himself or something. Something like 27 Ricks were killed in his intro episode, perhaps with him stealing their knowledge as well.

Morty has some level of technical ability just from osmosis over numerous adventures, seen when Morty Prime tweaks one of Rick Prime's robots to fire its weapon. Evil Morty taking control of Rick was as simple as getting him drunk and being underestimated. After that, the brain downloading gave him everything else.

You got it wrong bro. Evil Morty has depth now. He has flaws. He's now an actual character rather than a mouthpiece for exposition. He was always a little tryhard but him constantly winning made people identify too much and look the other way at how little depth there is. This episode was his first utter and complete loss since season 1 (if you even call it a serious loss since he still got most of rick's brain scan).This episode made it abundantly obvious that despite all he's achieved, he's still Morty (a 14 year old boy). He's a 10/10 jealous bitch. He saw that he got shafted with his Rick, and couldn't stand it that there was a Rick that was nice to his Morty. Saying it rustled his jimmies is the understatement of the century, because even after Rick took out the Omega Device, he could have not responded. He could have just acknowledged Rick got the better of him and stopped, but his ego was shattered. Rick said it directly by saying "He's lost the luxury of subtelty." And Morty calling his ass out saying "He leaned in hard because he thought it was real."

This episode was fucking gold and the fact it pissed off so many people is majestic. Evil Morty losing is them losing. And they can't take it.
