What do you think about Mission Hill?
>>
Fucking great show that didn't last as long as it should have because the Earth is gay as fuck. This isn't even a "show might have gone on too long and gone to shit" thing because we know about what some of the later episodes would have been like and they're great. I'm sad AS didn't have the money to fund more and got spooked after Big O's second season flopped in the money department.
>>
>>153949224
It was really good, I'm glad that people still talk about it. I'm also glad that it has stayed dead, I don't want to see a terrible revival.
>>
Both a really cool show and one of those time capsule pieces, watching it feels like getting transported straight back to that 1999 - 2001 cultural era.
>>
>>153949224
A peak at the world before 9/11.
>>

Genuinely feel like this could have had a Simpsons-level impact if it lasted longer and was allowed to find an audience.

I think it's just supposed to be really thin blonde hair, like how Charlie Brown isn't actually bald. The cartoon does take a ton of influence from 60s comics after all.

I feel like it could have stayed relevant into the mid-00s or so, wouldn't have minded it lasting 5-ish seasons.

The gimmick that the showrunner wanted was good, Animate sitcom is too linked to status quo compared to the LA sitcom which the character grown up. But I doubt they would have pulled well or they would let them do, South park tried twice and failed.
I think like the critic it started too soon, was released at the time of futurama and would had 2 more season.
>>
Absolutely fucked by the networks. Extremely charming show all around, Oakley and Weinstein really batted it oit of the park. Great writing, great animation, lovely color palette, some real heavy hitters in the voice acting

>>
>>153949224
It's a charming show, but it missed its window. It came out at a time when a lot of Gen X had stopped watching cartoons, and when Millennials were still a bit too young to appreciate it. I think if it'd come out five years earlier or five years later it would've been a hit.

It's always overlooked but Jim's "okay" is perfect there. Like yeah, he always says that, but this time it really did sound like he was basically saying "yeah, sure they did, Andy". He knows his friend is stupid, and I love that he expresses that here.

i'm so sick of that being the thing that killed shows..
sorry Dilbert, the only network that would pick you up is *reads notes* UPN? that can't be right. Wait okay, so this is.. it's a network with Star Trek, so that fits.. uh.. but it is the sexy, popcorn-y Star Trek.

It's more that WB didn't give a shitt about cartoons. I really wish CN had picked up a new season for AS but the time for any sort of revival is long passed unless you're explicitly making it a period piece. I can imagine a lot of Xers and older millennials getting something out of throwback to their glory days.

Finally a Family Guy show that doesn't look like Family Guy nor is it written like Family Guy.

I liked Mission Hill the most out of the 3 adult shows: the others being ... shit I forgot their names ... ok Downtown and the animated college show where 3/4 of the characters have an art style that makes them look like they came from different shows.

Mission Hill was interesting by separating the main character into two characters thus allowing the main one to be less of a loser than the first one. The first one being his little brother where I swear his episodes feel like South Park kiddie crap compared to his big brother episodes.
>>
>>153960242

There's a movie grift currently ongoing, but that was supposed to be out before the end of last year and all we know currently is
>He's working on tech to turn 2D frames into 3D models
>He's working on tech to turn 3D models into 2D frames

So yeah I'm sure progress is running smoothly when he's making 2 different movies in 2 different dimensions and using AI to justify the expenses.
>>
>>153960901
Why the fuck doesn't he just let it go? The people who watched this show are probably in their mid 40s at this point. Zoomers can't relate to it neither so what's the appeal?
>>
It's a good show.
>>
It's fun but it's also pretty weird to see a show that takes place in such a specific time and place: 1999 New York or Chicago, complete with semi-employed losers like Andy still living in massive apartments or guys getting insanely rich because they "know computers"
>>
>>153960678
I unironically feel like this was the start of a new era of animation that never took off because of networks being retarded. There seemed to be a real movement to create highly visually distinct adult animation around then that just got assfucked by retarded management.
>>
>>153961642
It is a wild time capsule of pre 9/11 America, imagine how idyllic shows about the present are going to look in 25 years
>>
>>153962036
I like to think that we're living in a rerun of the 1970s with worse music and that just like how 1999 looked way better than 1974, 2051 is going to look way better than 2026.

>>153960678
it's funny, when Simpsons was hitting it big, there were a ton of failed attempts at simpsons clones.. high budget, offbeat shows like Family Dog that failed to actually connect with anyone.. not to mention things like Home Movies that got greenlit 'just in case it becomes a simpsons' then canceled when it 'didn't become a simpsons'

but by this point, the turn of the century.. things were already waning, and they were trying one last slightly-risky move to try to get a hit. But once 9/11 happened, suddenly only GIGANTIC hits counted as successes, so everything got swiftly canceled.
>>
>>153960901
dude that's how this works. you keep your fingers in every pot. and training the AI on -yourself- is logical. Now he can draw just the keyframes, and the AI can do the inbetweening. The only alternative is huge roomfuls of korean slaves. AI doesn't justify expense, it eliminates it.

it's only recently it's gone to pot. Nothing has changed re: outsourced inbetweening. in fact, if anything, we do it LESS now. Due to more shitty flash doll shows and tiny artisanal shit that gives you like 8 episodes every 2 years.

I haven't watched it since I was a kid, but I didn't really like it back then, it was just something to pass the time til what I liked came on. I get the feeling I'd probably like it if I watched it now though. It seems like the kind of show you can appreciate and enjoy more as an adult than as a kid who just wanted to watch Family Guy.
>>
>>153974437
Definitely. This is the ACTUAL kind of 'not a kids' show' not the mom-kind

actually they touch on that IN the show. Kevin wants to sneak into an X-rated movie, but then he realizes it's just super deep and doesn't have any nudity, and the old guy is like 'back then X meant films for mature palates.. art films, etc.' like something a kid would have no interest in.

It wouldn't work, the last holdouts of this kind of world were basically dead by 2005 and as a broader cultural element were dead by 2003. Even if they brought back all of the original writers they've been removed from that world for over 20 years. Bryke and Aaron Ehasz all worked on Mission Hill (Koinetzko was a storyboarder, DiMartino was a director, Ehasz was a writer).
>>
>>153978269
most of those shows are products of their time made by people with that time's mindset.

Look at the new regular show episodes. They are mostly made of ideas they couldn't adapt at the time which is why the episodes are on par with the old ones but some of the dialog and character designs are clearly made by zoomers and don't find the show.
>>
>>153976096
isnt that a reason to like, not stick it in there?
or I dunno, keep yourself clean
>>
>>153982420
Baby Blues is fucking amazing. It's another shame it never went any further. it's not like it reinvented anything, but it did sitcoms better than basically any sitcom. It was Drew Carey Show tier.
And it had a fun dynamic where the main nuclear family tropes were all the wacky neighbor family, so the primary couple is really just young parents with a baby.. it's different for them. Oh and their pediatrician was a HOOT.
>>
