What do you think about Mission Hill?
Fucking great show that didn't last as long as it should have because the Earth is gay as fuck. This isn't even a "show might have gone on too long and gone to shit" thing because we know about what some of the later episodes would have been like and they're great. I'm sad AS didn't have the money to fund more and got spooked after Big O's second season flopped in the money department.
>>153949224It was really good, I'm glad that people still talk about it. I'm also glad that it has stayed dead, I don't want to see a terrible revival.
Both a really cool show and one of those time capsule pieces, watching it feels like getting transported straight back to that 1999 - 2001 cultural era.
>>153949224A peak at the world before 9/11.
>>153949224>Fucking mediocre show that is overrated for its unique visuals and the fact that it didn't go on long enough to become objectively horrid like most adult animationftfy
>>153949388Expansion Pack? What the hell is an expansion pack?
>>153949224Kafkaesque

>Literally only has 13 episodes>Tons of moments from the show are memes or quotes that people still useGenuinely feel like this could have had a Simpsons-level impact if it lasted longer and was allowed to find an audience.
>>153949455I always thought her hairline looked weird, like she's balding on the front.

>>153949478there's a lot of girls with that hairline.
>>153949478I think it's just supposed to be really thin blonde hair, like how Charlie Brown isn't actually bald. The cartoon does take a ton of influence from 60s comics after all.
>>153949521>>153949515Still would.
One of the best shows of its era
>>153949224Genuinely my favorite cartoon of all time, period.Where de beans at, where de beans at, where de beans at
>>153949473It’s a show that very should have had the chance to live in the 2000’s and then die in the mid 2010’s
>>153949224Andy was supposed to change his job each season until eventually getting into animation like Matt Groening. Where would he go after unavoidably leaving (or getting kicked out of) Jim's office?
>>153949224It was good
Penis penis penis penis penis penis.
>>153950133I feel like it could have stayed relevant into the mid-00s or so, wouldn't have minded it lasting 5-ish seasons.
Never skip intro
The gimmick that the showrunner wanted was good, Animate sitcom is too linked to status quo compared to the LA sitcom which the character grown up. But I doubt they would have pulled well or they would let them do, South park tried twice and failed.I think like the critic it started too soon, was released at the time of futurama and would had 2 more season.
Absolutely fucked by the networks. Extremely charming show all around, Oakley and Weinstein really batted it oit of the park. Great writing, great animation, lovely color palette, some real heavy hitters in the voice acting>what was wrong wit our regular condoms?>nothings wrong with them, these were on special, thats all>you cheap, gay bastard, these things are gonna FLY RIGHT OFF
Didn't a bunch of the lead people for AtLA work on Mission Hill before?
>>153949224I found the color palette nauseating
>>153949224Wish they made Peter Bagge's Hate comic into a tv show instead
>>153949224It was great. Glad we at least got that acted out storyboard that might as well be considered the finale at least.

>>153952550That is so kafkaesque
>>153949224It's a charming show, but it missed its window. It came out at a time when a lot of Gen X had stopped watching cartoons, and when Millennials were still a bit too young to appreciate it. I think if it'd come out five years earlier or five years later it would've been a hit.
I liked it as a kid for some reason and I like it a lot more now.

>>153952837you cant just squirt some lube in there?also how is that not kind of a hint the penis doesn't GO in there
>>153949224Great show. Biggest mistake was airing on WB instead of on Adult Swim.
>>153952852It's always overlooked but Jim's "okay" is perfect there. Like yeah, he always says that, but this time it really did sound like he was basically saying "yeah, sure they did, Andy". He knows his friend is stupid, and I love that he expresses that here.
>>153954792i'm so sick of that being the thing that killed shows..sorry Dilbert, the only network that would pick you up is *reads notes* UPN? that can't be right. Wait okay, so this is.. it's a network with Star Trek, so that fits.. uh.. but it is the sexy, popcorn-y Star Trek.Let's see what your lead-in show is. Uhh it says here.. "Homeboys in Outer Space."... look, it was this or a web cartoon.
>>153954862Both terrible.
nice butt
>>153954997both?
>>153952600It's more that WB didn't give a shitt about cartoons. I really wish CN had picked up a new season for AS but the time for any sort of revival is long passed unless you're explicitly making it a period piece. I can imagine a lot of Xers and older millennials getting something out of throwback to their glory days.
>>153957826you know what my glory days were?when nobody said 'millennial'hell I'd even take the early days of when they started saying it, when it meant gen Z.
the episode about tom kenny's character movie is unironically one of the most beautiful, heartfelt pieces of art i have seen and espouses a life philosophy beyond anything i could ever fathom any prime time cartoon exhibiting
It's just... Beardly.
>>153949224>What do you think about Mission Hill?s'okay
>>153953057But then why is there a fun button inside?
>>153957917>We're as close as an elderly gay man and a straight teenage boy can be, Kevin.>>153958823I have my doubts about that. If nothing else, there has to be an easier way to get there.
>>153949224Finally a Family Guy show that doesn't look like Family Guy nor is it written like Family Guy.I liked Mission Hill the most out of the 3 adult shows: the others being ... shit I forgot their names ... ok Downtown and the animated college show where 3/4 of the characters have an art style that makes them look like they came from different shows. Mission Hill was interesting by separating the main character into two characters thus allowing the main one to be less of a loser than the first one. The first one being his little brother where I swear his episodes feel like South Park kiddie crap compared to his big brother episodes.
>>153960242>and the animated college show where 3/4 of the characters have an art style that makes them look like they came from different shows.Oh you're talking about Undergrads right? Gimpy especially looks uncanny.
>>153949224I feel like if Family Guy didn’t exist, Adult Swim would’ve revived this show.
>>153949289That era was quite something for adult animation: lots of visual variety, unlike all the Family Guy/Rick and Morty clones we have now.
>>153960337Yep Undergrads. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-aGZh8Nd38
>>153960744All 4 MC's were voiced by the same guy. There's a movie grift currently ongoing, but that was supposed to be out before the end of last year and all we know currently is>He's working on tech to turn 2D frames into 3D models>He's working on tech to turn 3D models into 2D framesSo yeah I'm sure progress is running smoothly when he's making 2 different movies in 2 different dimensions and using AI to justify the expenses.
>>153960901Why the fuck doesn't he just let it go? The people who watched this show are probably in their mid 40s at this point. Zoomers can't relate to it neither so what's the appeal?
It's a good show.
It's fun but it's also pretty weird to see a show that takes place in such a specific time and place: 1999 New York or Chicago, complete with semi-employed losers like Andy still living in massive apartments or guys getting insanely rich because they "know computers"
>>153960678I unironically feel like this was the start of a new era of animation that never took off because of networks being retarded. There seemed to be a real movement to create highly visually distinct adult animation around then that just got assfucked by retarded management.
>>153961642It is a wild time capsule of pre 9/11 America, imagine how idyllic shows about the present are going to look in 25 years
>>153962036I like to think that we're living in a rerun of the 1970s with worse music and that just like how 1999 looked way better than 1974, 2051 is going to look way better than 2026.
>>153949375What’s wrong with her hairline?
>>153960678Newspaper with a buncha different art styles running side by side in the strips was still a ubiquitous household item at the time, now channels are brands
>>153949405You used to have to buy a physical disk that cost as much as the game itself to get DLC. A good example of this is: World of Warcraft: the Burning Crusade

>>153952489You can get AIDS from avail sex it's caused by micro tears in your anus absorbing fecal particles
>>153958823It's vastly exaggerated and doesn't really work unless you stop penis stimulation for an extended period of time, and even then doesn't feel very good
>>153952600Didn't Adult Swim rerun it once like five years later? I remember hoping it was going to get a revival
>>153961642it wasnt ny, it was literally a mix of san francisco and seattle, mostly the later.
>>153960678it's funny, when Simpsons was hitting it big, there were a ton of failed attempts at simpsons clones.. high budget, offbeat shows like Family Dog that failed to actually connect with anyone.. not to mention things like Home Movies that got greenlit 'just in case it becomes a simpsons' then canceled when it 'didn't become a simpsons'but by this point, the turn of the century.. things were already waning, and they were trying one last slightly-risky move to try to get a hit. But once 9/11 happened, suddenly only GIGANTIC hits counted as successes, so everything got swiftly canceled.
>>153960901dude that's how this works. you keep your fingers in every pot. and training the AI on -yourself- is logical. Now he can draw just the keyframes, and the AI can do the inbetweening. The only alternative is huge roomfuls of korean slaves. AI doesn't justify expense, it eliminates it.

>>153969614>IIII VANT MY HAIRCUT BECK!>>153969645er, none? But they were for the next 40 years, very successfully, through the use of outsourced inbetweening. Well, it was pretty fucking rough for a while there, in the cheapo kiddo era, but it got better again. renaissance and all that.it's only recently it's gone to pot. Nothing has changed re: outsourced inbetweening. in fact, if anything, we do it LESS now. Due to more shitty flash doll shows and tiny artisanal shit that gives you like 8 episodes every 2 years.
>>153969890you didnt laugh at Tom Kenny playing an Ewok actor who was actually exactly like a human Ewok, and then tried to break up a fight with a rousing round of "Yub Nub" ?
The world wasn't ready for it
>>153951954I know for a fact Eshaz or whatever wrote on the show
>>153949224Making my way through it. It's pretty fun, if a little generic a times. The art style is fun and the voice actors do a really good job giving their characters...well...character.
>>153951081indeed
>>153949224I haven't watched it since I was a kid, but I didn't really like it back then, it was just something to pass the time til what I liked came on. I get the feeling I'd probably like it if I watched it now though. It seems like the kind of show you can appreciate and enjoy more as an adult than as a kid who just wanted to watch Family Guy.
>>153974437Definitely. This is the ACTUAL kind of 'not a kids' show' not the mom-kindactually they touch on that IN the show. Kevin wants to sneak into an X-rated movie, but then he realizes it's just super deep and doesn't have any nudity, and the old guy is like 'back then X meant films for mature palates.. art films, etc.' like something a kid would have no interest in.
>>153952489>but why the fuck would monogamous gays need condoms?to avoid poopdick, you dumbass

>>153949224>Mission Hill comes on adult swim>Andy and co are "adults" from my perspective>25 years go by>watch Mission Hill >Andy and co are barely old enough to drinkI don't enjoy aging
>>153978269it would be modern seattle, ny and sf culture, but even shittier.
>>153978269It wouldn't work, the last holdouts of this kind of world were basically dead by 2005 and as a broader cultural element were dead by 2003. Even if they brought back all of the original writers they've been removed from that world for over 20 years. Also the animation would look like fucking ass, Mission Hill was genuinely well-animated and people can't animate for dick these days.
>>153950652SILENCE!HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU TO DO SOMETHING USEFUL WITH YOUR SPARE TIME
>>153974906I'll try to give it a rewatch then. I've got a long backlist of stuff I want to watch and rewatch first, but Mission Hill definitely seems like it deserves a revisit. Maybe Baby Blues too, you remember that show? I kinda liked that one even when I was a kid. Oblongs too.
>>153952943Bryke and Aaron Ehasz all worked on Mission Hill (Koinetzko was a storyboarder, DiMartino was a director, Ehasz was a writer).
>>153978269most of those shows are products of their time made by people with that time's mindset.Look at the new regular show episodes. They are mostly made of ideas they couldn't adapt at the time which is why the episodes are on par with the old ones but some of the dialog and character designs are clearly made by zoomers and don't find the show.
>>153976096isnt that a reason to like, not stick it in there?or I dunno, keep yourself clean
>>153982420Baby Blues is fucking amazing. It's another shame it never went any further. it's not like it reinvented anything, but it did sitcoms better than basically any sitcom. It was Drew Carey Show tier. And it had a fun dynamic where the main nuclear family tropes were all the wacky neighbor family, so the primary couple is really just young parents with a baby.. it's different for them. Oh and their pediatrician was a HOOT.
>>153969890Its a show you don't like with a cult following that makes you feel insecure so you have to pretend you're being forced to like it.
>>153985469man that has become so widely true now.. people martyring themselves when they already won

>>153986224nope he was basically just the same work-friend from The Mask. it was the style at the time. Family man (lonely single or successfully married) has a man-slut friend because haha it's the 90s! promiscuity, right? He still behaved himself with his friend, he just perved at every other woman.
>>153949224I miss the early 2000's

>>153986682he's pretending to be being forced when he is not
>>153986350Huh. Just goes to show the damage Family Guy did to that archetype, considering how Quagmire's character devolved.
>>153988039Family Guy was parodying it, pretty sure. Quagmire was a deliberate exaggerated joke right from the start.
>>153952550
>>153988780
>>153949224I only remember the episode where his little brother gets caught masturbating. I should try to rewatching it since I only saw a couple of episodes when I was like 12.
In 2018 there was going to be a Gus & Wally (the gay guys) spinoff but it got cancelled. Its cancellation was probably for the better considering our current political/cultural climate.
>>153978956Yeah the Y2K era was gone after the 2004 shift
>>153992288yeah though the creators did kinda say that paradigm was just to draw in the network, that they wouldn't REALLY focus on Gus and Wally, rather, they would include them as main characters alongside the other core four, making a total of six.
>>153992395>final episodeskek, it's like seeing a list of people who died in cape comics.

>>153994761I honestly don't know if we could, kids these days are so inundated with the internet and gooner content that Kevin's freakout and shame about porn wouldn't be understandable - it'd just make him look weird, and not in the way the show intended.
