A new bad guy turns up who hates emotions (cause feelings are gay). Destroys all the lanterns before being defeated. Not just the Green Lanterns but all the other groups. 99% of ring users dead and their rings smashed. The few Green Lanterns left now wander space as solo heroes rather than being space cops that are part of a larger organisation.

I would make the emotional spectrum more abstract than being just one english word and they'd have good or bad versions. Like green could either be about order or control, yellow could either be about terror or dominance, red righteous fury or mindless violence. If I was doing a full reboot I'd throw out any notion of the Guardians not being immortal, powerful, or morally good. They're just at a stage where they want the universe to be able to fend for itself and there only real blunders being Krona and the manhunters. The ring energy would be chi and they basically give the lesser races the abilities that come easily to the multibillion year old Guardians. Alan's ring and lantern are bootlegs made by a feng shui master who had a dream about it.

If you want alien Lanterns, make WCSRs very rare but not unique; every now and then one falls on a planet and is found by an inhabitant who forges it into a magical power ring.Give them more realistic weaknesses would help; "wood" or "the color yellow" are kind of lame. Maybe something more direct like living tissue or a common material like iron.
