HOWWWW did this fucking clown with NO TALENT become the most beloved writer in comics? WHAT the FUCK
>>
It's a pretty low bar
>>
>>153958865
>I-I-If I pretend the best writer in the history of the industry is bad they will give me attention!

Here you go kid. Don't spend it all in one place.
>>
>>153958865
Just because you say he has no talent doesn't mean it's true. Proof's in the pudding
>>
>>153958882
This.

And I think Alan Moore can actually write.
It's just, compared to actual authors, dude is hit and miss as fuck. He wins out because everyone else can't keep to a coherent fucking story, and even he fucks up there more often than not.
>>
>>153958979
>Whuh?…Don’t bend it all in some space!
>>
>>153958865
Lol the only clown here is the one seething
>>
>>153958865
it's comics the bar was just that low
>>

the trick is writing stupid shit that makes stupid people feel smart
>>
>>153958865
it sounds conspiratorial but I really think british writers were being pushed precisely because they are all cynical and pushing a similar worldview. And that world view began around the same time to be propped up in america as a literary ideal to strive toward. I really just cant stand most british writers.
>>
>>153959772
They were just cheap, anon. They were basically scabs. Same with how they started getting artists from the Philippines and South America in the 70s.
>>
>>153959802
ah I see. the same issue still plagues us then, only people working as writers are the ones ok with mcdonalds wages.
>>
>>153959802
So these cheap hires just blew the fuck out of the American industry for pennies. Crazy.
>>

heh, nothin' personnel, kid
>>
>>153959829
Yes, truth is conspiracy is mostly just cutting corners or incompetence in most cases. Naturally poor British writers are more cynical than m American fanboys who were into sci-fi and fantasy that were the usual stable of American writers at the time. The 70s/80s gen of American cape writers were largely fans who had grown up with these characters and comics.
>>
>>153958865
Serious answer: He wrote very detailed scripts and his stories often had interesting twists like D.R. & Quinch or his future shocks. Then he started writing for Warrior which is where Miracleman was first published and his popularity exploded because of how he brought back an old character in an unexpected way. I also believe he wrote a Green Lantern story with Kevin Oneil because Kevin's art style was too edgy and that also helped get him into the news. He's not no talent, he's amazing at writing good prose and dialogue. If you didn't like his more popular stories there's probably something by him you will enjoy.
>>
Newfag to /co/, can someone explain why you guys don't like Moore? Is it just contrarianism? Like yeah I get he has some kooky beliefs but he's easily one of the best writers of the modern era.
>>
>>153960518
Half the people here don't read comics they just follow twitter drama around current Spider-Man or cherry-picked Alan Moore quotes from interviews and use those as a way to excuse themselves from ever reading anything good. Not saying Moore is perfect but that's what 90% of the hate for him is.
>>
>>153960590
>Half the people here don't read comics
Woah, it's just like /v/
>>
>>153958865
Lack of competition and lack of public awareness of Kabbalistic beliefs giving him an edge on novelty + he came it at just the right time when western society was living it up with sex, drugs and rock 'n roll instead of the strange mix of actual degeneracy and performative puritanism we currently have.
>>
>>153960518
I don't like it when Moore comes up with a cool story concept and then uses it to soapbox his personal beliefs at the cost of the story. If he does it WITHOUT compromising the story hey, it's fine. But I will never forgive him for turning League of Extraordinary Gentlemen into an excuse for this old man to yell at Harry Potter and James Bond, or Promethea letting me down bigly by just being a very well illustrated intro to the Kabbalah for most of it's run. It's a damn shame because the singing, dancing Goetia was genuinely fun, but a lot of shit that was set up felt rushed to the end when he just had Promethea magic a good ending into existence.

On the other hand, I loved the Nemo spinoff from LXG because it was exactly what it was supposed to be: The adventures of Captain Nemo('s estranged daughter)
>>
>>153961285
Just know that you are contributing to an ongoing aggression against Moore by contrarians, non-readers, zealots, and genuine schizophrenics. I'm not saying you shouldn't voice your criticisms, but keep that in mind around here.
>>
>>153958865
I legitimately think anyone who says Alan Moore is a bad writer is just a bit too stupid to discuss media with. I don’t even like him particularly, but it’s just so prima facie wrong.
>>
The problem with Moore is that he was so influential a lot of zoomzooms read his stuff and it seems basic because they already saw/read/played/watched an eceleb talk about similar themes multiple times.

I would wager half of the modern hate Moore gets is because of this picture of him wearing a Soviet Russia/Communist tanktop.
The other comes from clickbait articles that frame it like he said Rorschach is the villain of Watchmen(he has never said this)
>>
>>153958865
Accident, mostly. His Commie brain-rot makes him capable of some intelligent writing, but wholly out of touch with fully functioning humans. His heroes and monsters are largely swapped, until you get into instances where there is no nuance whatsoever, and it's practically evil for evil's sake.
Of the "British Invasion" of comics, Moore is the most intelligent, but he's still an overgrown teenage retard, albeit one who got his hands on a copy of Das Kapital.
>>
>>153963866
It is astounding how an anarcho-communist (politically retarded), feminist, drug-addled slob who believes in gay shit like magic is better than anyone else in the history of the medium.
>>
>>153958865
>doesn't pollute action scenes with thought bubbles
that is a massive win right out of the gate, especially with his reputation for being too deep 4 you pretentious.
>>
>>153958865
He's beloved because the majority of comic artists and readers are either commies or commie sympathizers

>>
>>153965115
this is bait
>>
>>153962683
I think those are just envious and edgy.
>>
you see comics used to be for children, but moore elevated comics into being for man children.

having a background in actual literature, the occult, mythology, gave comic books some depth
>>
>>153960518
Just about everyone here (ane everywhere else) loves Moore's work and rightly recognizes it as the highest peak of Anglo capeshit. Homosexuals like OP just desperately crave attention.

It might also be a ploy to lower the level of discourse here. It's a known fact that there are politically motivated operators whose specific goal is to make anti-authoritatrian sites like 4chan so shitty that intelligent people leave them cause they can't handle them anymore.
>>
>>153959772

You have the cause/effect mixed up. Those writers have the same worldview because they're all Brits. They were born cynical. And it was treated as the ideal because they sold well and everyone began copying what sold.
>>
>>153965265
No
>>
just because he's an ass doesn't mean he's not a good writer.
He's literally too miserable these days to do what he's good at, which is writing super hero comics.
>>
>>153959772
Moore's Swamp Thing literally reinvents the Swamp Thing as a more inspiring and less cynical character.
>>
>>153958865
That's not Will Eisner.
>>
>>153958979
jerusalem is a mess. really destroys the idea he's a great writer.
>>
>>153963866
>His heroes and monsters are largely swapped
So basically all you "read" of his work is online whining about Rorschach and Ozzy from people who don't understand the comic.
>>
>>153965265
>but moore elevated comics into being for man children.

That was Frank Miller with Dark Knight Returns. Moore just opened the door wider for artfags, litfags, and the normalfags who latched onto Watchmen but then never picked up a real capeshit floppy in their lives. Then Gayman carried that torch with Sandman.

capeshit has a format problem. No one wants to read an indeterminate amount of slop just to follow the general gist of a storyline.
The best thing about Watchmen is it's a book you can buy, it has 12 chapters, and then it ends.

>>
>>153961285
This is basically my thoughts on him too. He tends to let his beliefs seep way too much into his stories, and his last acts tend to feel rushed, but he does genuinely write some cool stuff.
I still prefer Frank Miller out of the "dark age" writers just because he was more consistently good (at least until whatever the fuck ASB&R was supposed to be came out.)
>>
>>153966424
She's a derivative of a character Angela Gaiman created, he would later sue McFarlane over it and win

>>
>>153966227
>The best thing about Watchmen is it's a book you can buy, it has 12 chapters, and then it ends.
people over estimate the breadth of comics, outside of the absolute flagship spiderman and batman's. you only got 12 issues a year. there are threads that remain open but most major episodes in the comic get concluded pretty quickly.
>>
>>153966902
yeah, but even then, they will suddenly drop references to some event that happened decades ago. They also tend to want you to follow other heroes. Ones you maybe aren't so interested in. It all just feels like too great of a treadmill.
Plus, about half of the writers suck, and if I get attached to a character, and then someone else shows up and starts writing them poorly, I'll be pissed off.
>>
>>153966637
OK this is very complex as it made it to all the way to the 7th circuit of appeals and also involves the Miracleman/Marvelman publishing rights.
Todd McFarlane creates Spawn as a lone soldier from hell, Todd hires Neil to write issue #9
Neil created Angela an angelic Spawn Hunter, and essentially Spawn's version of heaven along with Medieval Spawn creating the concept of multiple Spawns throughout history a staple of Spawn books and the toyline up to today.
Todd goes buck wild and puts these characters Neil created in every thing including toys.
Neil gets pissed and sues over he owns the characters because Image is independent. Todd counter argues it was work for hire, a system Marvel and DC uses when creating new characters and the reason Image comics was created in the first place over losing out on ownership over Venom, Deadpool and other 90's characters.
While this court case is going on Todd is creating and profiting over other Spawn off shoots and blatant Angela rip offs.
Eventually like 10 years later Neil Eventually wins Angela, the other Spawns were ruled derivatives of the original and the IP of Todd, Neil winning his original creation Angela, and as one last fuck you to Todd sold her to Marvel where she's Thor's sister and being used to this day.
This is gross oversimplification as Miracleman is also involved and it's own bag of worms.

Moore's not one of them, he drew, he just had enough mind to work with artists who could consistently and efficiently illustrate in the style he wanted, as well as getting their input in the planning phase in the case of Watchmen.

This, and don't forget the times something DOES have a set format issue #1 went out of print years ago and is hundreds/thousands of dollars. Invincible is popular not just because of the show, but also it's easy as fuck to buy. You can get compendium #1 for $55.

Rorschach might have been the first in this new wave of radical Leftists making strawman characters who end up being more agreeable/sympathetic despite the author wanting you to disagree with them. Same as John Walker from the MCU, Amelia from Pathways, and the dad from Mixtape to name a recent one.
Whatever this phenomenon is needs to have some sort of name attached to it at this point.

That's not true at all. The "trend" you're referring to is the British new wave of science fiction and it started in the 60s with Michael Moorcock and Frank Herbert's Dune. Norman spinrad's the Iron Dream is another notable example. Even in comics you had Judge Dredd and other stories in 2000ad with anti heroes. Please read a comic or book published before 1980 before posting again.

You're missing the part where Alan hates himself for his instrumental role in destroying something he loved as a child, which was super hero comics as they existed before the 80's.
I don't entirely agree with him, but I get it. Super hero comics are no longer things to stimulate the imaginations of little kids. Super hero comic culture is now this incestuous little clique of rapidly aging men, who will passionately argue about what colour Batman's briefs should be.

To understand Alan Moore, you must realise he fucking hates himself. This is probably why he hates the movies, and the mythologising of his 80's period so much as well. It brings him a level of attention he doesn't want. Or at least it draws attention to a younger him, who he feels he has outgrown.
