You know, I just realized that the show could've started whenever. Since Caine made avatars from a folder of brainscans, this doesn't have a specific time this happened. From the brainscan's perspective (since I assume they're inactive when they're saved as files in a folder) they put on the headset and suddenly they're in a circus. But the scans could've happened way before Caine even built the Circus, so no wonder the original staff were so confused.
