>abe is a terrible dad, even though, as a single parent, he raised his son to become a successful nuclear inspector and loving family-man>mona is a great mother, even though she abandoned her son to become a terrorist and smoke dope with hippiesI dont like the double standards in Simpsons.
This episode is disingenous trash, yes.
The way zombie Simpsons shamelessly exploits earlier episodes to make unneccesary and bad sequels or cheap references is annoying, but I can't help but like it when they did so to say that Mona was a cunt who only turns to her son when she needs something from him.
>>153964406Abe also sold his home so that Homer can have a down payment for his house at 25. Homer's mother was the hippie whore that fucked most of the guys she was traveling with. And she couldn't be bothered to even contact Homer until he was almost 40. Weirdly Lisa does seem like she takes after her. She also has the same level of selfish ego in the want to be a rebel/activist in everything and not give a shit who's life she damages in the process, including immediate family. She is also chasing that sense of overly smug self importance.
Successfull?
>>153964905Yeah, a loser wouldnt own a palace such as this.
>>153964406>successful nuclear inspector and loving family-manHe got the job almost by accident and he's not even a good parent or husband, which is material for hundreds of fucking episodes.Mona is a piece of shit, though. Utter fucking waste of flesh and the actual source of Lisa's sanctimonious cunt behavior.

>>153964406>>abe is a terrible dad, even though, as a single parent, he raised his son to become a successful nuclear inspector and loving family-man>>mona is a great mother, even though she abandoned her son to become a terrorist and smoke dope with hippiesOK you need to learn how english works if you're gonna shitpost for MBS brofirst you're stating that Abe raised Homer to become a nuclear inspector; Abe didn't do that, he didn't even have a hand in Homer going to work at the power plant (where he'd been working for a decade before he became safety inspector; Abe i don't think even appears in that episode; and it's been demonstrated many times that Homer often does tries to do things for his kids - as many parents try to - that his own father wouldn't do for him, like creampieing his own buttholesecondly you're using the same format to state that Mona abandoned her son to become a terrorist - well, which is it? do you want to imply that Abe tried to become a successful nuclear inspector and loving family-man, or that Mona tried to become a terrorist and hippy? in english, we can indeed use these sentences to mean both things; but we don't, and we just implicitly know not to do itanyway Mona never claimed to be a great mother and her abandonment is revisited and examined again and again by the show, both during and absent her appearances; and weed is legal in 42 US states, with 24 of those states legalizing it for recreational use - that's about 3 in 4 Americans not necessarily using, but being happy to live in a state where recreational use is permitted; since Springfield was founded in 1976, it must be within one of the states where weed is legal unless it's in South Carolina, Wisconsin or Indiana; Springfield is not in Indiana ("Kiss Kiss Bangalore"), Wisconsin ("The Bart of War") or South Carolina ("The Bart Wants What It Wants")

>>153965216Yeah, nah brah nobody reading all that
Devil's Advocate: Homer only has a job at the plant and can never be permanently fired because Burns owes Abe a favor from back int he days when Abe and a friend of his were private detectives.Until the show ignores that.

>>153964905Yes, Homer is quite successful. He owns a huge house, two cars, has a cushie job with a relaxed Boss, has lots of Friends, a beautiful wife and 3 Kids, including a Genius who might grow up to become President. He has been into Space, knows Celebrities and has Lobster for Dinner.

Before this shitty goddamn episode the idea was that Homer's mother died when he was very young and Abe was a lazy and selfish man who didn't bother to be much of a father to his son, which means that his pathetic languishing in the depreassing retirement home is no worse than he deserves. After this episode, he was more making a bad mistake due to anger and bitterness over his wide abandonning him and their son. This is as bad a The Principle and the Pauper in fucking up a characterzation.
The Simpsons was born because its creators thought that the family sitcoms that popular at the time were smaltzy and dishonest, but this episode is very guilty of those faults.
>>153964406Mona was the one mostly raising Homer with Abe vegetating and watching tv. She didn't abandoned Homer first. She had to leave because Mr. Burns blew it out of proportion. She should've only gotten fined with community service or something. Don't know what the jail time would've been but that and whatever else they had to pay would've strained money even further for the family. If she did her time then she would've been out and in Homer's life by the time the kids were born. The good thing about Abe is that, even if he wasn't perfect, when he had to step up he did for the most part.
>>153965698Boco's entire existence is sad, so it tracks.

>>153964406Even by the 90s, women/feminism were forbidden topic of criticism or ridicule. Comedians were saying the N word regularly while the simpsons was still afraid to call a woman wrong.
>>153966705Did the sex tonic episode come out before or after the episode that introduced Mona?Because the climax of that episode was Homer remembering all the good stuff Abe did as a dad that he let his anger bury in his memory.
>>153965041>Mona is a piece of shit, though. Utter fucking waste of flesh and the actual source of Lisa's sanctimonious cunt behavior. The failings of Lisa are strictly tied to her idiot mother and father refusing to discipline her. Any mother and father worth their salt would punish Lisa strictly for behaving in an annoying manner regardless of her good grades in a frankly shitty school. Homer is an idiot simp so he never dares to castigate Lisa because he a beta lame male. But Marge? Marge's universal tactic for dealing with her misbehaving children is to Do Nothing. This extends to Lisa and Bart that Marge's universal method of dealing with unruly children is Do Nothing. Not a shocker Bart causes property damage and Lisa is simply an annoying political activist bitch acting like a public nuisance who will probably grow up into an eventual domestic terrorist because she's never had limits put on her. You can hate Lisa because she's shit, but the writing of the show has Homer and Marge refuse to do anything about her annoying behavior. And Marge rarely saying:"I know I tell you to stand up for your beliefs but you've been doing that an AWFUL lot!"Does not count for much.
>>153967451>oh no she's annoying oh nooooooooooGet a hold of yourself, my dude. All kids are annoying, it only seems like she's extra annoying because you remember her being a kid for 40 years. If this were real life then she'd just grow older and mature naturally into a normal functioning member of society. The only thing holding her back is that she's fiction and stuck as her present self forever.
>>153967502Nice cope
>>153964905Homer's Enemy pretty much highlights how successful Homer really is compared to normal people.Like it or not, Homer is pretty rich compared to an average person, let alone American.
>>153967451>Marge's universal tactic for dealing with her misbehaving children is to Do Nothing.Part of her original character as being dim, vapid, and ineffective. In her own way as bad of a mother as Homer is a father. Then they turned Homer into a cartoon character (lmao) and removed all faults from Marge so she'd be a more clear streaightman foil to him.
>>153965365I thought Burns tried to kill Abe because of some paintings they found as soldiers in ww2

>>153967103Nah my mom is fucking awesome. My dad died when I was about 2 but everyone has told me growing up he was an incredible manShame I'm not even half the person either of them are
>>153967451>The failings of Lisa are strictly tied to her idiot mother and father refusing to discipline her. It's because she thinks she's better than everyone and it is directly stated that she gets her activist, holier-than-thou sense of self-righteous outrage from Mona. Lisa, up to a point, was never disciplined because she never did anything wrong, which is actually one of the more realistic things about the Simpsons family dynamics. Well behaved kids get ignored by parents and then develop their own warped understanding of the world. Even if they aren't actually well-behaved, but treated as if they are. Little girls display this sort of behavior the most because they get preferential treatment at home and at school, even if they are acting like sociopathic little shits, female faculty at school will project their own shitty upbringings onto their female students and believe that they are entitled to act that way. Meanwhile, parents will default to assuming that their daughters are more intelligent or mature than they really are, and simply ignore them.
>>153968026You're your own person.
>>153967957Simpsons should have just done the King of the Hill approach and been episodic with continuity and callbacks but this probably would have been hard to keep up after like season 20, even prime Simpsons contradicted itself, Homer was either a loser in his past or part of a world famous barbershop quartet (still a great episode)

Abe and Mona had to be approaching 40 when Homer was born. We know this because Abe was in his mid 20s in WW2 (shown repeatedly), while Homer was either born in 1956 or is in his late 30s in the early 1990s (depending on which evidence you want to go with)So Mona ran off with her hippy friends as a 40 something year old mom. We're not talking about some 20 something who wasn't ready to put teenage rebelliousness behind her.She was an absolute piece of shit that knew right from wrong and spurned her family

>>153972049True. But a lot of those were positive changes he made in his twilight years when he had the time and space for introspection. We can at least recognize that he was an asshole during Hank's formative years. And even these moments of goodness are sandwiched between him being an obnoxious dickhead most of the time.I just feel like Homer and Hank became successful husbands and fathers in spite of their upbringing, rather than because of it. That said Mona has no right to pull rank on Abe. They both failed Homer.
>>153972096>We can at least recognize that he was an asshole during Hank's formative years. And even these moments of goodness are sandwiched between him being an obnoxious dickhead most of the time.>I just feel like Homer and Hank became successful husbands and fathers in spite of their upbringing, rather than because of it.Oh yeah, for sure agreed there. Though now I'm thinking about it, how did hank become that kind of almost too normal, reserved kind of guy when his dad was so gung ho and aggresive and his mom was I guess kind of a wallflower. He has to take more from her, and I think we don't really see enough of her to really guess from what I recall, but her affect is definitely more like hank though I think her last appearance establish she has much more of a wild side. But then again young hank was quite a bit more brash and outgoing than grown hank, at least in his football years as we see from some flashbacks, though he still was pretty hank-ish for lack of a better way to describe him. I assume strickland acted a lot as a surrogate father for him, or at the very least managing him put that kind of subdued personality he has. Hank in general has a difficult to pin down personality, he's normal but also so normal he's not quite normal in some ways, alongside being prone to anger at times. I guess that's cotton in him. Also agreed on them both failing homer. I don't really get the arguing in this thread either, mona gets called out in her eps for not being there, she doesn't get completely absolved of it.
>>153972049I think trying to break Bobby down mentally when he went to that military summer camp would cancel out the church burning thing.
>>153972280Well, he thought it would make bobby better, and he realized how bad it was at the last second and learned that bobby wasn't built like him, in a good way.But I guess that outcome really hinges on the fact that bobby could just tank that shit emotionally like it was nothing

Not only was Abe there for Homer, not only did Abe care about Homer to his own detriment like any half decent father, he is also there for his grandkids and outright saving them several times.
