What is /co/'s reception on this so far? I just realized this show came back but I am too lazy to watch it since I got other shows to catch up on.
>>153981248So far the Pops arc is the only worthwhile thing but only the premiere has used it so far. The "lost episodes" feel pretty bad. The animation downgrade is one thing, but the writing feels a lot more juvenile this time around, and the characters say shit like "lock in" multiple times and "don't have the bandwidth for this today. Benson says the second one. The lost tapes part just isn't there. I'm hoping the Pops arc stays good through the end, it was the only one where the writing felt normal.
>>153981947That right there is the ultimate flaw of modern revivals. All these entertainment entities want to bring back these recognizable series and films because of their name recognition, but then they also want to update these concepts to appeal to a wider audience in the hopes of making more money than they would have by just attending the built in audience. How many times has this tactic even succeeded? It appeases no one and everybody just writes off the project in the end.
>>153981947Yeah Eileen telling Margaret to lock in really stunned me when I first heard it. Like aren't they in the 90s?
>>153982112A couple episodes later a sports guy Muscle Man is teamed with says "you gotta lock in!" and he says "how am i supposed to lock in?!" while crying and then sinks into the abyss of quicksand in the fetal position to represent artsy millenial depression.
>>153981248It's not good BECAUSE most of the same people are in charge of it. It's the Hulurama problem where instead of a show sucking because it has new people on it who don't understand/like the IP, it retains the same creatives who ran out of steam ages ago, struggle to come up with anything new that fits the formula, and are hesitant to bite the bullet and do what the Simpsons did (which is to go back and forth between escalation or looking inwards).I blame the juvenile aspects on how censorship from S&P has gotten WAY worse, as well as due to the increase in female staff who don't really get Regular Show's appeal or the source of its comedy (two GUYS getting up to mischief out of boredom/laziness) is and mistake it for something else.
>>153981248it's mediocre. Ignore the people saying it's any better or worse than that. It's merely passable.
>>153982236>Would you like to meet our fantastic new storyboarders, Quirk Chungus and They/Them?
>>153982112>Like aren't they in the 90s?Regular Show is more like an 80s coded show set in the 2000s than anything
>>153982634>Hulk on the shirt carries nothing
>>153982236There are late millenials and early zoombers making 3 minute regular show parodies that run circles around lost tapes. It's pretty fucking sad honestly.
>>153982634gulag fodder
>>153982634I refuse to believe that Quintel allowed this to happen willingly
>>153982880He's one with California now. That's what happens when you live around and work with them for so long. Look at Close Enough, they infiltrated that shit for sure with the sexist men episode.
>>153982880Quintel had to let it happen because he would have been canceled and blacklisted by the animation industry if he didn't willingly accept the increase of female staff in regular show
>>153981248From what I seen, I think the general consensus is that is so-so.The stories are okay in some episodes, but in other the characters feel pretty childish (Mordecai and Rigby in Blade Games) or slightly weird / out of character (Muscle Man in Nap Spot telling Mordecai and Rigby he considers them his best friends, even through the episode implies it takes place not too long after Mordo and Riggs got hired). The animation is also pretty inconsistent. Sometimes there's scenes which look no different than the animation from later seasons. Other times, they use puppet rigs that use Season 1 designs as a base, in which the characters also move in a really weird way (like that scene in Blade Games where Benson's car is getting ripped apart).Despite this, I've seen people say that this is better than other revivals out there.Also... does anyone know when are new episodes coming out? We recently got two new ones (Artist Block & All You Can Fit) by accident thanks to someone from Disney+ making them available before their actual release date.
>>153982008The only revival that's worked is KotH even if "works" means it's mostly on the quality of the later seasons which means weaker but still watchable.
>>153984020If we're talking FOX/Disney then maybe, although I still hated that too. If we're discussing matters on a larger scale then my vote goes to Beavis and Butthead. Genuinely astonishing how perfect that revival turned out.
>>153983894I think the guess going around is that episodes at least up to 22 (all you can fit) will be part of the Season 1A drop on Max June 8th, because that would explain why Disney+ accidentally had up to that far while setting things up. If so I think we might be done with TV premieres and it was just for initial marketing. If so that'd be pretty sad since it's the last linear viewing experience I'd enjoy.
>>153981248a little clunky in some areas, but it's still serviceable as "More Regular Show." I really liked those two latest episodes that dropped on Disney+ by accident
>Bensen gets cucked in 1 episode>Benson has to cry to get the slackers to do their job in 1 episode>Benson got on his knees and beg for his drummer spot back in 1 episode Is the writing off or was Benson always this much of a bitch?
>>153990744>Is the writing off or was Benson always this much of a bitch?blame the writers
>>153981248LUAUUUUU
>>153982112it's set in the 2010s, they have smartphones
>>153982112>Like aren't they in the 90s?The shows setting is kept intentionally vague and anachronistic
>>153982634I don't fucking care about whoever the fuck makes the show anon, I could care fucking less about if they're the big scary "WOKE!!!!!" or not
>>153981248I'm enjoying it so far.
>>153991360I think it's pretty obviously set in the early 2010s, the time when the original show came out, but with the park just using old tech, and with a retro 80s theme throughout. Whenever they use 80s tech like the cellphones in season 1 they're described as old and retro. Some characters use smartphones while others still use flip phones (which was the case irl during the early 2010s). Pops uses a rotary phone because he's just old-timey. The park probably just has old computers because they won't bother updating them (part of its character), and Mordecai and Rigby have an old game console that looks like a Sega Master System because that's all they can afford.>>153991365a show is good or bad because of the people who make it
>>153990744Eh, it came and went. There was a lot of humor at his expense but the writing of the new episodes is also awkward. The ending of Blade Games was fucking weird with everyone standing around him. I think it was Real Thomas where they randomly revealed he broke up with Audrey and how everyone had helped him emotionally recover while the guys say they don't remember any of that and it pissing him off, but that can also double as a meta joke about how it happened off-screen so the audience wouldn't remember either.
bump
>>153982112>Like aren't they in the 90s?There was a character in the original show named "Tracy Hashtag" from around 2013. That was one of the first times I felt something was off and made me question when the show was really set.
>>153991519In the case of video games, I think being 8 bit is as modern as it can get in their world. Games like Strong Johns are still being advertised on TV so it can be assumed that Strong Johns was recently made.
rigby get boba tea
I really enjoy it. One anon had a great point this feels like this is more of unused plots from Close Enough, but I loved that show. Is this what nostalgia feels like? It feels like some old childhood friends coming back into my life.
>>153981947What I don't get is Close Enough writing style was basically the same as Regular Show and that was not even 5 years ago. What changed so much in Quintel?
>>153994732Which is weird considering that HD DVD and Streaming appears in Format Wars II which would set the show in around 2006-2007.
>>153981248Animation looks terribleLike CN used AI for tweaningA bunch of fags got mad when i pointed out how awful it looks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPDueGbDg7M
>>153999619I will never stop hating all of you for hyping up an unnecessary Regular Show midquel when we could've gotten more Close Enough instead
>>153981248Don't trust anyone who think its flaws goes past the inconsistent animation quality. The complaints about the writing, that's usually just here, is always baked in culture war shit.
>>154000121More close enough would've been just as bad due to this >>153982934Also Quintel is also helping is that dyke highschool furry show, cannot wait up until it inevitably fails just to see animation twitter crying once again about people not supporting original IPs instead of having a look inwards and realize the new millennial cartoons are just fucking shit regardless wether it's a new IP or not.
>>154000213The writing feels wrong for this specific show most of the time, and saying that has nothing to do with culture war. You can point to some new female writers but even some old time crew have lost their original mindset after 10 years. It's just not the same, and at times there's a very clear lack of regard for even trying to have consistency by having shit like Benson casually saying "I don't have the bandwidth for this today."Handwaving the disappointing quality of the writing is just as bad as people with no understanding of animation saying everything about the revival looks great or exactly like the old show.
>>153981248Don't give a shit about animation, i care about how funny or good are the episodes. And so far they are mediocre at best or painful to watch at worst. They are recycled versions of older episodes but made by people who watched regular show shorts in tiktok
Mordecai getting sacked in the duggy while Margaret watches felt like a vindicitive writer was involved. Like what happened with Clone High S2 and Abe. I don't think Margaret would laugh at that.
>>153981248I like it so far it feels like the first few seasons again in terms of writing. overall it's a fun watch
>>153981248It's Regular Show like your 50 year old brain will remember it.Yes, this is real.
>>153981248So far I have only enjoyed one episode, "Boba or Bo-Bust". It's the only episode that feels like one of the old episodes. I like the first episode, too, but that one is not one of the lost tapes.
>>154001213this is the face of a man who's been waitin to go fishin but a plonker wont let him into the jacks. he's just a little snip
>>153981248s'okay
>>153981248I was really disappointed with the toilet humor in one episode>>154002019This oneThey were usually above that but this was like Sanjay and Craig, just the most awkward fart and shit humor they could've done.
Haven't watched it yet, someone said that it was written like Adventure Time, is this true?
>>154003185The tone is wrong in half the episodes so far. They forgot how to make the show and the characters feel off/childish. I guess sometimes it might feel Adventure Time-ish.
>>154002019>>154002682Which ep was this again? God I hate binge-culture, half of what I see I end up forgetting within a week
>>153982658He’s struggling because it’s the MCU Hulk.
>>153982008does it count if the show was cancelled originally instead of just ending naturally? I'm not particularly a fan of family guy but it seems like its still pretty consistently watched.
>>153982880do the showrunners even get to decide who gets hired? i'd figure the network would be the ones doing that.
>>153991365
>>153990744Benson deserves to be tortured eternally for eating their burgers
Why did they downgrade the animation so hard, isn't Regular Show one of their biggest shows?
>>154005479No clue. I remember Close Enough looking totally fine. At least Phineas and Ferb's animation downgrade was preceded by Hamster & Gretel looking the way it did. I expected THAT revival to look "off," but not Regular Show's.
Are zoomers even talking about it?
>>154006144nahhh, not really
Any funny jokes from the new season?
>>154005479Because it's cheap and the only reason the reboot was even approved was because it's a reboot. The bad writing is just shameful and unnecessary though.
>>153981947>pops arcSuch garbage
>>153981947What arc?
>>153994732Oh yeah, I guess there are anachronisms like that.
>>154003861Not really. Family Guy is more of a case like Futurama where the show pretty much ran its course and got kneecapped just as it hit it's stride. The direct consequence of which saw some of the greatest writing each of these respective shows saw since the writers were convinced they werent going to get another shot. Once they get revived everything becomes noticeably different. The moment they realize they're permanently bankrolled they stop giving a shit about quality altogether. Modern Family Guy has long since jumped the shark, and like all these other mcfarlane sitcoms, it's firmly in great gazoo/zombie simpsons wheel spinning territory. At this point it's only really kept relevant through memes, which also applies to both Regular Show and even Phineas and Ferb these days. These's shows being "back" doesnt mean anything ultimately because most people will just reminisce over the good old days anyways. Simpsons best exemplifies that too.
>>154000213Stfu, did you even watch it? You're the one bringing up culture war when 99% of the complaints have nothing to do with it. Sometimes the writing feels right but a lot of the time it has serious issues. I think it's still worth watching if you liked the original show, especially later seasons, I don't think it will ruin it for you or anything, but you'll have to lower the quality bar in every aspect.>>153981947>>154000474Why do you keep mentioning the "I don't have the bandwidth" line? Haven't people said that for a while? Other lines do feel off like the multiple "lock in"s or the one about "workplace harassment." I don't see what's wrong with that particular one though.>>154001213>>154002019Oh god the backgrounds look so much lower res than the characters, wtf happened there
>>154006646>WHY ARE THERE BALLS IN MY MOUTHProbably the best of the 1000 cock and balls jokes. The quantity of them actually kind of dampers the humor of the good ones.
>>154007163Wait, it's filled with dick jokes now? I known they said they wanted to do more adult jokes
>>153991365GET FUCKED YOU FAGGOT FREAK
>>154007199Yes, they're plentiful. Most of them don't really land and feel forced imo. Like others have said it's like Adventure Time/Steven Universe writers were tasked with writing RS, and they're just cargo culting the handful of balls jokes the original series had without actually having that sense of humor themselves. Yeah I know most of the writers were on the original show but this is what it evokes. If they were serious about it they would have allowed mild language like pissed and crap again like in Season 1. You definitely won't see gif related in new episodes.
I can't let this thread die
>>153990744They’re trying to make Benson like Jerry from Rick and Morty.
