I like how he’s both pretty ungraceful and gets beat up a lot, but is clearly super overpowered like Spider-Man is so he just tanks getting beat the fuck up like it’s nothing and walks it off.

I also like how he’s willing to kill people wlthough I found it weird he was fine killing like 5 of Silvermanes men just to he could “intimidate” Silvermane and threaten him. Why not just kill the guy there? Don’t tell me it’s morales, you just killed a bunch of other guys who were much less evil

I get not wanting to blow you're load with Electro and using Megawatt instead but in what world do they need to saving Charlie Wielderman for later. I watched it in black and white and it was the best Marvel live action content imo

I just gave a quick glance at the color hue version and it looks shit because the effects don't look as good as they do in black & white. Black & White just gives that vintage Hollywood vibe which really sells it when the show goes full noir

This

The Spider & his faithful sidekick the Monkey.
>>
IIRC the show mentions Ben Reilly is new name taken up by him, does this allude to him originally being named Peter Parker.

Also did they not actually name him Peter Parker because of the weird terms Sony & Marvel have for live action Spider-Man shows
>>
>>153988371
It was ok. Good script, great cinematography, great acting... except for the lead. Cage dies on his feet as Reilly, coming off as incredibly silly and uninvested when he should be stern and haunted. He brings down every scene he's in which sucks because that's a lot of them.
>>
>>153997873
Yeah, Ben Reilly is an alias.
>>
>>153997921
They set him up as basically Old Man Spider, which I was fine with considering it suited well with the Noir vibe

A younger Spider Noir protag would have been nice but that ship sailed the moment Nic Cage was cast in the Spiderverse movies
>>
>>153997977
That isn't really the issue
The script screams for a serious and inscrutable leading man, someone brooding and put-upon dryly using jokes to deflect, but Cage plays him as an aloof and manic and downright goofy madman. Any random schmuck doing a generic noir pastiche could have done better
>>
>>153998032
I mean the whole show comes off as a subtle parody of Noir movies and shows
>>
>>153997873
I think the unspoken implication wass he changed his civilian alias to Ben Reilly after Ruby died and he stopped being the Spider which kind of makes sense in a mirror way of petter abandoning his life after he left being Spider-Man to the “clone”

I doubt they’ll mention his actual name is Peter due to copyright issues or something where it’s worked out with disneycurrently
>>
>>153998032
I think he did pretty well especially since it’s hardly a realistic world anyway. That episode where he lashes out while drunk at a bar was kino

People don't like Cage. Can hamper the show.

I said this before and I'll say it again. When Cage is on screen (which is a lot) you never know what you're going to get and sometimes that can be fun. Characters like Salvermane definitely feel like they're in another show when next to cage.

I like the reporter character doing a ben (Nic Cage) impression

See there’s a lot of stuff I think is cool about the show like the suit (except for that stupid fucking hat I hate it so much) and the fact they actually filmed it in black and white not just a filter. Same for the true hue stuff. And that’s it’s going in its own, weird, direction

But I just LOVE that original comic so much that I’d watch it going “This isn’t the comics I wish this was a straight adaptation” so I wouldn’t be able to really enjoy it. Cause I’m weird

>>154005309
I actually wrote out an entire treatment for a comic accurate movie. I’m an actor so I cast some friends as actors, director, editor, and myself pulling double duty as writer and star

Even used comic panels to explain the look of the movie, examples of scenes and dialogue, and costumes. I made sure to explain that the suit would not explain the hat due to my hatred of it. I just think it looks stupid and doesn’t make sense

I don’t want to share it because my account name is my actual name and every time I’ve tried to use the spoiler thing it just doesn’t work. So better safe than sorry

Everyone wants to put their own spin on how they remember the comics(or corporate just telling you to do stuff). Even Raimi did this. Also I guess some comic book stories either rely on the reader knowing years on context or feel like a part a more overarching saga.

He should be in his mid to late 40s at the oldest.
He was in WW1 which put him likely in his 20s if not his teens
The show happens 15 years after the war in 1933
He was The Spider for an unspecified amount of time up till 5 years before the series starts.
So that up to 10 years of experience and his look and be explained by the fact that everyone back then smoked and drunk so heavily that ti aged them really hard.

I'll recycle my post on /tv/.

+Cage carries hard, certified cagekino
+Gleeson carries too
+decent cast in general, (almost) no character is annoying
+occasionally interesting cinematography, especially in the second half, where the story and visuals really ramp up
+in terms of body horror and violence it goes a bit harder than I expected
+spider vs sandman vs not-electro was pretty decent
+the did a pretty good job at deaging cage for the flashbacks

-BARELY ANY SPIDER IN IT. He doesn't even put the mask on until the end of episode 2 or 3. this is my biggest gripe because for three quarters of the series this wouldn't even need to be about a spiderman
-some of the actions scene feel very anemic in terms of choreography and rhythm, and spider vs electrofatso absolutely sucks
-sandman looks quite cheap (and overall I don't get what his deal was, pretty schizophrenic character)
-the child was the only annoying character (of course), but luckily he doesn't show up too often. not-electro borders on annoyance too. that's the whole joke, but he still objectively talks way too much
-I wish there was more spunk in the first half of the series
-cage is too old for the role, although this is admittedly partially addressed in the series

I watched it in color, frankly it doesn't look that great in black and white and the coloring is pretty nice.
overall better than I expected, let's say 7/10?

>-BARELY ANY SPIDER IN IT. He doesn't even put the mask on until the end of episode 2 or 3. this is my biggest gripe because for three quarters of the series this wouldn't even need to be about a spiderman
This is actually the one comic book adaptation where I'm fine with it. I'm watching it for Cage and noir-style drama, Spider-Man is more like a cool bonus.
>>
Cage is definitely not too old. If the role demanded him to act big and loud, he could've done it. He voiced Noir in the cartoon, and sounded a lot more energetic there. But this version is supposed to be weary and slow. Every time he gets in a fight, he gets smacked around, and his acrobatics often end with him landing on his ass with zero grace. This is obviously on purpose, they didn't want this Spider-Man to be nimble or fast. He's supposed to be a brute who tanks everything until he can hit back, kinda like Matt Reeves' Batman.
>>
>>154008987
What the fuck are you smoking? Slow? Lacking energy?
Cage has WAY TOO MUCH energy in this show. His coworkers are playing things smooth and down like a proper noir pastiche while Cage is going "WOOHOO WOOHOO" and bouncing around like Daffy Duck with his mouth full to bursting with the scenery he's chewing.

It's absurd and ruins a good chunk of his scenes because it's at odds with the basic through-lines of the script.
>>
Pretty boring.
>>
>>154009308
Are you sure you're watching the right show?
>>
>>154009328
Anon you might have autism if you think anything about Cage's performance is slow or lacking energy or understated. He isn't taking these shoots seriously at all and his acting clashes so hard with everyone else's that sometimes it feels like he's been edited into a different show.
>>
>>154009365
>>154009328
To put it another way:
The script and the cast are going for pastiche
Cage is going for farcical parody
>>
Cage is playing spiderman and he's playing the part fucking perfectly you retard. That is Peter Parker using the name Ben Reilly, he's going to be like that. Just because its the depression doesn't mean Peter is going to stop making shitty jokes for himself

Might have to do with the fact that their laughable dogshit Spider-Man output don't even have Spider-Man in it to begin with.

What the fuck was this retarded jumble of words supposed to convey?
Peter Parker is going to act like a wacky cartoon character in contrast to every other actor in the piece because his name is Ben? The fuck?
Please be ESL.

Sony owns Aniplex, Crunchyroll etc. they're very present in the anime sphere yet they've done no attempt to make a Spider-Man anime. This always seemed weird to me. I know they're legally not allowed to make cartoons but they can still make anime movies. That one Demon Slayer movie made like... 30 times its budget. A Peni Parker anime movie by Trigger/Khara/Sunrise should've been a slam dunk
>>
>>154009798
Holy shit you're retarded. It's a response to the faggot saying Cage was edited into a different show. No that's not what the point was you fucking dumbass. Peter is acting like a wacky cartoon character because he fucking is one, even in live action.

>Peter is a wacky cartoon character in all iterations!
>Cage acting like a wacky scene-chomping maniac when the script clearly calls for a reserved noir detective is good!
You're an idiot.
You can like the show all you want
You can like the performance all you want

Thats because nic cage can only play one character. It was bound to be a borderline parody from the moment they casted him.

You think the guy who bit Reilly might actually be Peter Parker, I know Reilly is a changed name but still
>>
>>153988371
Isn't noir supposed to be in his early 20s like peter? I feel that one spiderverse movie has affected the spider canon for years to come.
>>
>>154013029
It's explained in the show.
>>
>>154012872
The guy who bit Reilly was Flash Thompson, you could see his name on the bed
>>
>>154006513
>Spidervrse Comic Noir

The cinematography, particularly aping the old black-and-white film look, was top-tier.
The story itself was hammy. Which is also in line with the old b&w thing, sure. Made it feel authentic. But at the end of the day, hammy is still hammy, and after eight episodes, it doesn't matter how authentic the ham is, it's still just ham.

I can tell I'm watching a good noir piece if, at a certain point, I get this feeling. Almost like chills. Suddenly something becomes "hard boiled" in a way that's easy to spot but hard to recreate. It usually takes a few seasons for cop procedural to have good hard-boiled moments. Sadly, Spider-Noir didn't really have any. Not a one.

comics Noir, yes (his Uncle Ben was the one who fought in WW1)
Spider-Verse film version of Noir, probably (we see he's bitten by a spider)
Show version of Noir, he was a soldier during WW1 and it's implied he was fighting crime as The Spider during the 1920s, so he's way older than the other versions
>>
>>154015040
She never let's him leave
>>
>>154012872
Ben Reilly is either Peter Parker or Ben Parker and changed his name
>>
>>154015463
he's peter. 7th episode he says ben is a name he decided to go by after the war. Reilly is Aunt May's maiden name, Ben is his Uncle.
>>
>>154007202
I mean think about everything he does/went through
>WW1, gets bit
>drinks a lot
>loses his fiance
>Great Depression
>drinks some more
>smokes cigarettes from time to time
>eats hot dogs regularly
>drinks a lot

I hope season 2 has a scene of Nic Cage escaping Area 51(which wasn't built until 1955) or the Ravencroft Institute(comic book asylum).

/co/ would throw a conniption because "heccin problematic"
>>
>>154009798

I think the point ESL anon >>154009455 was trying to make was that (operating under the assumption that Cage is actually just playing another Peter Parker variant) a Depression-era Spider-Man would still be a wisecracking, self-deprecating Spider-Man, regardless of what name he calls himself. Then again, "manic sperg" isn't exactly the same as "nervous wisecracker."

This makes a lot more sends when you get his backstory about having to learn to be a human being again after being bitten and getting infected. He learned how to act like a person by watching movies lol
>>
>>154007018
He’s meant to be middle aged and over the hill but closer to 50 than 60. Like 48 I’d guess

But he got his powers like 15-20 years ago in WW1. WW1 ended in 1918. Show takes place at some point in the 1930’s before WW1 and during the depression.

Also he hasn’t been the Spider for five years. Giving it up after his fiancé Ruby died in a mob hit
>>
I just skimmed through one episode in colour after watching the whole show in black and white.

His website are BLACK. Is it like that in the comics? Looks visually distinct and odd. Even Venom makes white webbing
