I can already tell that it would at least be a better performance than Matthew Broderick's milquetoast performance in the 1999 live action film, not that it's saying much. I always wished we got a Jim Carrey or Mike Meyers Inspector Gadget but that's probably never going to happen at this point
Will Ferrell has one character and this couldn't possibly work for anything other than a low budget mediocre kid's movie.Inspector Gadget in general would be pretty good material for a nostalgia-fueled movie so long as you were willing to actually make it stupid and zany rather than just relying on dated humour which they inevitable would.

French Stewart caught the character's mannerisms really well (being a stupid parody of a rugged TV detective without being too silly or serious), and looked the part as well (unlike Broderick, who was way too young for the role). The sequel was a solid kids' flick as a whole; it felt like they were trying to address all the problems people had with the first movie, even though they only had a direct-to-video budget, so the gadgets themselves look like butt.

They should do a reverse bait and switch where penny grows up joins interpol and quickly proves she’s way more competent than gadget, give her a girl boss partner that tells her that gadgets success were really hers and have gadget realise that he’s washed up (penny will feel bad about this) but…… once your through a third of the movie have penny get captured because dr claw has given himself cybernetic implants too and then gadget has to lock the fuck in hard core style and prove he’s the hero penny always knew he was
