Early y2k 2d animated films felt like they were building up to something great, they have an awkward transitional feel to them that, nowadays, makes them feel like masterpieces

And then they just stopped existing
>>
Not really, they feel like the awkward puttering out of an era that came before and was significantly stronger. There was a real sense of "man they just don't make them that good anymore" and it's a big reason the box office numbers became worse and worse as this era went on. The only movie from that era that really feels like it matches up with the earlier stuff is Lilo and Stitch, while both Emperor's New Groove and Road to El Dorado get close in their own ways but miss the mark in others. The rest have moments of greatness scattered across otherwise weak films or bafflingly poor decisions that bring the whole movie down. It really feels like a silver age.

Sinbad is no masterpiece

I'll give you El Dorado, Atlantis, Spirit and Treasure Planet. But the others? No. They're too flawed
>>
>>153994135
Y2K films were kind of the last hurrah for 2D animation in the west.
>>
>(one of the crew members) "Eight months in the sea with nothing but eggs and pickles, you don't know what that can do to a man"
>(Sinbad himself) "We have excellent ocean views, luxurious living quarters, with three gourmet meals a day: pickles, eggs, and pickles"
Sinbad was a bad captain if that's the only thing he fed to his crew

It's because 3DCG is cheaper than 2D and 3D animators aren't unionized like 2D animators and Princess and the Frog was a historic flop because audiences despise 2D and other talking points /co/ made up

"Who the fuck are you talking about"
"WE GOT HIM POOPDICK SPOTTED"

>Titan A.E. killed Fox Animation Studios and Don Bluth/Gary Goldman's carrer

>Osmosis Jones killed Warner Bros Feature Animation

>Sinbad killed 2D DreamWorks movies

A lot of the films made during this time feel like passion projects that were begrudgingly greenlit as a response to adult animation becoming more and more popular. Almost every animated film in the OP pic is edgier than anything those studios released the decade before, visually or narratively.

Sort of, it's just a containment thread for one guy to steamroll every other post with his own opinions and disengage from whatever everybody else is saying

Titan A.E. and Sinbad aren't very good at all

I still don't understand how Atlantis and Treasure Planet managed to flop. Titan A.E., sure, but those first two are easily two of the greatest things Disney's released so far this century. We haven't seen that kind of ambition from them in ages now..
>>
>Jimbo! l got two new friends l'd like you to meet.... Say hello to Mr. Mop and Mrs. Bucket
>>
>>153994135
All of those movies are boring
>>
>"You see, gentlemen, any horse can be broken. There are those in Washington who believe the West will never be settled, the Northern Pacific Railroad will never breach Nebraska... a hostile Lakota will never submit to Providence, and it is that manner of small thinking that would say this horse could never be broken. Discipline, time, and patience are the three great levelers"
>>
>>153999375
It's called "collecting Shrek and Harry Potter's sloppy seconds," those movies ate up all the box office. Treasure Planet and Atlantis looked boring and Disney was still for little girls and kids. Those movies didn't appeal to anyone.

>It's because 3DCG is cheaper than 2D and 3D animators
It's not, like I don't understand why you people keep saying this. It's been proven several times that 3D movies are generally more expensive to make.
OP wasn't even talking about animation style which was dominated by 3D in early 2000s anyways

Sinbad is the only one that doesn't have any lyrical songs

It was a period when studios wanted to show off their experiments in interacting 2D animation with 3D, which is why so many films at that point had an emphasis on spectacle and big action setpieces.

Iron Giant counts, it's 1999.

I'd say the era probably is 1999-2004 (though 2004 is a bit pushing it)

I grew up with the classic disney films on vhs. 2000s 2D films looked so clean in comparison, and the subtle use of 3D was so high tech.
I really thought it was the future of animation. I didn't realize 3D was already creeping in to replace it.

Tried watching Osmosis Jones the other day and it was painful to sit through.

The last hurrah of 2D animation was kinda interesting. Pretty much all of it flopped at the time with a big "meh" to outright hatred of most of them but most of them are looked pretty positively now. Lost art (in both meanings of the phrase) is it people being a bit more insulated from the design by comittee aspect of a lot of these films?

Also, memes aside and a couple of songs way more better than the film deserved, this was a piece of shit.

I find Brother Bear on par with Lilo and Stitch, at least.

>>153994135
Out of these, Road to El Dorado is probably my favorite.

Her animation alone deserved an award.
