New Cartoon Cartoons short https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVJclqaAjO4
>>
>every single thread since this program was announced had someone say “Off The Menu is the only interesting looking one” just because it had a vaguely 90s-looking art style
>comes out
>is essentially just an animated podcast with no real story and pretty limited animation
The backgrounds are very nice.
Something like this would work if the writing was actually funny. Like Space Ghost Coast to Coast or something.
>>
I really don't get the point with some of these. I thought they were all meant to be pilots but some look more like simple shorts and it makes me wonder if CN simply paid a bunch of artists for projects they were already making just to fill a slot. Maybe CN wanted Cartoon Cartoons to come back years ago as a consistent thing with many shorts and pilots every week/month and then immediately gave up on it? This one has to be one of the most boring ones. Like the creator was simply being paid to do a job.
>>
This one was kinda disappointing. I wish it was more toony, but it ended up being basically furry Seinfeld. The character designs and voice acting are pretty good though. Also:

I'm shocked at how much of a nothing cartoon this was, no one could've foreseen that 90% of the short would just be this shot

This, I fully agree with you

My ranking:
Mouthwash = Madison&Skyler = Button's > A for Angel > Harmony > Accordions/Melodica = Maude = Fruitstand > Hungry Ghost > Fools > Bird&Squirrel > Duck > Samson > Afternoon > Mandy >>> Iscream > Jocelyn > Menu >>> absolute dog shit >>> Dracula

This certainly has potential. Got some mad Ricky Gervais Show vibes from this, and I like how they dropped actual facts on seafood and that the jokes weren't just food puns and kiddie humor. I feel it work if they kept the topics diverse. Maybe since they're at a restaurant, they could try and get actual chefs, and the VA's could improv a discussion on a dish they make.

Imagine getting to animate a cartoon and all you come up with is a podcast.

Yeah, kids will love that for sure.
>>
>>153996951
These are a couple of years old after all (shelved), they were made before C11 was made into law which make Canadian outsourcing illegal (because too many Canadian companies were taking American outsource work and listing it as local to get around Canadian broadcast laws).

Also Yowza does have a South Korean branch that is still valid.

This was The Ricky Gervais Show if it was not actually funny and was fully written first instead of just being an animated podcast/radio conversation.

You can’t make a show where the appeal is “it’s a podcast conversation but animated” if the entire fucking thing is scripted to begin with. What’s the point?
>>
>>153996815
All of this shit has been a failure. It shows even when they look for talent they're not gonna find any from the current pool. And no, Mouthwash Madness was not good either.

True, true. The Pizza Boy short, for example, was charming and all, but it wouldn't really hold up as a full series as it would get old after a while.

>>
>>153998957
Basically nothing changed from Off the Menu except for not doing the sketchy 101 Dalmations lines, which I have to assume probably wasn't even planned for the final result and just part of the general quality of the drawing. Really, the actual characters didn't change. The bottom one shows an actual example of obvious change.
>>
>>153999141
Butch Hartman got lucky. He knew and worked with the right people, and happened to be at the right place at the right time. He just basically wrote a couple of episodes for Johnny Bravo, got asked to make a show of his own and teamed up with a good character artist. Same thing with that Emil guy from Bethesda. They were never really that good.

I'm surprised that people are dunking on this one. It was the first one that I really felt had staying power. An animated podcast isn't original, sure, but I can't recall any kids show going for it, making it fresh for younger viewers. The fact it was actually a bit educational was genuinely a delightful surprise (even though I knew all the facts already) so I'd love to see more of these.

Feels like what could happen is the first season follows the formula very strictly, with season 2 allowing them to work off of what has been established by the interactions to have them do different things while still circling back to the podcast. Like how season 1 of Rocko's Modern Life was focused on the title concept of dealing with modern life's obstacles and responsibilities, while season 2 onwards explored the characters and their relationships more.
>>
>>154000302
The chicken and pig are honestly pretty cute, especially the chicken's more timid personality made me want to root for her.
>>
>>154000349
do you really care about the peronal lives of these generic default animals who were just animated after random people recorded themselves speaking
>>
>>154000387
Not yet no but after a season of 24 episodes I might.
>>
>>154000488
24 episodes of your characters just being avatars of a discord conversation and then suddenly acting like they're real characters would be dumb. even worse if it goes into full self-insert territory where the real life problems of the people are turned into an animation just like those twitter webcomics people do

how about just make a real animated show
>>
>>154000349
you really don't think Buttons has more staying power than this? Arcades are a trend that has been dying for decades, kids would rather play Fortnite or watch tiktok on their mom's Ipad, ordering food is common now, and the show follows two opposite characters overburdened with trying to stay afloat despite it all who somehow still manage to not be unlikeable. I thought the setting was limited when I first saw it, but the more and more you think about it, the more possibilities you realize it could have.

It does but I find Buttons too annoying for my tastes. Like I get what they're going for and love Dana Snyder's voice but it felt too by the numbers "retard annoys normal person". I prefer enthusiastic characters to be more likeable and have more substance to why they annoy people.

I'm not gonna lie. Most of these shorts have been fucking awful, did they really expect these to be proper shows?
>>
>>154000998
They won't, most of them got finished 5 years ago.
>>
>>154001007
Obviously they won't. But even if they released when they were supposed to, they still would've been dogshit that appealed to nobody. I can think of only TWO shorts (the shoulder angel and pizza place ones) that would even be somewhat enjoyable as a full show.
I hate siding with WB, but holy shit what a waste of money and time for most of these
>>
>>154000998
I said it before and I'll say it again. My theory is that they wanted to bring back cartoon cartoons as a recurring, consistent anthology show, and maybe create engagement online by having people vote and discuss the shorts constantly in an attempt to reinvent themselves years ago. It would explain why none of the pilots are 20 minutes long or why some of them are from wildly different years. CN just needed as many shorts and pilots as possible to fill segments so they acquired anything and everything that moved, but they must have given up on the idea after some time, maybe it started to become too costly paying entire teams a full salary for about a year per short, or maybe some new leadership decided it wasn't worth it, so they just ended up releasing each one separately so as to not waste it. Also, I thought pilots were rare because I was only seeing the more popular ones, but after I started to watch these, my main youtube page started to become inundated by student films and indie animations, there must be thousands and thousands of them.
>>
>>154000349

>>
>>154000572
Isn't this ugly fuck still in jail?
>>
>>153996815
Kinda wish the title dropped the article to be “Off Menu”.
>>154000349
>An animated podcast isn't original, sure, but I can't recall any kids show going for it, making it fresh for younger viewers.
Kids watch streamers - leaning into this basic concept while updating the references and format a little could be very effective.
>>154000998
Guessing leaders from the previous shorts programs were gone and the sauce on wrangling one was lost. The one thing these all seem to have in common is the artists being left to their own devices when developing the pitch.
>>
i like the characters

>>154001888

Segment from E&H's Bullet/Bullet which is a Mad Max knock off, Disney paid for it so they were able to get top talent like Toshihiko Masuda, Kazuhide Tomonaga, Yoshinobu Michihata (he animated this scene), Hisao Yokobori and Dan Haskett who did the characters designs to those segments because Disney money and 90s Telecom shows were always designed in the States in terms of primary characters.

Yoshiteru Tsujino (the co-creator of Tengai Makyo) did character designs for the main segment, he got has many ex-Telecom people as he could that haven't retired or are reserved at another studio because Disney wanted 90s Telecom while Tsujino got laid off from Telecom in 1988 to pay off TMS' (Telecom's parent company) losses on Akira (Telecom was a sub contractor on Akira) so Tsujino got Masuda to run those segments since he ran Telecom in the 90s.

>>
>>154003222
The biggest drawback are the designs. I said this before and I'll say it again: this could work much better with puppets.
Duck was good goreror

i've gotten a bit of pushback for that take so i rewatched both. i guess afternoon is pretty harmless but i can barely sit through it. i usually rate shows for toddlers lower unless they're well-written or aesthetically interesting. victoria vincent's art bumps it up a little. my main thing is that the premise feels weak and being a toddler show it probably won't have any major lore developments. dracula has great background art and a better premise but the artstyle blows and the comedy falls flat. i'd say the art is about on par with afternoon overall. also i'm not sure how everyone else feels but if dracula had a less grating voice it'd move up a few ranks. i've been thinking about moving duck down too but it at least takes a swing even if it executes it poorly. i'll think about it some and might shift my rankings next week.

there's no good "goreror", anon. There's only immature 12 year old edgelords who seek out gore to feel artificially tough because they've never experienced any actual stress, panic or suffering, like a rich white guy pretending to be black. And mentally ill people who have actually suffered, but instead of solving their problems and growing as a person, they instead go for the low-hanging fruit of wanting others to be miserable to feel less miserable about themselves temporarily like a narcissistic mean girl who got neglected and/or abused. There's a good chance I've described you, and if that's the case, save yourself the humiliation of throwing some ad hominem that will only prove me right and instead actually try to recognize that you can be better than this.

They talk way too much and it reminds me of that old Spike TV show that one Nick creator did of the guys just sitting at a bar and talking, I don't remember the name but I'm getting those vibes.

Not a bad concept for Adult Swim but it doesn't work here. And the cartoony stuff isn't good at all, I was expecting more honestly judging by the art.

Very mid and misleading.
