>Listen, I just wanted to let you know you don't have to worry about me trying to be your friend anymore. Look, maybe us Mormons do believe in crazy stories that make absolutely no sense, and maybe Joseph Smith did make it all up, but I have a great life, and a great family, and I have the Book of Mormon to thank for that. The truth is, I don't care if Joseph Smith made it all up, because what the church teaches now is loving your family, being nice and helping people. And even though people in this town might think that's stupid, I still choose to believe in it. Money funneled into the investment which went back into the church which went back into the investment via shell companies. The scandal isn't that they had the investments but that they used a shit ton of legal fuckery to fudge numbers, dodge taxes. The church got fined one million, the fund got fined 4 million. It's also been speculated that the vast majority of megachurches do this which is the real reason you keep seeing big celebrities and businessmen joining them. Their parents don't believe in real medicine and it led to their kids having lifelong health problems as adults. Playing board games and being nice is fun when you're a kid but Matt and Trey didn't grow up around these people as adults. I highly doubt that Matt and Trey would ever socialize with a Mormon, they mostly view them as naive simpletons who live in Colorado. This point that Matt and Trey make is such a cop-out because they didn't know how to end the episode in a punk, subversive way and the only way to do that is to ironically support Mormons. It's one of many times they've had retarded endings, the other being the Manbearpig episode being anti-climate change. Their hate for liberals and libertarians made them contrarians for most of their 30s.Truth is, Mormons are fucking weird people and they are cult-like in their dull towns. It's not a normal religion by any means, it originated as a sex cult for Joseph Smith. You don't have to be Atheist to be smart, but being Mormon is genuinely one of the dumbest choices an adult can do and one of the worst things you can do for raising a family. The only reason they're nicer to Mormons than Scientologists is that Scientology is an LA celebrity cult, not a blue collar cult from their hometown.

>>154018867It was a two parter, even. Time to Get Cereal (s22e6) and Nobody got Cereal? (s22e7).
>>154001463Hm... Surprisingly difficult. I think the most I can do is point out that if having activities with your family and being nice to other people is what you like about being a mormon, then it shouldn't require you to accept everything else about Mormonism. Admittedly, that is a counter-argument against the idea that any religion is good simply because churches are glorified community centres and as if a charity bake sale can't happen unless you attach belief in god to it. The foundation of mormonism in particular is very clearly bullshit, it can't even hide behind ambiguities in the historical and archaeological record like most other religions, or even ingrained traditions going back to time immemorial. Knowing anything for sure about Jesus is impossible because the only evidence of his existence are biased texts all written decades after he died, so we don't know how much is bullshit. The Exodus out of Egypt and the conquest of Canaan may have been confirmed to be fiction fairly recently, but the tradition of thinking it was real stretches back so far that it will take a very long time for the belief in it to completely fade. With Mormonism, it just falls apart. Smith lived about 200 years ago, when record keeping of any schmuck since birth was in full swing, so we know this idiot was a conman before he started his church, that the church was a con for him to get laid/power and that he didn't die a martyr. The book of Mormon itself, ignoring the obvious attempt to shield it from a contradictory "translation", makes no sense as a historical document. All the evidence points to Native Americans being from East Asia long before Hebrews ever existed with no indication that any Jews lived in the Americas before Columbus, with the introduction of old world farm animals being something that would have been known in Smith's own time, etc.Be nice if you want but you don't need to pretend this bullshit has anything to do with being nice.

That shows independence, intellectual strength and solid moral character. Generally good qualities. Note that I'm saying that about criticism of any lifelong belief, not specifically religion.
>>154015669Anon, you're arguing with a magic underwear bot. He's trolling you.
>>154023996It's because the "bad ones" run your police departments and local government offices. Kind of a power disparity, even if the raw numbers are with the good ones.
>>154014042if you need to use the fear of going to hell to make people good then maybe those people were never that good to begin with.
South Park threads are all stealth threads to talk about politics and religion. The only real discussion is in the generals.
>>154001463pretentious
>>154023587Having grown up in a non-religious family, literal grown ups congregating into cults and using their own fairy tales unironically as justification for their actions (ranging from passing legislations banning/mandating things to being nice/hateful to certain groups of people or literally murdering others) feels pretty fucking scary to me.It's especially insane you're expected to pretend you take these people seriously.
>>154001463Why Europeans are so obsessed with Eastern religions. I’d rather have pagan loons or any other kind of loons than Christian loons. At least they revere something that originated from their own people. The Bible is largely ethno-nationalist propaganda. Even Norse religions are more open to outsiders.
>>154008238The problem is the most hardcore and annoying of fundies aren't inherently good people. They're nasty and evil and the world of the Bible, any Bible, and the fear of punishment is the only reason they do good. You can tell because of how evil they get when it's against an 'acceptable' target. Meanwhile actually good people don't need a leash. They aren't perfect but they aren't inherently evil either so they're mostly just okay.
SP fans are a bunch of fudge packer losers that are into /cm/ and /ss/ stuff involving the stupid boy characters
>>154024390If a cartoon treads on religious or political grounds, it's inevitable. If you want to be more on topic why not ask why the South Park team decided to give Mormons, who already had exposés on them out since a some time ago, such a favorable depiction in their cartoon?
>>154001463>How do you respond without sounding mad?Almost every Mormon friend I've had, to include a few that I've known since elementary school, has grown up to have various religious traumas and psychosexual complexes, and most distanced themselves from or outright quit the church. That says more than I ever could
>>154001463You can do all that without a big stupid storybook written by a lying con-man.
>>154027645The 3 middle-eastern religions (practically different flavors of the same thing) took over most of the world and decimated thousands of cultures. That was the whole point.>>154024223>Those people are capable of critically analyzing and making difficult, mature decisions about ideas they were indoctrinated from birth into believingI suppose this is true. The opposite is quite tragic and a lot more common too.It appears a lot of people seem to be disappointed in religion, which was forced onto them in most cases, in their teens and 20s, where it's most natural to experiment and rebel, and then they "rediscover" it and become religious again. So it's basically a mind virus that goes into dormancy for a decade or two, only to come back eventually.
>>154001492Dirty soda?
>>154029115It's a thing Mormons innovated because they're not allowed to have alcohol, and they only recently got okay with colas (and only because Mitt Romney was caught drinking one in public). You basically take any soda you can think of, then add candies, flavored syrups, or coffee creamer (I don't know where they get it, if nobody drinks coffee...), and that's your dirty soda.
>>154029115>>154029200It's a recent creation. You take a soda, add cream and some flavors, and ta-da. My sister has been drinking them instead of beer recently.
How similar are Mormons and JWs in terms of fucked up cult tactics?
I would've never acted like Stan to begin with to get the conversation to this point. If I were to antagonize Gary, it would be calling his religion polytheistic and saying that he's going against the word of God by believing a prophet who claims we can all become mini-gods of other planets.
>>154015148Where is the big bang in the bible? The bible says that the earth was created before the stars and the sky is a solid dome with water above it.And the big bang theory does NOT say that the universe began with the big bang. Only that it expanded from a singularity, and we have no idea what may have happened before that.

>>154029200>>154029271Huh, didn't know that. That's kind if neat I suppose.
