I really relate to Bojack treating his mom like shit. The only reason bad parents become subservient later on is because they're too old and frail to be their shitty selves. The fact that the horse girl, and by extension the viewer, treats it like a bad thing is the same kind of moralizing like you can't ever kill the villain because that makes you just as bad.
>>
>>154001774
I will always advocate for treating shitty parents like garbage, not forgiving them and never, ever giving them another opportunity to hurt you.

my momington was abusive when I was younger, but now she's ditzy and infirm and kind and it's pointless. do I forgive her for the wrongdoings she did? no, I don't. but there's no point in keeping that hatred with me when that person feels dead and gone. if I can have a now relatively healthy relationship with my mother and deal with the consequences of that shitty parenting on my own time, then so be it. it's better than trying to get back at someone that ultimately won't change anything. (I will make exception to parents who are still evil bastards even in old age - do what you will with them)

It’s kinda bitchmade too. It’s like getting back at a bully after they get put in a vegetative state from a car crash or something. What is the point.

My biggest problem with Bojack has always been that he’s just a whiny bitch
>>

Its my words....they are becoming too normal....

How did you wake up this morning?

>What is the point

Personal satisfaction. From a utilitarian viewpoint, it serves as a deterrent. Pretty much every culture has a variation of 'you reap what you sow'.

Isn’t it satisfying already watching their lives completely ruined if not ended entirely?

Shut up Katara. You could have added more suffering, that's the point.

Wasn't she senile and lobptomised or something? Odd combination. How many people have senile lobotomised parents irl?

Trauma redemption slop is so trite, we need more revenge on bad parents

It's weird how this was portrayed with nuance (her dad was given bad medical advice by "the experts" and he "trusted the scienece" only to bitterly regret it) but the actual effect on the character was the exact same as if it had been a fairy tale about how evil her dad was.
>>
It's pointless
>>
I can't relate and I'm having the opposite problem where both my parents nearly died in the past and now I'm scared to death of them dying and leaving me. It's to the point where I have to check and see if they're still breathing when they're asleep to feel better and get some sleep myself.
>>
>>154002024
I woke up this morning and got myself a gun.
My momma always said I'd be the chosen one.
>>
Remaining angry at someone who isn't themselves anymore is pointless. The person who was emotionally abusive to him was essentially already dead so bullying an incapable old woman definitely was just a psychotic thing to do.

Same as if someone is literally dead. They're dead. Time to get over being angry at them.

This only it’s more about apathy and being unable to keep the feeling going. People really underestimate how hard it is to absolutely despise someone or how much energy it takes. Especially when you’re not really doing anything with it. Do I like her? No, would I be sad if she died tomorrow, absolutely not. But I just can’t bring myself to feel the same burning hatred I once did. Though I think in your case it’s more of you are seeing reality punish her. It’s a kind of vengeance that is born of time. And in the end to show that you are not at their level of spite in pettiness is the ultimate kind of revenge.

Only Jews and Anglos would think this sort of behavior is acceptable. The concept of filial piety is alien to these demographics

>durr filial piety means enabling bad behavior

Only if you're a little bitch. Filial piety means that you have to take responsibility for the sake of the family/community and HELP YOUR PARENTS even if they're flat out stupid and out of touch, helplessly ineffective, or moronically abusive. It does not mean allowing them to exploit you, hurt you, steal from you, bad mouth you, lie to you, cheat you, or take advantage of your kindness. It means recognizing that your parents are human beings: traumatized and hurt people who in many ways are still children with scars and open wounds who crave acceptance, safety, stability, and love. It means realizing that in some ways, you have to be the parent for a child who was never truly allowed to be a child and never had a proper parent when they needed it most.

There is an example of this in Chinese thought: if an emperor has become mad, irresponsible, and is leading his kingdom into decline, then it is the duty of his son to take away power from his father and place him under house arrest and do his best to heal his father until he is of sound mind.

Let go of your hatred and your wrath. Snuff out the flames of suffering, lest you burn the people around you and yourself. Be kind.
>>
>>154001828
I don't think you should actively abuse them. But you should cut toxic people out of your life and recognize you don't owe them anything.

Not when the personality I'm actually mad at is already gone and rotted out of the brain. The leftover husk won't remember and nobody else was there, I'd be haunting me with things that don't exist for anybody else anymore.

When my parents retire I'm gonna make sure to put them in a home with an all-black staff. Not majority black, 100% black staff.
>>
By the time they're as far along into dementia as his mother was, they're not even the same person anymore. He never had the balls as a man to confront his mother when she had her faculties, he took advantage of her weakened mental state.
>>
>>154006301

People are too naturally intune with each other to survive that kind of hatred. It sounds like hippy shit but ultimately what you do to others is what you do to yourself. Empathy is social safety mechanism, it's not a weakness.

My father is doing this currently and I'm being told to "leave it at the altar", forgive him, but "not forget". I haven't forgotten. That's why I hate him and would prefer he fuck off instead of trying to be grandpa now after his actions took two stable homes from us, left us in renting situations for the rest of our childhood while my poor mother that he beat and blamed for having my eldest brother worked three jobs to provide for us, then just up and ran away. Sorry, pal. I see you're withering away. You're scared of being alone at the end. I was scared and alone as a child without my father. The difference is that I wasn't close to the reaper like you are now and that I'm not alone now. You will be alone when you face the inevitable. I won't even be there to see your corpse off.

Her mother got lobotomized. And up until she was in a wheelchair, I'd have railed Bea until she forgot she was supposed to be a bitch towards Bojack. Good dick could have fixed her.
>>
>>154006301
By that same measure, the parent should be taking responsibility for thier own actions as well, no? Why should I honor someone who makes no effort to honor me in return?
>its the right thing to do
Yeah, no, Im not going to entertain that thought. If they're not going to meet me halfway from the get go, why should I even bother?

Adults.

>>154006301
If a flower is wilted and spreading disease to the rest of the plants you cut it off. The parent is making the family dysfunctional and you should simply try to cut them off from your life instead of hopelessly trying to "fix" them (you won't, no matter what your chink proverbs say. not how people work. people fix themselves or stay broken).

Joseph Sugarman was one of the most based characters of the show. So much so, he made alot of foids online seethe.

It's a toy.

I think it's all well and good to give up your spite for your own mental health, though recognize it is selfish.
Forgiving people is ultimately a selfish thing to do, especially when they do not deserve to be forgiven: spite should not fuel you but rather you should fuel spite.
It's not about a vendetta either, it's about justice.
Shitty behaviour has to be punished, has to be made an example of because culturally speaking if it isn't made an example of people may be tempted to act this way.
Of course, at this point you may say
>if shitty people only act nice because they're afraid to be shitty you're not actually making them better people
And to that I agree, however I think in a just world people should be rightfully afraid to do evil and if they can't be afraid for the wellbeing of others than they should definitively be afraid for their own.

Obviously, I don't condone abusing your elderly parent but there is no being "bitchmade" when it comes to getting revenge on a bully because bullies are bitchmade themselves, otherwise they wouldn't be bullies to begin with. You don't get to bully someone and then try to take advantage of your victim's sense of honor and principles as a way for you to escape consequences.

If some career felon murdered some innocent woman, that woman's multiple brothers have every moral right to jump him all at once without feeling any shame for it.
>>
>>154018656
I think you need to try to stop a bully while they’re at their peak nastiness. That way you can demoralize them from being even worse.
