Millions of people are (allegedly) still watching the Simpsons, yet I've never heard anyone discuss recent episodes irl or online.What's up with that?
Nobody is watching the Simpsons in earnest anymore, all those views are from retirement homes and geriatrics who just have their TVs permanently set to Fox because it's their only source of news and the Simpsons just so happens to play on it but they can't be fucked to get off their asses and change the channel so they just leave it on as background noise.

Their methodology is just broken because it was designed with the assumption that all Americans that own televisions actually watch TV every day, which is no longer true and hasn't been for years.

Basically, they randomly select a certain number of homes in each region then offer the homeowner something in return for installing a monitoring box on their television. My uncle's family was a participant back in the early '90s and back then it was a chunky thing that was almost like a second cable box that you had to enter a code into each time you started watching TV. Each family member got a different code so they could separate who was watching for the demographic numbers. Looking it up, the modern system they give each family member a personal remote control instead of having to enter a code but otherwise it's pretty much the same.
