>June 2nd, 2008: Artist Tim Buckley published "Loss" as part of his webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del.Happy Birthday (lol)
>>154008321>Loss' baby would have been 18 todaydamn
>>154008577I mean, it was a miscarriage, not a stillbirth. So if it survived, the birth, and therefore the birthday, would be later on in the year.
>>154008321This comic page will out live Fuckley and he hates that.
>>154008321I've seen so many memes of this that just looking at the actual page with the perspective that it was intended to be entirely serious feels strange
>>154008321I sincerely wonder how many people these days have only seen meme renditions rather than the original and don't even know it started as a comic, or even if they have seen the comic if they understand why it became such a huge meme in the first place.
>>154010793This guy>>154010658CAD was always kind of shitty and zany, but not especially shitty by the unregulated standard of webcomics. He put out strips regularly and if the quality of the art and writing were unremarkable, they were at least a little polished and professional. The issue with Loss specifically was that it came out of fucking nowhere and attempted levity and drama in what was nominally a comedy strip. The author was also a notoriously egotistical piece of shit who threatened legal action against a high schooler who used CAD characters in a class presentation, or wholesale ripped off the design for a character from what was, at the time, one of the first google image search results for "punk girl"
>>154011166>Oh great, I'm drawn by an amateur. Jeez...
PvP was better than CAD from what I recall.
B^U
>>154010658It's like drawing your dad having a heart attack and then getting mad when everyone makes fun of it.
>>154011166CTRL+ALT+DEL was also the epitome of "gamer culture comics" that Penny Arcade had started at the time with stuff like Jack Thompson being a villain. It existed in a landscape before every webcomic gets a weird "my personal emotional issues" arc. Which is just a huge component of 2000s memes in general. They'd be flashes in the pan in today's internet.Like "you have to eat all the eggs" would be the most generic redditslop post in history.
>>154011821It's weird to look back and remember that, because I think at this point it feels like more people are forgiving of Buckley than of Kurtz. But there was a time when people could see PVP was the way better strip.>>154008605Initially that was true, he was angry about how it was getting received. But there was an article back in 2018 where he basically accepted it and finds it funny.
>>154012710>he accepts it and finds it funny>"i'm not mad. I'm actually laughing"
>>154012647That's clever using Shemp.
I miss 2008.
>>154008321B^Uckley has to have embraced it by now.His funeral and eulogy will probably comprise miscarriage puns.
>>154010658That’s why it became a meme in the first place. It was intended to be serious but came across as really awkward immediately upon publication.
I actually went back and looked at the non-meme CAD comics, and they're so lame and unfunny it's almost charming.
>>154008321I Found the update on this comic pretty clever>>154012647Lmao amazing
>>154012754Maybe? But based on everything I remember reading about Buckley back in the 00s I would've expected him to seethe a lot over it for a long time. It just seems more like he got over it in a shorter time than I'd expect him to.
>>154010658It became a meme for a reason. Making a comic strip out of someone's miscarriage for his Penny-Arcade-ripoff epic gamer webcomic just came across as very weird and tasteless and not treating the situation with the appropriate level of gravitas, not to mention being a jarring tone shift from the usual unfunny gamer jokes.
>>154008321And to think this is a doomed timeline because he rebooted his series so that Ethan is a superhero working at a game store and currently in a relationship with a clingy and possessive woman that's taller and bigger than him.
>>154014872You mean the timeline was miscarried?
>>154014872No way that's real-
>>154015447Words words words
>>154012773>Hey, we're getting in a rut!
>>154015559Well now it's a superhero comic so that's appropriate
>>154008321
>>154015864ouch
>>154008321Does the comic even exist anymore?Didn't the Lackadiasy artist criticise Ctrl+Alt+Del for its shitty reuse of face expressions and generally being a clipped together recycled mess?
>It's on Wikipedia's "On this day" section on the front pageWhat are we thinking lads, based or cringe?
>>154016523>International Whores' Day
What's Buckley doing now days?
>>154008321the day comedy was aborted
>>154016551Have you called your mother today?
>>154016551Must be Frank Miller's birthday
>>154016565He's short. How do you even come back from being a meme? No one is gonna take you or your comic srsly. Like Bikecuck.
>>154012647fucking incredible
>>154016565that girl must be nearly 30 by now
>>154011858amazing how the art quality of his stuff increased after leaving buzz feed
>>154012773LMAO
happy anniversaryB^U
>>154020913
>>154014770he's mellowed the fuck out. he has a wife and, despite this comic, a kid as well. he basically doesn't engage with the internet anymore aside from uploading comics.
>>154008321>June 2nd, 2008: Artist Tim Buckley published "Loss" as part of his webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del.Is this loss?
