The Critic might be getting a revival soon, thoughts?
>>
>>154013999
It'll suck. They tried once in the early 2000's as a webtoon and that shit sucked too.

Funny I just watched the series
I liked alot fo the jokes but Its really dated, I wish they went the original Simpsons rule of only using fake celebrities
I guess they already have a bit ready, the perception of keeanu reeves is totally different
>>
>>154013999
Please no
>>
Didn't they try a web series at about the same time as John K. and the Lenore guy, when shockwave was new?
>>
>>154014014
I guess they didn't want to do a show about an elderly Jay likely out of work due to the changing media environment.
>>

I'll believe it when I see it. Though yea, >>154014008 isn't wrong that it'll probably be bad since the animation will undoubtedly be cheap and stilted. Not that the original show was setting standards for animation itself, but it at least was pretty enjoyable to look at. Doesn't help that most of the original cast is either dead or retired. I'm probably right in guessing Jean and Reiss probably don't the magic touch they used to.
Also, just looked up a possible episode idea
>Jay goes to a Mets game and is hit on by Mrs. Mets
So that sounds like Alice is either being written out or sidelined, which is just lame. Jay constantly fumbling the bag got pretty old when that was nearly the case of every season 1 episode.
And we all know the jokes will be "modern" because God fucking forbid anybody crack a fat joke or joke about a dude who acts guy but bags 10s like he's a damn hustler.
>>
>>154013999
It stinks!
>>
>>154013999
jesus christ, just let old shows be old shows already.
>>
>>154014327
Yep, and it was dogshit. While they had tried to return to the focus on film parodies, the animation was garbage, looking worse than even the earliest Newgrounds animations. The jokes didn't have much punch to them. And they implied Jay got married to Alice and once again destroyed a relationship since he mentions a second ex-wife.

It should’ve gotten a reboot decades ago. They should bring this back too.
>>
>>154014401
I thought they did, but with was shitty CG or whatever that tried to look like claymation, but lacked the visual appeal and solid writing of the original show.
>>
>>154013999
I’ll give it a chance, but I don’t think it’ll be good, maybe I’ll be plea toy surprised but I doubt it.
>>
>>154014401
Celebrity deathmatch would be one of the few shows that could be brought back since it didn't really have much of a plot or cast or recurring characters. It's just fights. It would be nearly impossible to do it without people reading a bunch of political malarky into it, though. It could never just be about lampooning celebrities while depicting gratuitous violence, but they'd each end up being representative of their views (whether done intentionally or not) and the outcome of the fights would be suspect of indicating the views of the people who worked on the show with the winner being whoever they ideologically supported.

The problem with a show like The Critic is that it relied on taking pot shots at Hollywood. Modern cinema is so coddled that nobody is allowed to make fun of awful movies anymore without being toxic.
>>
>>154013999
It won't have Duke, and that a Duketrophe
>>
>>154015558
this man is broken and sick
>>
>>154013999
as long as Maurice is involved.
It won't be the same with Duke's voice dead, but... we do need the wisdom of The Critic now more than ever. Actually, i say that, that was a lot truer a decade and change ago. Movies now are like that Chanel suit Marge altered and altered until it fell apart. There's so little you can say, the only logical reaction to everything be made now is to put your face into both of your hands and try to keep it together
and Jay is a guy who thought 90s blockbusters 'stunk.' Yknow, the movies that fucking rocked but were just a little less smart than they used to be. so..
>>
>>154014363
I loved when you could tell they added some dialogue in later, because the scene just freezes with no mouths onscreen, or the lip flaps are totally wrong and clearly spliced
>>154014352
if Nostalgia Critic guest stars, that would be amazing

nope, but they are quite rashy and they have that like, shitty n64 webbing texture over the top, like it's clearly just a color change and no actual veins are involved.
>>154016374
The trouble, I think, is that a lot of these things died way too soon. So we want to bring them back, but we want to bring them back to BACK THEN. we want Futurama to go through the 2000s, then end in 2010 with a big finale "Wow i've been in the future for a decade now, the end"
but we didn't get that. and we want The Critic to come back and continue through the 90s, out to like 2002, then stop. Maybe to come back again around '09 briefly, but that's it. We don't want it NOW.

They are, but both are in their mid-70s, which means they could go at any time. Margo would have to be replaced since Nancy would cost a goddamn gazillion dollars to bring back (and probably want larger roles if she's only playing Margo).
Shame that so many of the cast are gone or retired.
>>
I feel like Sharknado kinda killed any ability to comment on bad movies anymore. youtube critics tend to stick to the 80s through the 2000s.
>>154017468
I wouldn't mind her taking on a few extra roles, she has good vocal range. She probably would cost a lot, though.
yeah.. This show.. this was special. Still, the only truly irreplaceable members are Jon and Maurice.

Yea, while season 2 gave us Alice, they also made Margo all puffy for some reason, I guess maybe to show that even though she wasn't Jay's biological sis, they grew more similarly than the original designs implied. But yea, something between the designs would be nice, keeping Jay stubby and bald, but making sure the girls can be lovely.
>>154017633
How much did they have written out before the show was canned? I know back then, plenty of shows would have mountains of scripts, some of which would just shift unproduced episodes between seasons in some cases.

Margo had at least 3 very different designs, a common affliction of a recurring but not even secondary character. I definitely remember not liking her as much with the fatter face.

I rewatched it last year and I was shocked by how unfunny the show was. It had some good gags, but the majority of both seasons just aren't that funny.

I don't know if they can bring this show back, make it modern, and have it be funny in any way. Hollywood is already more of a self parody than it was in the show back in the 90s when they were just making up ridiculous shit that wasn't even remotely true to how cheesy hollywood was in their time.

Margo was a pretty major character in the first season and then reduced to almost being a background character in the second.

Part of that was Alice since Season 1 Margo was pretty much the only good thing in Jay's life besides Marty and Alice took over that role in the second season. The rest was the heavier focus on the wackier supporting characters like Franklin.

Celebrity Deathmatch did get a revival back in 2006. I still think of it as the "new" Celebrity Deathmatch even though it's been like 20 years. It didn't involve the original people and it was garbage. I mean all you have to do is take a look at the shitty new models to know it was going to be trash.

Plus it was relegated to MTV2 so no surprise not many people ever saw it. Aside from that they announced a reboot in 2015 and then again in 2018 but nothing ever came of it.

Pretty sure they didn't. They also apparently replaced Debbie Matenopoulos with pic-related, some Asian lady called Tally Wong (Debbie was a real person who I guess didn't want to return, Tally is fictional).

What's extra weird is they kept using referee Mills Lane as a character with a shitty sound-a-like even though the real one suffered a stroke and couldn't speak by that time. He died in 2022 so there's zero chance of getting a real Mill Lane referee voice in any potential revival.

Exactly. An episode where Jay is critical of some diverse movie could lend itself to some interesting discussion after he becomes cancelled as a racist sexist homophobe.

>we want to bring them back, but we want to bring them back to BACK THEN
Right. And I get that. There are plenty of shows I wish HAD continued, but whenever they're brought back after a gap they're never quite the same and that almost always makes them worse.
But you'd think by this point fans would pretty much know the drill. Sure, we want the show to come back and actually be good, but since that never happens, why keep your hopes up when yet another abortion of a reboot is proposed?

OP makes it sound like it's the creators Al Jean and Mike Reiss who are trying to get it revived. Not like the Critic was ever popular, so I doubt it's execs looking at what IPs they own to milk and more like Al Jean trying to get it back on the air since he has more pull what with being Simpsons showrunner for so long.

We're not talking about Star Wars here. Critic is probably most famous for being the guy in that one Simpsons episode. Also if it DOES come back there is a non-zero chance we will have a super cringe-y episode commenting on modern YouTube critics with guest stars Angry Video Game Nerd and Nostalgia Critic. In which case AVGN/Nostalgia Critic will in a weird way end up canon to the Simpsons due to the crossover.
