In Episodes 7 and 8, Jax began to work as a member of the group without his 'funny one' mask and mellowed out, while Caine gradually turned into a violent tyrant and repeatedly showed that as an AI, he is unable to be change his way of thinking. Within that progression, it was almost impossible to naturally have Jax meet a tragic end and Caine be redeemed in just a single episode—and of course, this attempt failed. Some people claim that the message was “Caine accepted change, while Jax did not,” but considering the development up through Episode 8 and the relationships between the characters, the opposite direction would have been far easier to execute and far more convincing.
