I feel like these chutes gave people the wrong impression about how Wolverine's claws work. They make it look like a weapon that's part of his glove, not retractable bones that jut out of his skin when he extends them.
>>
they're intake vents like jets have.
>>
maybe they act like bearings so the claw doesn't catch on a random part of the glove?

To me this is how Logan's claws should extend and the way the comics often portrayed those holes on his gloves don't fit this design (since those often placed the holes on top of his hand rather than between his knuckles).

The retractable claws, despite being the his most iconic power, are the least impressive of his powers. Without his healing factor, durability, and literal titanium bones, the ability to have an on-demand built in melee weapon that can be sheathed & unsheathed at will would be unimpressive.

They do kind of feel tacked-on in order to give the "Wolverine" moniker more substance.

Counterpoint, his go to civies alt is a wifebeater with no handcoverings, Even casuals learn that his claws are internal part of his body.

Originally it was further back in the hand it was due to the movies that it moved to be there

I can kind of see how they'd work if they were emerging from the top of his forearm rather than the front of his fists but they feel less like extensions of his hand like that, which is why I prefer them to come out from between his knuckles.

The first arc with him that I read was the one with Lang's sentinels (starting in #98) and in it it's actually a thing that Cyclops thought Wolverine's claws were part of his gloves for that exact reason.

That's because as originally conceived they were part of his gloves

You look at these huge things and you can tell they did not consider these retracting into an arm
>>
>He has slits between his knuckles that allow the bone claws to come out normally, but the adamantium blades attached to them slice through his hand, which he then heals from instantly
Do I have this right?
>>

I've always hated this, it feels off. I get it's more "Realistic" but after a decade+ of seeing Wolverine, it just sticks out.
>>
>>154021135
That's actually right when they retcon his claws as being part of him lol
>>
>>154021342
To me it's just a subtlety. There isn't really anything having the claws extend out the top of his forearms changes by having them extend from between his knuckles but by doing the latter I can just make a little more sense of what's happening in his hand when his claws extend (like he's clenching his fist in order to trigger the tendons connected to his claws). If envisioning what's happening when they come out from around his wrist makes more sense to you then that's fine.
>>
I will say having the claws extend from the top of his wrist does mean he can more functionally open his hands when the claws are out, vs. the knuckle-claws where it's easier to picture him only having them out when his fist is closed.
>>
When I first saw Wolverine and learned about what made him like he was I hadn't been exposed to the bone claws part of it so I thought the holes the claws were coming out of were actually grafted into his hand and the claws were added as part of his Weapon X conversion (so his gloves simply accommodated those holes by having openings around them and are just regular gloves).

Honestly I still like that explanation more than the bone claws explanation (since it removes the "tacked on" nature of the claws as being part of his whole mutation - they're "tacked on" because they literally would have been tacked on by Weapon X), even if it's not the case.
>>

If all he had was the claws, they'd probably rip right out of the cartilage they slide back and forth on, and he'd feel tired and cold the minute after he takes them out.
>>
>>154021340
His hands should be healing over whenever his claws are retracted. Even before they were coated in Adamantium they would have to overcome his healing factor to extend beyond his skin.
>>
I thought they were a sheathe so he wouldn't fuck his gloves up each time
>>
>>154019572
Weren't they originally just part of his gloves when he showed up as a dude attacking Hulk?
>>
>>154021522
One comic says that stabbing people then retracting his claws would eventually taint his blood if not for the healing factor.
>>
>>154019931
>are the least impressive of his powers
Except the part where his adamantium is some magic bullshit that can cut through literally whatever the fuck the writer wants. Cut through time, why not. Because noone seems to know the difference between a metal being hard and it being sharp.
