The truth is the character designs are dog shit, what people actually like is the color co-ordination with the art. It's very sophisticated and of the era it is pretending to be but that's where the bar stops. They are designed like they are meant to be concept characters for a puppet show such as sesame street, but they are so overdetailed and divorced from puppet mechanical limitations that it just kinda looks like sparkledog tumblr kitch instead of being a supposedly old kids show.
