I think why Jax doesn't quite work as a character for me is that we don't see him deteriorate. He's the same guy in episode 1 as episode 9. Nothing anyone did or said to him meant anything. He was going to abstract regardless. That's not inherently wrong, per se, but I like a lead character to have a narrative trajectory - be that upwards, downwards, sidewards... something! It feels a bit pointless. Sad guy who couldn't open up continued to fail to open up until he died. The end. The story of how he got to that point is the interesting part of his journey, and that was skimmed over through flashbacks in episode 9.
