For instance, the first one starts off with the fairy tale creatures being rounded up and dumped in Shrek's property; it's actually the impetus for the entire plot since that's the reason he and Donkey go to see Farquaad. The scene where Farquaad tortures Gingy reinforces this plot, but then the magic mirror shows up in the same scene and the movie shifts into a romance-based plot as it goes along and this plot thread is left hanging. We don't even see the other fairy tale creatures until the end of the movie. It's not really a major problem since the movie's main two aims are 1) Shrek's character arc and 2) making the audience laugh, but it highlights that tight plots were not the franchise's focus.

The story of Shrek the Third makes very little sense given that Shrek should just be considered a King Consort with Fiona being of the Royal line through her mother she would be the actual Queen in power. Consorts generally aren't seen as equal to their royal spouses and make very little part in a kingdom's decision making.Far Far Away already had a female monarch before with Fiona's mom being of Royal Blood since the King was literally just a frog.Shrek seeking out Arthur to take over kingship is actively undermining Fiona's claim. We know that Fiona's claim is valid since that's the whole reason behind the Charming/Fairy Godmother plot in the first place.
