Is there such a thing as an "inappropriate art style" for the type of story you're telling? Like, if you're telling the story of Dahmer as a neglected, alcoholic teenager and how people should be more wary of warning signs, is it fine to use a MAD-esque art style, or do you think it conflicts with the seriousness of the writing? If you make this great fantasy epic with no hint of irony, is it a bad decision to use a Scott Pilgrim type of art style? Or do you think you can make any art style work with any style of story?

>Is there such a thing as an "inappropriate art style" for the type of story you're telling?
No, in fact I think it is often encouraged by their peers to challenge themselves with telling dark stories with whimsical or comedic art styles.

>Is there such a thing as an "inappropriate art style" for the type of story you're telling?
Yes, it's called "Off the Menu". Thought it was going to be wacky R&S-styled slapstick, but it's Drunk History with food... and none of the drunkness.

That was such a nothing comic

It's important but flexible. Your first example is not appropriate but your hypothetical fantasy comic sounds like it'd be an interesting combination of art and story

Derf's art is weird but its not like he's squeezing or stretching the characters and making them act like cartoons. He's a reasonably competent illustrator and he preferred to draw it himself rather than risk some other guy fucking up his vision. I get that maybe his stylized bodies aren't your cup of tea, but nothing about it is inappropriate for the gravity of the story he was telling

Styles may come to have associations with appropriate stories but there's nothing stopping you or anyone else from experimenting. Sometimes a work sticks out because of the clash. Thinking of style as a metric for appropriateness is a bit of a trap if you aren't careful. A follow up question may be what do intentional stylistic choices serve in a story.

If Ed, Edd, n Eddy were all moeblobs would it still be Ed, Edd, n Eddy?

No, then it would be Nichijou with more scamming.

The only wrong art style is an unbearably ugly one

I think it made sense here, the art helped show how Jeff's "friends" saw him as just an odd ball and ignored the warning signs.
If you did the story in realistic or tonally fitting art it would be post-hoc, we know the seriousness of how his neglect affected him from hindsight, but no one did then. Poor way to tell a story, like those people in interviews who assure you they always knew someone was a bad seed but correlate things after the fact as evidence.

The art for the Slaughterhouse-Five and 1984 comics are so ill-fitting.

I wouldn't say anything is inappropriate but some are probably gonna give you more of an uphill battle than others.

Art should always be good.
