With an official animated version by Jerry Bruckheimer coming out in the next few years, and many fan animatics out of it, what's our opinion of EPIC: The Musical?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lun_OMdNi4Q

Neal has the best animatics, followed by Gigi
>>
>>154041338
Tfw Circe hates men but is super hot...
>>
Why does Ody's crew keep pushing him to become a monster, and then get upset when he does and wins? Are they stupid?
>>
>>154041338
It has a very adult Disney feel to it
>>
>>154041713
>Are they stupid?
Yes, nigga, yes. They are idiots. They don't have to make the choices that Ody makes, they just act like spoiled little shits and get mad whenever he does something that won't immediately benefit all of them. He sacrifices six random men to Scylla, and they immediately stage a fucking mutiny despite his method of choosing was the fairest possible (since straight up telling them six men would die would guarantee infighting). The only real mistake Ody made was boasting to Polyphemus, which was an incredibly idiotic thing to do, but considering he had no way of knowing that the cyclops was related to Poseidon it hardly seems fair to blame Odysseus for the ensuing carnage.
>>
So is the moral of the story to not have mercy and kill?
>>
>>154041338
It would be hilarious if all the animatics got copyright strikes when the movie becomes an actual thing, wouldn’t surprise me if their legal team also tried to go after any other odyssey adaptation on the internet just because they could
>>
>>154043568
Puerto Rico is a very brutal place anon
>>
>>154043568
I can imagine critics calling epic a pro trump movie because trump himself would unironically say Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves
>>
>>154043659
Doesn't Disney own Hamilton? And that has a ton of storyboards. I would imagine whatever company gets the rights would be smart enough to avoid an Undertale-style copyright controversy

But they're companies so you never know. A fucking lego company destroyed their entire image for 200k.
>>
>>154043568
The moral of the story is "do what you have to for love".

This isn't even a musical, it's a concept album. For it to be a musical it has to be a stage play with an actual script, not just music

That’s the title
>>
>>154044025
Who cares what the title is? A "musical" is a stage play that has musical NUMBERS in between the spoken sections. Hell, this is closer to the opera of old, are we calling it an opera? Closer to Wagner than Broadway

>>
>>154053829
Poseidon is a direct son of chronos though, alongside Zeus, which puts him on a completely different power level than the next generation of gods. Aphrodite and Ares don’t match up to them and the only reason Diomedes managed to hit them was because Athena was directly helping him (and the musical does not canonically confirm if Odysseus had any gods helping him). There were a few instances where Hercules fought them but that was fucking Hercules, he was the exception to every rule.

Liked it a lot.
Cried like a bitch at the end. I think the repeating musical motiffs are a cool way to stablish themes and concepts. Like how Penelope's theme plays briefly when Ody is being seduced by circe. Likewise, i expected it to be pure tumblr estrogen stuff. But the middle act and end really proved my wrong. With all Ody had to sacrifice and how he had to get ruthless. Overall wonderful experience and i look forward to the professionally animated version, even if i'm really satisfied with the cut i saw.
>>
It's impressive this didn't end with a "Penelope moved on/doesn't recognize Ody as her husband anymore/can't forgive him/etc" ending that had to have taken restraint

The whole conflict between Odysseus and Eurylochus with the mutiny is even worse when you realize they aren’t just friends: Eurylochus was married to Ody’s sister, so him just giving up on going home is disrespecting his captains own sister too.
Hard to feel bad for his line “But we’ll die.” When he brought it on himself with that shit.

I recently read an old illustrated version of The Odyssey that tried to be accessible to young readers but still touch on a lot of it. Then I got into watching Epic animatics.

I do like some of the story choices Epic makes converting The Odyssey into a musical, it does a pretty good job taking Odysseus’s war traumas and picking that as a major focus and motivator. But then there’s whole chapters that I had really liked in the written version that the musical just skips.

In the first couple of sagas it leaves this impression that they’re gonna have a song focusing on all kinds of relatively minor scenes that a lot of abridgments and adaptations wouldn’t include, but that peters out by the last sagas. And it’s a little disappointing.

Same with the rest of the crew. I adore the animatics that show the crew getting upset at Odysseus, like he's somehow in the wrong choosing himself over the assholes who mutinied against their captain and king, who's primary plan seemed to be "sail around aimlessly until we die since going home is impossible".

And the fanbase keeps saying Calypso is the worst villain of all, worse than white Zeus. But obviously, it's because she's black in the canon animations. It's an odd oxymoron. One side wants to be victims for blacks. The otherside outright hates blacks. You can't win
>>
I'd say in the adaption, keep the original singers, but they all have to be white in the visuals. Make one of the antagonists blonde, and not just all have black hair

Calypso can be black but only because of Pirates of the Caribbean, the reference makes it OK

The creator of this (Jorge) gives off youth pastor vibes in all his TikTok videos. I don’t buy that someone who would make a musical where the mc commits infanticide in the second song could actually be this wholesome

>>
>>154046970
Ironic considering superheroes are inspired by greek gods and western mythos in general. You're basically mad at greek gods for looking like how greeks imagined greeks god to look like lmfao
>>
>>154059382
I remember during the lead-up to the Ithaca saga's release there was genuine concern the story would end that way. There were a lot of people arguing that the story would benefit from Penelope not taking Odysseus back, that the Odyssey was best served as a straight tragedy to emphasize the cost of Odysseus becoming a monster and that the cost of returning home was to lose everyone and everything. They also argued that Odysseus was probably going to accidentally kill Telemachus during his slaughter of the suitors, thus adding to his wife coming to hate him.
I am very, very glad Jorge went with the straightforward happy ending. Foregoing another shitty subversion and instead ending the story with "I love you" was a genuine breath of fresh air.
>>
>Penelope was the daughter of a Spartan king and a naiad
Suddenly 108 dudes willing to wait years to try and marry her makes sense, they all want spartan muscle mommy.
>>
>>154054232
Yeah I didn’t really like that part of the musical. I have a hard time believing that a dude that spent some of his formative years in his father’s stomach would say uncle after getting stabbed for like two minutes by a guy that was already half dead.
>>
>>154064216
You don't have to be a pedophile to reuse elements of murder from the source material they are adapting
>>
>>154066124
It kind off make sense since the gods are basically children with no leash. They have never been told no before and believe no one stop them.
>>
>>154066124
I mean there's zero basis for it but I always liked to imagine that moment is when Hades decides to help. I hadn't watched any of the animatics for 600 Strike when I first listened to it so I wasn't aware of the whole "power of anime wind bag jetpack" thing, I thought the chorus was literally the souls of the 600 men coming to help Ody kick Poseidon's ass, empowered by Hades in retribution for the whole "I'll drown all of Ithaca" threat (and because helping a mortal beat the shit out of your sibling is funny).
>>
>>154068885

Did Wringers as we know them in a modern sense exist in the Bronze Age? Would that figure of speech even make sense in that time?
>>
>>154072394
This is easily my favorite interpretation of Penelope. While almost all the animatics do well with her (outside that one animator who made Penelope fat with vitiligo for some unfathomable reason), having Penelope both show her age AND reflect her Spartan upbringing with defined musculature is perfect. She is visibly equal parts strong and graceful, and I can absolutely see why Odysseus would spend twenty years trying to get back to her.

I'm planning on derailing nolan odyssey /tv/ threads when the movie comes out with Epic references in order to steer the conversation towards it.

There's also this "odyssey inspired" (yeah right, Epic totally didn't influence this or anything) game coming out, which would you could make a couple /v/ threads about I guess, or just make more threads about greek mythology games in general and use it as a platform to discuss Epic.

She would 100% iron brand your dick off and use you as a footstool for her lesbian nymph harem, but it'd be worth it.

Unless your name is Odysseus, son of Laertes, I don't recommend it.

Biggest issue is trying to trim the fat, I don't know how they're going to do that. The longest animated musical ever is only 1 hour 20 minute, and this is a 2 hour 20 minute production. Sure there are superfluous songs but enough to trim it to 80 minutes? It'd be rough.

In non-homeric tradition, Odysseus is actually the son of Sisyphus
yeah, that nigga

>non-homeric tradition
Considering non-Homeric traditions paint Penelope like a whore who ends up marrying Odysseus and Calypso's bastard child, I tend to not pay much attention to it.

No. He's even in the play Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus. His name means 'strength' and he's one of Zeus' enforcers alongside his sister Bia ('force').

No one tell them he fucked both Calypso and Circe in the original.

Cyclops was probably inspired by finding the fossils of prehistoric animals. The supposed remains of Ceto the sea monster that Perseus slayed were apparently discovered and kept on display, almost certainly some dinosaur fossil. A lot of their monsters were combinations of existing creatures they were familiar with and could imagine. Centaurs were probably inspired by horse-mounted steppe warrios. They did also have visual depictions with sculpture, mosaic and vase paintings.

feels weird to see a muscial for a story I actually remember and enjoy quite well. Odysseus finally arriving back and saving his family from the suitors was always my favorite part.

Typhon had the most metal description, makes you wonder if the greeks could even comprehend what that would look like

I wonder if the poets were inspired by visions they had via dreams. I certainly would not come up with a design like that.

I like how a lot of the dangers odysseus and his crew meet (lotus food, circe, sirens) are all about vapid pleasures halting your progression and achieving your actual goals. A tale as old as time
