It mainly comes through with Manny starting over with a new family and them actually allowing this change, unlike what other franchises do where everyone's marketably safe from aging or dynamics changing (I think Brad Bird said for instance Incredibles will never age? So now no one cares about Incredibles 3 even moreso than after the disappointment of 2.)The others progress a bit too. Diego tries to mesh with the herd but in movie 3 he feels he's losing his edge and doesn't think he should be involved with Manny's family life. He leaves but ultimately comes back. Like with everyone else, he eventually gets a love interest but it remains to be seen if she'll be in this one. Last they were seen they considered kids themselves iirc. Sid, being alone and wanting to stick with Manny in movie 1, was shown in both 2 and 3 as wanting to be with kids and be a dependable person. In 2 he tries to run a daycare and in 3 he adopts the dinosaur kids and argues with the mother about being their parent. His family who abandoned him cameo'd in 4, leaving the granny with him, and he got a girlfriend in movie 5.It's not about anything deep happening, it's just good continuity that helps the characters feel worthwhile.
