They are the protagonist. Even when they do evil things, there's a reason for it that actually makes it good. Hitler? He undoubtedly thought he was doing good things. So did Stalin, so did Mao. Even if it was for an abstract utopian tomorrow that never comes, they still thought ultimately they were doing good.Azula? She KNOWS she is a monster. She isn't, she's a person. She's not a sociopath as she very much both has and demonstrates a wide variety of feelings and always appropriately and even has empathy and understanding. She uses them to exploit people, but she has to have them and understand them to exploit it. So we have a young girl that is acting out the role she has been assigned, she IS a monster, she must do monstrous things because that is who she is, who she has made herself to be. And as the realization of what that means closes is on her, she can't handle it, breaks down, and desperately tries to revert to it later on. Because that is the identity she has internalized. And its the one the world keeps hammering her down with. She's amazing as a character. I think she's leagues above the others, whether it was intentional or by accident, I think it's one of the few characters that can be dissected very heavily and produce interesting conclusions.
She isn't perfect, she's incredibly far from it and that's what makes her great.
Of all the characters in ATLA, her path to redemption is probably the only one that would actually necessitate healing. Mai, Zuko and Ty Lee are all some degree of either trying to fulfill some ideal they already had but needed to reevaluate or following along. For Azula her path would have to be something that ends with her turning into a person and not the monster she thought she was. It wouldn't be grand and impressive, no prophecy to fulfill, no great throne to sit upon. She needs to realize she's just a little girl who thought she was something else. It's fantastic.
