My main issue with this show was that it wasn't dark enough. Even the characters who commit digital seppuku still "live" on with an animal-like consciousness. None of the meatspace counterparts of the Circus residents are dead, no one struggles with drug addiction, no one has intentionally committed murder or rape or been into real bad shit. Hell, they could have had a character twist that they were a former nurse who accidentally cut a recoverable patient off of life support and killed them. Or a chronic public masturbator. Goose had the chance to make the backstories really sad, dark, and weird, and she didn't. I felt a little ripped off.

I don't think it's unreasonable though to have people that aren't your family cut you off and ignore you in order to give yourself some form of room.Like even in a healthy relationship you need your own space and time sometimes, severing off the others like Jax did is one of the more healthy choices he could have done, in that there was no physical or emotional abuse. Psychological abuse is debatable but even then it's a stretch to say that much. They literally have several large areas and locations they can each go to, yet (As Caine mentions) they never go to any of them. We have people that abstracted who were there when Ribbit and Jax had their falling out that could have been reasons to talk about. If they all abstracted before the falling out, Ragatha would easily have a much larger reason to worry about Ribbit and try to hang out with her. If we didn't, then there's a large amount of possibility for Ribbit to actually have more nuance and interaction as a character between more cast members. My point is, though, that neither Jax nor Ribbit seemed to be in any good headspace to be friends at that point in time if this is what pushed her over the edge and nobody really can say whether or not it's for better or worse because despite it being one of the healthiest ways to push her away in that he only put up a new boundary, she herself felt hurt and isolated in a situation that he couldn't control. At least in my opinion, since we never see anything that implies Jax is friends with any of the remaining abstracted members

The issues Jax and Ragatha have with their mothers are completely different. As far as we know, Ragatha’s mother was just a terrible person all the time; Ragatha doesn’t seem to have a single positive memory of her. So, even though she’s obviously traumatized by the way her mother treated her, her feelings toward her aren’t that complicated. Jax’s mother, on the other hand, apparently had been decent until her husband abandoned her and Jax, and from then on she entered a strange cycle of abuse with Jax where she abuses him only to later show him love again, almost as if she wanted Jax to take on his father’s role in the household but at the same time resenting the fact that Jax doesn’t resemble his father, which obviously makes Jax’s feelings toward her much more complicated, not to mention that Jax also fears he might have killed her.
