At the same time the Runaways were on the west coast trying to deal with their supervillain parents the mutant population had exploded. Many of these mutants were kids and teenagers and so Xavier decided to open up the mansion as a school once more and tasked former New Mutant Dani Moonstar to help find and teach the next generation of mutants.Today will be New Mutants #1-4.Previous >>154101697
Kind of funny that this comic was canceled and then relaunched as Academy X, which ended up being much more popular
>>154117477bumping, gonna read it when I get home from work
Issue 2
>>154117691Kind of false. It was a lower selling X-title but it was consistently in the mid-30,000s or so per issue. Some times a few thousand lower, some times a few thousand higher but rarely ever making it out of the 30k range. Academy X under DeFillipis and Weir and the Yost/Kyle run all have similar numbers. Marvel promoted the Yost/Kyle stuff more and tied it into crossovers more so it had more visibility but the sales, aside from crossover bumps, are fairly consistent. The narrative that the book was somehow floundering until the post-HoM retool made it more popular doesn't really jibe with the actual sales figures and I get the impressio that while this was was a very Jemasy book (like Runaways), it wasn't something Quesada liked so he allowed a false narrative to spin up around it to justify retooling it to something he did like.Sort of like the narrative that Avengers was failing prior to Bendis. For the hell of it, looking at 2002 as a random year, Avengers was doing around 55-60k per issue which at that time was enough to still make it a top 10 or top 20 book. It was mostly being outsold by the Ultimate stuff and the main X-Men books and was outselling Batman (Batman's sales were saved by Hush).New Mutants/Academy X also outsold Runaways pretty handily but it wasn't the critical darlin Runaways was so it got written off as a failure in need of a retool while Runaways kept gettig chance after chance. Interesting aside, the idea to relaunch the book from New Mutants to Academy X must have been a late thing because there's advertising for what seems to be Academy X #1 as New Mutants #14.
Laurie was my waifu when I was in school. The pretty but shy girl who just needed someone to see how great she was hit teenage me like crack in the same way troubled handsome bad boys hit girls.
Issue 3
Pretty sure that's Rockslide's first appearance in that last panel.
Issue 4

All of this is in reference to the Mechanix miniseries where Kitty and Shan were roommates and there was clear ship teasing between them (being Claremont and all) but this sunk that.Of course now Kitty's gay while Shan is stuck with some nobody Krakoa era OC nobody cares about or knows because Shan must always suffer.
>>154119007Speaking of the old New Mutants, it's kind of weird how Magma is portrayed all the time as this old valued friend when she was only there for about 4 years IRL before leaving. The Allison Crestmere thing was in the early '90s in New Warriors, but really ouside of the occasional guest appearance every few years she didn't properly join back up with the X-Men/New Mutants as a full time thing until near the end of the DeFilippis and Weir run and their plans for her died because of them getting replaced.Kind of weird how of all the classic New Mutants characters she's the one seemingly nobody ever wants to use. I wonder if a lot of writers just found the whole Nova Roma thing to be too stupid/lame to want to bother with the character.
>>154119181>I wonder if a lot of writers just found the whole Nova Roma thing to be too stupid/lame to want to bother with the character.probably the only other thing noteworthy about her is her relation to Selene
>>154118115>Chuck's walking aroundTerrible sign from the outset. I have to remind myself this is 2ish years before Deadly Genesis really did him in for good.
That finishes things up for today. As I said previously, I'm going to be alterating between Runaways and New Mutants for a bit until both series are done so next time it's back to L.A. for Runaways #6-10.
>>154119283Even then it doesn't really get used much. More people have spent more time trying to make Cypher cool than doing anything with Magma.
>>154117977>Second issue cover is just straight up Dani nakedGod bless em 13 year old me appreciated it
>>154119067Thank god we have enough people slinging slurs
>>154120124I like the Joshua Middleton coves but they definitely don't have anything to do with the issues. At least you'll get to see him drawing trashy chicks when I get to NYX.
>>154120201>but they definitely don't have anything to do with the issuesOh man Marvel was real bad about this in the early to late 2000's though I kinda miss the artsy fartsy covers
>>154120124Holy fuck I just noticed too, you can see some nipple.
>>154120256That was, I assume, another Jemas edict. Pobably because he thought traditional covers were lame and pin-up style covers sold a book better. DC kept more traditional style covers with word balloons and shit until well into the 2000s. I remember seeing people on some forums, especially SA's comics forum, hating them because they were "corny" and shit. There are a lot of tastemaker type fans and journos who fully bought into and pushed the "comics were lame before Marvel in the 2000s made them cool again" line and lapped up creators like Bendis because of it.
>>154118806shoulda killed him like wolverine did that one kid in ultimate xmen
>>154119430ty op
>>154121741>he thought traditional covers were lameThey are.
