He had most of them killed off or sent into retirement in Zero Hour right after their book was cancelled too.Ironically it was Zero Hour that birthed Starman which used a lot of Golden Age characters and lead to the 1999 JSA book. It's basically doomed to not having much or any character introspection and development due to the aforementioned characters having their own solos, and DC treats their C listers like crap due to not being Batman so they won't get development/introspection there either.Also JSA simply has a better track record.They're okay to great from the All Star Comics relaunch in 1976 all the way to Johns' departure in 2009, and Earth 2 was a terrible idea with okay execution while Robinson was on it before it went down the toilet when that editor pissed him off and ended up filling the book with Batman and Superman characters. Meanwhile silver age JLA is some of the worst silver age DC stuff and Bronze Age JLA is technically readable with the first half of it basically being an extension of the silver age JLA. Detroit was terrible. JLI is of course one of the best JL runs. Then in the 90s they had some shitty shit like JL Europe, Extreme Justice, and post Zero Hour. Then of course Morrison's is good though mostly spectacle, and the rest of that volume was pretty decent even if it did have some terrible effects (eg Tower of Babel's influence). Meltzer and McDuffie were fine even if Identity Crisis' ugly head reared over it, and JL and most of its spinoffs (United, Dark, etc) has been outright shit ever since McDuffie left. And Johns' third JSA run and Lemire's run are mediocre at best but it's still somehow better than whatever the fuck Snyder's run and Unlimited are.

The JSA existing and being prominent connects the modern DCU to its origins in a visible and tangible way and helps give DC its own identity. Marvel's innovation in the Silver Age was making its characters have more human foibles in the here and now but it's connection to its pre-Fantastic Four era has always been more tenuous even with things like Invaders (a Bronze Age creation).DC's sense of legacy and that thread connecting the JSA heroes of the past to the JLA heroes of the present and the Teen Titans heroes of the immediate future and the Legion of the far future is what was cool about DC. Marvel was the modern soap opera while DC was an ages spanning historical epic and shitting on, downplaying or eliminating the JSA is like ripping the soul out of the entire company. You're directly damaging the building's foundation.

That you're being exposed to hidden mysteries you weren't supposed to know about that go against the "official" narrative of the Marvel Age starting with the FF. By shifting it from Truman and Eisenhower era characters to fucking Aero and Luna Snow and Amadeus Cho you've defeated the team's entire purpose and appeal.
