The lack of Justin Roiland is painfully obvious too, it feels awkward when they imitate him, both his voices and the style of humor. But I'm still watching it. Occasionally there's a genuinely cool episode and the average ones are still entertaining enough.

What if he just didn't walk forward and fixed it with science?" That's enough material for a 2 minute gag that was stretched out into an entire boring episode.Take Roy for example. The original Roy gag was about a minute long, from Morty putting on the helmet until dying. It worked because it was a funny idea, perfectly timed. Now imagine what Season 9 Rick and Morty would do with the same concept. The episode would open with Morty as Roy, and we'd spend 20 boring minutes watching Roy's life. Then the last 30 seconds would be the game over screen and Morty taking off the helmet. The concept would overstay its welcome. And the stinger wouldn't even be Rick's run of Roy going off the grid, but Morty mournfully staring out the window of the ship while sad music plays.

I like to think him joining the crew when he did brought about the closest thing to Harmon and Roiland's back-and-forth that initially made the show what it was. Though at the end of the day, Schrab IS still reporting to Harmon since it's the latter's show...

I got sick with COVID few years back, and since the two week thing was still in place, I just watched Rick and Morty again from the beginning after not watching post-S3Was it S4 where it got a massive bump in production? I remember starting a new season and weirdly being Wow'd by how much better it looked, yet the episode was all about how Morty is a creepy loser and shouldn't pursue a hot girl. It was all about being sad and dealing with emotions.Then I saw another episode where Rick was fucking with this guy's peace time toilet, and the episode ended being emotional/sad.I know the weird "emotional" bits were always in the DNA of Rick and Morty, but it felt like they just wanted to make a show where every episode is the one where Rick tries to kill himself after fumbling the hivemind.
