>therapy speak disguised as children's media
is this all it takes to make a successful cartoon?
>>
>>154140854
why do people always just use buzzwords as criticism?
>>
>>154140854
Yes. You can give credit to Rebecca Sugar for that.
>>
>>154140869
Was Steven Universe the first show to start doing that? Surely this kind of dialogue existed before 2013.

people saying their feelings out lout predated cartoons, movies, or moving pictures

Obviously it took more and their model has been tried and true over the years.

The model where merch sales fund each episode individually is a real good one, as well as the public pilot. You watch for free and pitch in if you like it, which is a lot less of a barrier than committing to a sub. They went in on TADC's full show knowing people liked it and that they liked it a lot, and that it meant they were financially secure for the next couple years as long as they didn't go over budget. And If you've seen their pipeline presentation or making ofs you know they're very focused on controlling their budget.

At the same time they've done some really creative stuff with their limited means. Their creator-focused approach has been very good at producing shows with distinctive looks. You can recognize TADC or Murder Drones or Gaslight from a mile away.

Releasing an episode every couple month, even though it's also really due to budget constraints, allows the hype and discussion to build up. Just look at Among Us, a show that'll soon be forgotten by /co/ but despite being kinda average would have kept the board aflame with speculation as to who the killer is for more than two months had they just released one episode per week.

None of those choices are incredibly clever, but it's impressive to see how many companies just forget about them, bland shows released in one dump, with no merch or business plan at the ready

>animation and the arts are only a viable career path for the upper middle class
>stories need conflict
>the only conflict the upper middle class know in their comfy lives is petty personal """trauma"""

so now half of animation is about overcoming your parent's disapproval of you coming out as non-binary.

>>154140854
Imma be real with you OP. The world is pretty fucked up right now and a lot of younger people feel (correctly) like they have no future and nothing to look forward to. And often the adults in their lives are so wrapped up in their own problems that no one has ever taken the time to talk to them about managing their emotions. So they vicariously learn about it second hand through the internet and entertainment. The new generations are baaically being raised by the internet moreso than even the boomers were raised by TV.
>>
>>154143131
Oh wait I forgot to relate that to why. So yeah because the younger people who consume entertainment like TADC have never had positive role models or adults to talk to them about how to handle emotions and trauma they instead glomp in to any show that even remotely touches on these issues.

Trans issues aside, if you examine TADC at its core its a show that mirrors life itself. The characters much like the audience find themselves wayward and trapped in a nightmarish carnival managed by an insane out of touch overlord that while meaning well makes their life a hell by not offering them any meaning to their existence.
>>
>>154140868
A buzzword is literally just a common talking point.
>>
>>154143083
japan is a wealthy safe country and anime doesnt look like this though
>>
It's a cartoon for neurotic queer young adults that only looks like a kids' show because these people are emotionally stunted and this is the aesthetic they like.
>>
>>154144019
But why do they like it? Thats the thread question.
>>
>>154143808
japan is extremely bug brained, there stories also revolve around their middle class conflicts but their problems all revolve around the tireless grind of their work and school culture.

>shounen protagonist grinds the hardest and goes from being last place with the useless power to be #1 strongest of all time.
or the inverse
>loser who wasted his life in the drudgery of japan gets hit by a truck and gets reincarnated to super magic harem land
>>
>>154143808
Japan is 20 years into a wave of anime and related works about dying to escape reality for fantasy worlds where big nerd skills are not useless and looked down upon
>>
>>154144441
>>154145001
I think its really sad that the world sucks so much that even in the 1st world people spend their time daydreaming about being able to escape the drudgery of everyday life. Its like how the characters in TADC are all looking for an exit when all they has to do was make the circus itself worth existing in.
>>
>>154140854
TADC isn't children's media.
>>
>>154142587
This is a big reason why Jojo's Bizarre Adventure became so popular and died so suddenly when it went to Netflix. The weekly releases gave time to build hype. Then they moved to dumping the entire arc at once. People binged it, and the hype was dead in two weeks.

You can just say therapy. I don't day I'm going for a walking feet.
>>
>>154143161
>Trans issues aside
Huh?
>>
>>154145442
People get so wrapped up in Goose being trans and the whole "WHO'S THE TRANS ALLEGORY?!" that they completely miss all the other stuff. People are so concerned about whether Jax is trans or not that they forget the ACTUAL takeaway is that pushing people away and hiding behind a bunch of defense mechanisms will only lead you to ruining yourself. If there are people in your life who give a shit; talk to them and let them help you.
>>
>>154140854
Those are the low points of every episode. The last episode is all therapy speak.
>>
>>154140854
Troon/Wokescum/Leftist Magnet to attract children.
Same logic in Mascot horror.
>>
>>154146953
Sometimes I think people on /co/ would have had more fun with this series if it was just a straight up creepypasta horror series where each person abstracts every episode, leaving Pomni alone in the circus to slowly go insane (But NOT for psychological reasons! Because the abstracted eat her flesh or something. No emotions except for joy and fear!)
>>
>>154146967
Content farms be like:
>>
So what makes TADC to you guys therapy speak?
Is it because of how it’s the mundane that tips characters like Jax over the edge instead of leaning into the established concepts of the world as the push? Or is there too much of a connection between the mundane and the circus that is the issue?
Or how can existential horror exist without leaning into these kind of things at all and still tell a story?
>>
>>154147012
These things can be expressed without carving out moments out of the action comedy scenario the pilot presented. The show feels like it stops where they are in a quiet spot away from everything while the character trauma dumps.
>>
>>154141882
Yes.
The average tadc viewer would not handle pic related, which is the same premise and twist

Hell they wouldnt be able to handle i have no mouth and I must scream either

Meanwhile tadc has loud colorful childiah eye candy and feels, with mild tension jumps care and panic moments to "feel" mature

I like this shiw but let's not act like its something Uber mature or anything like that

>NO ITS NOT FOR KIDS!! SO WHAT IS IT HAS LOLSORANDUM HUMOR AND BARRLY ANY PLOT
>IT. IS. MATURE ART
>>
>>154147086
Honestly, this is why the first two episodes should be treated as a two-parter. The point is that Caine never actually GIVES them the space to figure shit out and most of them had just given up on trying to process any of those feelings. I will criticize that Pomni was somehow magically the first person to arrive on the "Maybe if we just talk things out, we can deal with how bad things are" solution to keep people from Abstracting. Like, I can handwave away the original batch of people being too panicked and weirded out by the situation to have figured that out. But Ragatha seems to have implied that Kinger didn't used to be full on crazy. HE never figured out that just being there for people kept them from going nuts?
