every time i watched ed edd and eddy i always found it hard to see double d as not a girl, since the way the moves and talks is so feminine. what's yours?
>>
>>154142469
I was never that stupid so no one really.
>>
>>154142469
Only happened to me with Nermal and Pepper Ann's sister
>>

>i always found it hard to see double d as not a girl

Are you gay or just stupid?
>>
>>154142510
i'm definitely not gay
>>
>>154142469
I thought Rabbit and Piglet were girls when I was little.

Also my mom's biggest memory of watching spongebob with me as a kid is only realising Sandy is a girl at the same moment Patrick did.
>>
>>154142529
>has feminine eyelashes
>wears a flower
>has a female voice
>sandy is a female name
>regularly referred to as 'she'
How?
>>
>>154142469
I need a headcount how many of you watched Rocky and Bulkwinke and immediately knew Rocky was a guy
>>
>>154142539
tbf She doesn't know herself how it didn't register until that moment, and being a kid at the time I don't have any great insight into her thought process. My only guess is that might have been the first episode she saw with Sandy so only saw her in her suit up until that point and mentally clocked it as a "boys show" so didn't really think about it until it was explicitly mentioned.
>>
>>154142469
I guess I still have trouble seeing Blue from Blue's Clues as a girl dog.
>>
>>154142469
I think you're just retarded.
>>
>>154142539
>sandy is a female name
It's unisex going at least as far back as the 19th century
>>
>>154142507
The thing with those is that with those types of characters I could always already tell right away that they were just meant to be very feminine/masculine.
Like, I never thought "oh that's a girl", just "oh, he's a fag"
>>
>>154142469
Guy in the picture is being disingenuous on purpose. Nothing in Buttercup indicated she was a boy.
Powerpuff GIRLS, wears a dress, has a feminine haircut, has a girl's voice.
You saying that double d was a girl makes no sense too, that's either disingenuity or a total lack of perception

Here's an character who's gender is intentionally misleading

This Jett. The rival to the main character of Goat, a movie about a young male goat trying to become a pro basketball player. Jett is the star player of the movie's best basketball team which the mc is trying to join. Jett is a girl.

It's obvious that what they were trying to do with the panther, subvert gender expectations not just with what female furry characters are supposed to look like but also with the idea of basketball being a male dominated sport

I'm not sure it worked. The movie didn't do all that well so most people who see this character will just assume it's a male. Hell, if this thread is any indication I bet a fairly large portion of the kids who did watch will probably think she's a boy despite being voiced by Gabrielle Union.

Kids are stupid.
>>
>>154143093
>I have legitimately never understood this one.
I hear her being addressed as a girl, I know she's a girl, but she's boy colored and not girl colored. Magenta? Totally a girl.
Blue is a boy color. Simple as.
>>
>>154142895
I also thought child Noodle was a boy
>>
>>154143278
I hold the same opinion about Bluey.

Blue is a boy color dammit.
>>
I genuinely think making these types of mistakes should be considered an early sign of low intelligence or attention span. I never had this problem because I actually paid attention to the cartoons I watched. I listened and used context clues if I ever was confused.
The fact that it’s apparently a really common and shared experience to mistake characters like Buttercup and Blue and Double D as the opposite gender is endlessly baffling to me given how often all of these shows disprove that multiple times per episode through dialogue alone.
>>

Tigress from Kung Fu Panda is obviously female without her design falling into stereotypes, so it’s not impossible to make a female feline character look female in a non traditional way.

>Thought Tweety Bird was a girl (again, eyelashes + voice)
>Thought Terk from Tarzan was a boy for literal years
>
>>
>>154143540
Not traditionally feminie but I would clock the voice as falling into that same category as Freiza's voice of not being hard to hear as sounding like an older womans. With Rabbit as well it doesn't help his personality traits of being fussy and ettiquette minded, usually busy working on his home and garden, and the one Pooh goes to to get food register as more feminine traits to a child audience whose mental comparison is probably going to be their mothers. All on top of the figure not helping with the wide hips and the slight tuff around the chest area, the ears also flop behind head often which is usally used to give the effect of long hair with other cartoon rabbits and green is a nuetral color in gender association.
>>

>>
>>154143267
Some threads before the trailers dropped said she was supposed to be male but that got changed at some point. Regardless, i doubt any kid who watches the movie will think she's a man, the movie makes it clear enough.
>>

>>
>>154143193
Nermal is different in that you have to be outright told he is not a girl repeatedly.

Give the character eyelashes, which is cartoon shorthand for girl character then hire the most feminine voice actress ever. What are people supposed to think?
>>
>>154148620
>i doubt any kid who watches the movie will think she's a man, the movie makes it clear enough.

90% of this thread is filled with examples of characters who's genders were made explicitly clear but somehow flew over the heads of these Einsteins.

This generation of kids are all dumber than that.
>>
>>154143267
Im i like some special case because for i can see this is supposed to be a very buff woman just by looking at it, the face makes it obvious
>>
>>154147987
Is that even true? This reads like something retarded royals were doing, instead of a being a staple in popular culture.
>>
>>154149180
Literally only rich people could afford color back then. Most working class people wore drab, brown and black clothing while rich people adorned themselves in fancy colors
>>
>>154149223
Not true. The poor weren't wearing a vibrant rainbow but throughout history there has been plenty of access to different cheap dyes. Onion dye was an efficient use of the skins that would otherwise be thrown out and could give you red and yellows. Woad grows everywere and gets you blue. If you look at actual art of peasants from medeival times they are frequently dressed in blues and reds. The notion the peasants didn't have color comes just from our pop culture obsession with depicting those ages as dark, gritty, dirty, and miserable. Which not saying it wasn't on the whole but it wasn't from lack of access to dye.

>>154149180
It is, in fact, true. The shift in color choices didn't seem to have until around the 30s or 40s.
>>154148671
No. My point is that it doesn't matter which color is applied to girls and which applies to boys because culture have been deeply inconsistent about the concept to begin with.
>>
>>154142469
Numerous animal crossing characters
>>
>>154149453
I was under the impression that blue dye originally came from ground up lapis lazuli? Is the woad blue dyes a different shade from that lapis lazuli based ones?
>>
>>154149650
Blue is for boys and pink for girls, anon. It's what it is now and it's what matters now. Colors changing their associated genders doesn't mean we got to ignore the concept as a whole.

It depends on how it is prepped. Using Lapis Lazuli does however tend to give a very deep vibrant blue, while woad tend to be a lighter more pastel blue. Within asia the Indigo plant was more commonly used for blues which likewise gives a deeper color, indigo being brought over to the west is part of what started the decline of farming woad as a major industry in europe.

This one makes sense because Nermal is constantly bragging about how he's cute and how people love him because he's so cute, and he's always trying to do cute things, and he's got big long eyelashes, and also he's voiced in the cartoon by someone who sounds a lot like a girl for some reason.
