Previously on New Mutants, Xavier had tasked Dani Moonstar with recruiting students for the school. She brought in Venezuelan immigrant Sofia Mantega, troubled boy with a death touch Kevin Ford and bookish David Alleyne. She also paired, as roommates, the outgoing and wind-manipulating Sofia with the withdrawn and pheremone-producing Laurie Collins and Laurie seemed to be developing an attraction to Kevin.Today is New Mutants #5-8.Previous >>154133363
The one consistent thing about DeFilippis and Weir's run on both this and Academy X is the artist iconsistency. If they could get an artist for like three consecutive issues it was a minor miracle.
Issue 6
This was actually supposed to be Kevin's exitt from the book completely. He was originally only there to show things weren't going to go perfectly but the readers liked him so he was eventually brought back.
Issue 7
>>154149961I like Kevin as well so I'm glad he got another shot but I usually am not a fan of creators changing the story at the whims of the audience. I suppose if you don't have a clear endpoint in your head it makes well enough sense, though.
>>154150211I would guess it was a simple enough decision when they decided to do squads and that i would add some easy dramatic tension. I didn't even realize that was the plan until finding an old interview/chat they did on CBR when they were still writing the book so it winds up being fairly seamless.
>>154150235Oh, I should mention that the first panel on page 6 is the first appearance of Match. Kind of amusing how many of the characters from this generation started out as random background extras.
>>154149600>blade not popping out the other sideit just looks like he was giving her a kidney punch
Issue 8
>>154150069Ah remember when being a mutant was an identity modifier and not the end all be all to what you are
>>154150613The modern reddit/social media crowd who have pushed the X-Men being an all encompassing version of being an ethnic or sexual minority fucking hate Josh now for this by the way.
>>154150623>>154150648Man remember when characters especially the teen ones were allowed to be genuine, no excuses assholes so they could grow
>>154150674Remember how Julian actually did grow while walking the line between asshole and jerk with a heart and then since the end of NXM he's been regressed into being a giant irredeemable asshole and mutant supremacist?
>>154150669Which is a shame (see>>154150674) dude had actual character development. What really galls me is that they remembered Prodigy still has some black consciousness/intersectionality so the writers punish him for it like the time he solved a serial killer of black men by letting himself get raped and murdered
>>154150715>like the time he solved a serial killer of black men by letting himself get raped and murderedDo I even want to know? I assume it's from the post-Cuckoa NYX or one of those shitty Infinity comics. Gillen making David gay when his entire fucking story arc was basically centered around his relationship with Nori and handwaving it away as "I realized I liked sucking dick after getting my powers back" is so retarded. And yeah, the current X-Men fanbase is a bunch of kids and LGBT people, most of them white, who despise any of the integrationist co-existence stuff that was integral to the franchise until Cuckoa gave them mutie Wakanda.
That's it for today. When we next go back to New Mutants that will finish off this series but it's back to the West Coast tomorrow for Runaways #11-14.
>>154150669Yeah, this era of X-Men could never happen again due to what the 'mutant' label has become in Marvel. Utopia was bad enough of an idea, but Krakoa ironically killed mutantdom through its proposed salvation.Wish that was touched on more, but with how the fandom views that era, I doubt it will any time soon.
>>154151218House of M did so much damage to the X-Men, arguably more than OMD did to Spider-Man. It fundamentally changed the core concept from being abou the good guys trying to bring about acceptance while fighting off extremists on both sides to a small group of around 200 individuals trying to stop from being wiped out which made them (and the fans) more and more slip into Magneto style extremism (funnily enough, as they've toned Magneto way done) and then they got their Israel and but kept the supremacist ideals. The Inhumans shit also gave the fans a (justified at the time) gigantic persecution complex and their extremism is basically a "never again shall the X-Men be treated like trash" thing.I think there's a lot to criticize about Morrison's run but the I love the status quo of that period and the X-Men haven't felt as dynamic or creative in the 20 years since.
>>154150821>I assume it's from the post-Cuckoa NYX or one of those shitty Infinity comics. No it was a Krakoa comic, X-Factor which was supposed to be about them finding out if certain dead mutants were actually dead before they cloned them. The story takes place around the Hellfire Gala goes like this>David finds out theres a serial killer killing gay black men>Tries to do something about it>Instead of going to a myriad of authorities, kicking down the door or even just bringing a mid grade psychic to force the guy to confess, he instead chooses the most degrading plan which is to let the guy rape and kill him and gives a resurrection order to keep him from retaining memories of it>Then proceeds to do a bunch of bullshit seen in Memento to lead the current iteration of Prodigy to find all the evidence and get the bastard>This all apparently took a YEAR, 365 days between David letting himself get raped and murdered and doing Memento to himself to catch a serial killer>Leah Williams the writer, got a lot of deserved shit online for this storylineLike I get it and appreciate it whenever a Mutant sees something awful and tries to intervene those are my favorite X-stories but they could have done this a million times better. Also you know the real fucked part. The serial killer is based off a real dude, some rich Hollywood prouder who has a lot of queer black men die of mysterious (forced drug overdoses) circumstances around him but of course he's rich and connected so nobody is digging into it. And this dogshit comic is one of the few things bringing that horror to light how fucked is that.
>>154151653>X-FactorLeah Williams is legitimately among the worst writers I've ever seen. I always call her a Gail Simone skinwalker and she fundamentally seems to not understand a single character she writes or how to properly structure a plot or even what a story is beyond a series of events.
>>154151653Making David gay is one of the worst things Gillen ever did.
Reading bump.
>>154149419What does he even eat? Wouldn't the food turn into rot as it touches his tongue?
>>154156503Maybe it's only his skin. The couch decayed where his neck was touching.
>>154149277Doing great work here OP, thanks a lot.Since it's from around the same era, are you going to storytime first arc(s) of X-23 history?I think it would tie nicely to her part in Avengers Academy.
