Comic book horror is totally unscary. We need to fix that.
>>154151639do it
>>154151639Face All Red is one of the best horror comics I ever read. All of Em Caroll's stuff is, really.
>>154151639I think the problem is that most try to do horror by having big scary thing and not lingering idea or concepts that stick with you after the comic ends. Manga horror also has the same thing where all of it is shock or just, "look how scary it'd be if this unkillable monster started killing" Junji Ito being one of the few to actually make a living off of it.
>>154151639has anyone implemented jump scares into a webcomic? I feel like if the site changed at a specific reading point as an intended narrative experience that would scare me
>>154156032lmao
>>154156132This made me apprehensive even as a png, when I can it's a png and it's not moving clearly.
>>154151639I can say the same about horror movies and horror games. You either get aroused by the unknown, or you don't. There's no fixing that outside of lobotomy
>>154154554I heard about that one and gave it a read and, well, I wasn't too impressed. I found The Furry Trap more impactfull in the unerving department, especially pic rel. Face All Red trys to build a looming dread but it's more incomprehensible than anything, while Demonwood is a lot more clearer and sinister. Face All Red has a Doppleganger and a guilty protag, but the buildup of him finding his brothers corpse and it looking back at him is disconnected from the Doppleganger, it's a mess. Demonwood slow rolls in the threat, makes you question if the threat is real due to how absurd it is, then you discover in the last few panels it was real, leaving you nothing but the implication of the worst possible thing imaginable is about to happen, just as outlined. It's looming horror done right and executed alarmingly well.
>>154157103Maybe people are just desensitized. Horror reliese very much on you being afraid and when exposed to enough of the same stimuli you eventually just fry your fear receptors, it's why exposure therapy is so effective at solving phobias
>>154157103>>154157185It's pretty funny really how you sense of feae changes. Amnesia or Outlast do nothing for me, but recently I played Tarkov for the first time and being in the factory map, crawling around and hearing gunshots in the distance or footsteps close by got under my skin somehow.
>>154156132this one really show how scary is not being in control of a situation
>>154151639Read the 60s stuff.
>>154151639You can’t make a scary imageIt can be creepy and unsettling or even gross and graphic, but it will never trigger true fear.So you must mask it (make the viewer imagine the horrors) or back it with psychological fear where the concept invokes the imagination later.
>>154151639>We need to fix that.Yeah, it's called MOVIES you dipshit. Or animation if you're a manchild.
