Yesterday Mary-Jane left again, and Spider-Man got his neck broke but then he got better

I want to know the thought process behind this cover.
>>
Nice guy.
>>
>>
>>
>>154180615
Garth Ennis Spider-Man is still so weird to me
>>
>>
>>
>>
Wait what Spider-Man is this that people like him?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>154180691
The one that can set up Bugs Bunny level tricks.
>>
>>154180525
This is an Ennis fitting artist.
>>154180604
This is not. Ennis needs grimy looking art for his writing.
>>
>>
>>
>>154180691
Obviously the guy is delusional. In reality, the police are shooting at Spidey and orphans are pelting him with rocks as he gets struck by lightning while web slinging away.
>>
>>154180734
>aunt may reacting you posting cringe
>>
>>
>>
This story makes me uncomfortable in a bunch of ways. It's a good one though.
Really looking forward to Tangled Web 14. That's one of my favorites and I've storytimed it on /co/ a couple of times.
>>
>>154180904
>>154180913
I want to say this is the first time we got a retcon about Peter having a "real bully". Flash was a bit of a dick but never really that bad
>>
>>
Who??
>>
>>154180904
>>154180913
I like this guy's subtlety and nuance. You can just about sense the hostility he has towards Peter. Never knowing just how much contempt he has for him.
>>
>>
>>
>>154180957
Not quite /ss/ but definitely in the ballpark. This is stranger danger for sure.
>>
>>154180946
Seeing how much destruction happened, you'd think JJJ would pass up an opportunity to put it on the front page.
>SPIDER-MAN CAUSES MILLIONS IN DESTRUCTION IN DISPUTE WITH FELLOW COSTUMED MENACE
>bill gates
>dick cheney
I don't know if this page aged like wine or milk.
>>
Ugh this story. I choose to not see it as canon cause of course Ennis has to either subtly or unsubtly show that he hates the characters and genre he is writing. And I don't like the retcon at all.
>>
>>
Well nice knowin' ya lady
>>
>>154180957
Just a random woman wanting to get in Peter's pants despite being married kind of sorta with MJ. All she had to do was offer to pay his rent or have him stay with her. When they're broke, they're desperate.
>>
>>
>>154181032
>>154181037
What in the goddamn? Oh Ennis you never fail to make me react in some way that's never exactly positive.
>>
Our first letters page in a while
Though no letters yet
>>

I'm getting real fucking tired of the skinsuit shit.
>>

But it's not Claremont this time
>>
Woah, John McCrea, woah
>>
>>
>>
>>154181134
Erm Peter doesn't drink
>>
>>154181144
These are extenuating circumstances
>>
>>
>>
>>154181064
Tangled Web is such a great concept but I feel like the opening story really doesn't fit the stated theme. This is 100% a 'standard' Spider-Man story about Spider-Man/Peter Parker.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>154181073
How many have we gotten? I remember there was that pair in the Byrne run.
>>
>>
>>
>>154181175

I'm assuming there's a missing page guest written by Raimi here.
>>
>>

It was actually removed from collected editions but if you can find a first printing of the floppy you can see it in all of its antisemetic glory.
>>
>>
>>154181284
Eh that's all I remember. I don't follow these threads too closely as I have my own chronological read through at my own pace. Very far behind this one but I have read through a bunch of 00's era stuff a while ago so I know what happens. I have been tuning in and out until JMS which is were I shall read along for a bit.

So is this a Chapter One thing or what? I remember the original had it as an afterschool thing Pete couldn't get anyone to go with him.
>>
>>
>>154181540
It's supposed to be canon I think but Ennis didn't actually read it. So yeah because of that I ignore it.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>154181540
Ultimate was out by this point so I think Ennis just assumed it was part of a school trip in the main canon too. And of course Marvel doesn't have editors so no one called it out
>>
>>
>>154181634
Between this and the necrosis guy in The Final Adventure, you get the idea that Peter spent a life's worth of luck in not having this kinda thing happen to him.
>>
>>
>>154181634
I hate this retcon.
It shouldn't exist as said previously because it wasn't a school trip. The spider being used to make such an uinteresting villain is not as cool as it being potentially used by...well upcoming status quos shifting, and manhandling the origin like this cheapens it rather than what JMS is about to do because just allowing this random fag who is dumb and evil being able to control spiders because he ate one is lame. Shit should've been cool and not this lame version of body horror. Yeah this is autistic, I know but man I fucking hate Ennis and what he does to Spider-Man. You'd think he would make it cooler since he does kinda show reverence for Peter's personality and supporting cast. But nah, I don't like the spider and origin being used this way.
>>
>>
>>154181759
Foreshadowing anon, perhaps it wasn't luck..... or maybe it was?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>154180691
I mean, last night people were going on TV saying that he wasn't responsible for the bomb.

It kind of feels like the public image has been shifting since the Gathering of Five, but no one is talking about it.
>>
>>154181825
>I could do without death-defying exploits and the colorful villains
Uninteresting. Yet again, a future story will have a different answer that Peter says that I prefer more.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>154181785
It's easy to forget, but understanding and respect are just prerequisites of writing a character well, not the totality. You still need ideas, and you still have to execute them well.
>>
>>
>>
>>154181037
Oh shit, this thing.

I didn't think this thing was till AFTER The Other.
>>
Well that was a story
I didn't care for it too much
>>
>>154181658
So is the implication that he fucked his dad?
>>
>>154181143
The fuck?
>>
This book, however, is very special
It's first on this long ride to be published in September of 2001

So I expect over the next week or so we should various subtle and unsubtle shifts in tone
>>
>>
>>
>>154181981
Heh, just you wait. We've got a "very special" issue coming up soon
>>
>>
>>
>>154181456
This is not the panty shot I ever wanted!
>>
>>
>>154182047
Why must you curse me with this knowledge, Anon?
>>
>>
>>154181907
Yep. I might be a bit unfair as Ennis does have pages like the ones with May that are somewhat nice and in line with the tone of Spider-Man. It's moreso the tone of this villain and how he treats the origin and mythos as something lame when that stuff is as important as the characters. Like reverse Brevoort/Slott where all they care about is the surface level callbacks to shit like the spider-mobile while Ennis only likes the potential drama that ensues with a personality like Peter's or Frank's. I mean one is more important to the story but you gotta know how the batmobile works or what tropes it is known for. You don't necessarily need to know how the tires are pumped and what time of day they are pumped or whatever.
Ennis can be a good writer. I like his Hitman and Punisher stuff when he isn't being cynical.
>>
>>154181471
Everyone start keeping track of this. We'll see if this contridicts Silk later.
>>
>>154182045
This is a good one. Nice to wash the Thousand away with some actually well-executed short story material that Tangled Web is supposed to be about.
>>
>>
>>154181528
Just to be clear, is this the same mass of living spider that had sex with Flash, or are there more than one?
>>
>>154182090
Ugh. If I ever write Spider-Man, I'm cleaning the origin up after getting rid of OMD. Silk can still be a hero but I'm not gonna have her be tied to the origin anymore. Hate this shit. Slott deserves the boot and the axe for needlessly complicating it more and not getting rid of the Thousand. Can't believe they doubled down on it in AF1000 I think.
>>
>>
>>
>>154182140
That comes later and is a different mass of spiders named Ero or Miss Arrow.
>>
>>
>>154182144
How close are we to ASM1000 now? Real close, right?
>>
>>154182138
Jannies....*gulp*....I spot a set of protuberances on those boobas....
AIIIIIEEEEE
>>154182150
Goddamn, remember when comics had backgrounds? Jesus modern Marvel is staffed by underpaid people.
>>
>>154181144
If I was in this comic, I would drink too.
>>
>>154182190
The one coming out next week is #995
>>
>>
>>
>>154182103
It really should've started with this one. It's strong and sets the theme of the book really well.
There wouldn't have been such a misstep in Owsley's day, I tell ya.
>>
>>
>>154181701
I think of that third panel a lot whenever hearing about narcissists like a certain New Yorker
>>
>>154182190
Whoa Magister, spoiling ourselves? Guess it doesn't matter much when it comes to Silk and The Thousand, kek. There's like 5 or 6 issues left. Not much. September is when it comes out. Hopefully sales tank afterwards and Marvel reevaluates their business. Or else a schmuck like me is gonna get to writing and maybe land a job one day there and take over and really show them how to make comics.
>>
>>
>>154181280
I feel bad when pitiful characters are created only to be killed like this. Poor woman wanted to bag a guy to fill that void in her life and between her legs.
>>
>>154181497
>>154181519
I knew about this guy, and I really should've known it was Ennis.
>>
>>
>>154181311
>better change to spider-man
At least you're halfway there.
>>
>>
>>
>>154182265
Jesus. The story is a bit thin. But we keep getting kino panelling like this.
>>
>>154182166
Okay got it.
Really, that's some real supervillain team up potential they are sitting on.
>>
>>154180601
It's kino
>>
>>154181440
What did Ennis take when he was writing this? What did the editor that approved of this take when it was pitched to them?
>>
>>154182285
Meh I think Shathra and Ero or Swarm and Ero would be a better team-up.
>>
>>
>>154182296
Anytime I hear about Axel Alonso he seems like a weird fuck. Though I can't recall why specifically right now.
>>
>>
>>154182283
Roscoe Lee Browne's Kingpin is sorely missed in a story like this.
>>
>>154181981
My favorite Spider-Man story. Which ironically barely even includes the Wall Crawler.
>>
>>
I really wish Marvel would put out a collection of these unconventional one off stories. This, The Commuter, and 4 to 8 others.
>>
And that's that!
Some different flavours tonight
And you lot showed up in a big way, appreciate that a bunch

>>154182330
He's got one silhouette'd panel that's just a picture of him
Almost surprised this book even made it on the list
>>
>>154182327
>>154182337
>>154182380

You know I've never viewed this as Kingpin being generous or honorable with Tom. This whole thing just works out in his favor.

He shows that he doesn't tolerate favor, and keeps his position as a ruthless crime boss who's got a stranglehold on the city.

On the other hand it shows that if you own up to your mistakes, and have stayed loyal for your tenure, then he'll leave your loved ones be.

It forces the guys who work with him to always think twice about their actions if they've got anyone they care about.

Also Fisk needing a pen to type in a phone number is funny.
>>
>>154181825
See this is what JJJ wants.

Thanks Magister, tomorrow we get to start on JMS's run which is pretty neat
>>
>>154182380
>Almost surprised this book even made it on the list
Would you have preferred this thread just be the spider bully guy?
>>
>>154182380
>showed up in a big way
I've got a feeling that might continue for a while longer since next thread is JMS's start of his era.
Basically THE major turning point, filled with kino and sone divisive stories in the first half, and well....for those who know what happens in the 2nd half...we still see the effects to this day.
So yeah I expect more anons to show. Hopefully no schizos, knock on wood.

Imagine having a completely loyal and competent person you can always count on and then killing them because they weren't perfect while you yourself have made plenty of mistakes and were beaten by the same superhero as well as others. Now pic related is a villain I'd work for. That and Cobra Commander. Those health benefits are no joke.
>>
>>154182380
Thanks for storytiming, Magister!
>>
>>154182400
It fits him pretty well. Even though he doesn't show up until the end, it would've been easy to have written him as the honorable mafia don type, but that's never really been him. When it isn't Daredevil or something involving his family, he's pretty damn pragmatic. That's why he's the Kingpin.
>>
>>154182501
I don't know if I'd work for him, but I'll say I'm pretty sure Cobra Commander is my favourite character in the Energon Universe
>>
>>154182535
Exactly. He could've still killed Tom's family, but by that point he knows that enough of his men already know Tom came willingly and if that show of Loyalty isn't met with a modicum of respect in turn then the other guys could start questioning what's the point of it all.

Kingpin needs to be ruthless, but he doesn't have to be a fucking psychopath about it. There's nothing to gain from killing the rest of the family.
>>
>>154182599
Plus there's the dumb kid who drove Tom to the office, bragging about how he's young and invincible even though he fucked up on his own assignment and then is murdered by Tom as punishment for said fuck-up. Humility goes a long way when working for Kingpin.
>>
>>154182501
That's not really an option in Marvel New York, though. You can work for someone else, but he'll get taken down soon and probably have some weird monster thing on the way out.
Kingpin is the McDonald's of crime. It might not be good work, but it will always be there, and likely will not subject you to mad science or turn out to be a cult or something. Tom got 20 years of employment and a family who can live in comfort after his death; that's hard to beat.
>>
>>154182265
This is cool but I feel naturally inclined to see the elevator as moving downward. I think it's how close the final panel is to panel 5 making my eye naturally rotate in a clockwise direction rather than snapping back to the mostly black space on the bottom left.
>>
>>154182501
What the hell is this from?
>>
>>154184476
I forget the name. From what I've heard the guy does indeed contribute in the final battle.
>>
>>154184476
>>154184528
Why do so many anons not use reverse image search and hunt it down? I used Google, clicked the first result and then found a thread that had a poster say it's Dancouga and it's obviously an anime.
I don't get why this is happening more frequently when we have reverse image search tools.
>>

>>154184537
I never cared to remember the name of the series which is why I never named the filename.
>>
>>154184596
I meant the anon who was asking what it was. Not you, the poster of it. Not all anons will have their files named. I understand that. That's why I use the google reverse image search first and then if that and saucenao fail, THEN I post a reply asking for the sauce if I couldn't find it.
Sometimes I download images from here, post a reply with it, and then I use reverse image or Saucenao.

I am surprised no writer ever write about spider that gave Peter power before freaking Ennis
>>
>>154180601
Artist having fun.
>>
>>154184875
Who knows. There might have been a zillion pitches in the past or writers didn't think to touch the origin as they saw it as a perfect story that didn't need meddling.

>>154184875
>>154185077
I'm samefagging but my point is take a look at who is EIC at this time and that may be a clue....

There was some cosmic story where Lord Chaos and Master Order were like, 'Yeah, we arranged for the spider to bite him" but that's it.

>Lord Chaos and Master Order arranged the spider bite
>a bully ate the spider's corpse and it mutated him into a swarm of killer spiders
>the spider was from another dimension and its ghost once tried to forcibly merge with Spidey's soul
>the spider was the emissary of a vague arachnid deity that deployed it to bite Peter, with it getting fucked up by radiation along the way
>the spider bit someone else along with Peter
>the machine split the spider in two (like it once did Peter) and one of the spiders survived, further mutated, and is now secretly prowling the shadowy alleys of NYC, eating criminals
