I like him enough, but archie took him and literally made him better in those early years. He became even more peak later on.
A hero is only as good as his villain. And when that villain is a dual contrast of malevolent and serious to Sonic's smarmyness, it creates a good balance to write stories around. It creates stakes since Robotnik never pulled his punches, and would do horrible things for his dream of a machine society. Modern Eggman on the other hand isn't evil at all, and serves as a friendly antagonist who only fights Sonic out of a hobby than any true hatred. With this dynamic, its hard to write stories around when their is no true danger. Since Eggman will never actually kill someone. He even admits this himself in Sonic X.
