Thoughts on Mercy?
In general I mean, her original TAS version, or any of her later adaptations.
>>
>>154188958
She and Livewire were obviously created by TAS in an attempt to replicate Harley Quinn's success, where Mercy Graves is the female slave of the main villain who pushes buttons and obeys minor commands, but instantly loses a fight to the main character, while Livewire is the colorful wacky girl who can put up a fight, but still loses if things get serious.

Mercy was never going to work, though, because she has no real personality beyond being a professional and being in love with Luther (sometimes). That's how it should be, it makes sense for her to be professional, but Harley Quinn has a silly voice, personality, and costume, and a complicated backstory. I don't even know what Mercy's backstory is, which means it's not interesting at all.
>>
>>154188991
>being in love with Luthor (sometimes)
Has that actually been done with Mercy before Williamson?
>>
I’ve often wondered why Harley Quinn has gone off to skyrocket in popularity over the years and yet Mercy Graves (who was created directly based on the success of Harley) has basically been more or less forgotten.

To this day I don’t have a real good answer except maybe she’s boring.
>>
>>154189028
The TAS version of Mercy is in love with him, and sabotages his romance with Lana Lang.
>>
>>154189054
Somehow I gaslit myself into thinking that they're relationship was platonic and that her only development there was leaving him around the end.
>>
>>154189043
Anon already said, she just wasn't as interesting as Harley, her design was basic, her backstory was nonexistent, and her personality wasn't as bombastic.
She just wasn't as memorable.
>>
>>154188958
I like no nonsense women that can kick ass.

One thing she’s got over Harley Quinn is that she got race swapped to Asian first.
>>
I think she's cool but the idea of Lex "Superman villain" Luthor having a normie bodyguard is weird. Although I like the idea that she's crushing on Clark
>>
>>154189254
They've changed her being a powerless human multiple times.
For example, when she first made it into the comics, she was a blonde Amazon, so she was not just some regular lady.
After Flashpoint reintroduced her as Luthor's general secretary/assistant, they made her a cyborg in Lazarus Planet, that's where the OP image is from.
>>
>>154188958
Wtf I was just thinking about her earlier today after watching a clip of her on youtube
>>
>>154189043
Good character design. It's easy to forget now because WB/DC has decided to do away with it for a full generation, but the jester outfit was toyetic and that kind of iconography is important in marketing.
It's also why Punchline failed to catch on; not really a memorable design.
>>
>>154189254
>Although I like the idea that she's crushing on Clark
This is an awful idea. Her having a crush on Luther to justify how fiercely loyal she is to him is much better. Having her crushing on Clark is character assassination on the level of pic related.
>>
>>154188958
Killing her in DoJ was the first sign for me that movie was a shitshow.

I like her as Lex's bodyguard and would hope she has a crush on Otis

Or Bruce Timm just liked that type of character.

Is Harley REALLY that popular or do they just keep pushing her (especially as a QUEER ICON) because who else do they have?

This.
Loyal subordinate who is secretly in love with their higher up but keeps it professional is always a god tier trope.
>>
>>154190545
>Is Harley REALLY that popular
Yes. She's been popular more or less since she debuted as an unnamed Joker henchwench.
>or do they just keep pushing her (especially as a QUEER ICON) because who else do they have
She was popular long before that.

The reason that none of the other girls, except maybe Poison Ivy, took off to such a huge extent was mainly 1. Harley overshadowing them and dominating the conversation and 2. a lot of the other girls simply being less interesting, less attractive, less fleshed out, and getting a lot less screentime.

I know she was popular...for a while
I also know all her recent movies flopped and her big selling point is LGBT bullshitarry. Can anyone point to a classic Harley...anything...made in the last 15 years.

The best she has was the first SS because of her costume
>>
>>154190666
Mercy still did better than other DCAU originals, like Volcana, Baby Doll, or Roxy Rocket.
Probably because of her direct connection to Lex Luthor.
>>
>>154190736
>The best she has was the first SS because of her costume
That was one of the things that ruined Harley for good.
>>
>>154189238
Pretty annoying they got a pretty good cast for her in BvS, cause now it's wasted.
>>
>>154190574
Unfortunately, usually it's super annoying cause he's a fucking idiot or just pure evil or autistic and doesn't care and totally doesn't deserve her, but when it works, it works.
>>
>>154190834
She did at least influence the way Mercy is now drawn in the comics.

>Mercy Graves
Mercy was probably inspired by Luthor's driver.Same with Renee Montoya which feel like Maggie's .
DCAU people were probably fan of Byrne's superman
>>
>>154190760
SS's Death of the family should have been canon.
Her being one of the millions Harley made by Joker and dispossed when he was tired was a good twist and made sense for a literally who barely trained to not survive being Joker's right hand.

Love her, and I hope she appears in the DCU. It'd be really funny too considering Eve fucked over Lex and Engineer was a failure. She'd be both rolled into one
>>
>>154190760
Harley was already losing relevance. Her biggest showing was on BTAS. In the comics, they could never really figure out what to do with her.
She was a novelty and then it wore out.

That's my problem with it too yeah. It NEVER goes anywhere. Just once I'd love an ending where a bad guy's defeat includes him just retiring and settling with his henchman wife. And the good guys are like 'well as long as he isn't doing evil shit anymore because he's too busy focused on being a husband/father'.
>>
Sexy limo driver
>>
Cute that her and Lex are dating
>>
Hammerhead's cab driver in Spectacular Spider-Man was 100% based off this character.
>>
>>154191174
The problem is that with the Authority canceled, Engineer doesn't really have anywhere to go in the DCU, feels weird that they'd just get rid of her.
>>
>>154192320
>feels weird that they'd just get rid of her.
Comic book movies write out characters all the time? Mercy actually works better with the Lex dynamic anyway
>>
>>154189043
Harley has that "I can fix her [with my dick!]" vibe that Mercy didn't. Dudes don't want ice queens.
>>
Human Mercy, Amazon Mercy, or Cyborg Mercy?
>>
>>154188958
Shes the oft cyborg gal friday of Luthor.
She's hot as fuck but not sexual nor is she able to have her own personality because..superman doesnt allow her to work as a threat or a character.
And her existence and reason she follows luthor will humanize luthor in a way that the story cant allow.
>>
>>154191339
The driver is Myrna from the comics, who was also Hammerhead's henchwoman. Though she was more of a moll than a driver.
>>
>>154188958
She's alright, I liked how Williamson used her.
>>
>>154192448
All of them as the three Mercies.
>>
>>154188991
There's nothing wrong with Mercy as a character in TAS. She was just there to wear a sexy uniform and do henchman stuff, and she did both of those things fine. Not every secondary character needs to stray out of their lane and become a breakout fan favorite.
>>
>>154188958
sex
>>
>>154188958
I liked how they didn't explain how the Lazarus Rain somehow turned her into a cyborg, she just one now.
>>
>>154189238
This adaptation for some reason influenced all future interpretations of the character.
>>
>>154188958
I love Mercy. She should be a mainstay in all future Superman adaptations alongside Tess so you can have a fun dynamic where Tess and Mercy are in love with Lex and show it in different ways but Lex is more concerned with Superman. Mercy wants to kill Superman, Tess is a Superman fangirl, etc. Mercy thinks Clark is cute while Tess finds him to be dorky, etc. Maybe even throw in some Yuribait by having Tess dote on Mercy and Mercy protect her and save her whenever Lex chooses to be a dick towards Tess.
>>

That haircut does not work with the chauffeur cap.
>>
>>154197836
I think it looks fine.
>>
>>154190344
Mirin' those arms
>>
>>154195191
This. She works perfectly fine as a minor character. Lex is a genius but he is still human and can't be everywhere at once having a loyal and competent right hand henchwoman to run errands and beat up low level threats works perfectly fine as a character. Not every character needs to be directly tied to Superman or a threat to Superman some can just be characters who would exist in Supermans world.
>>
>>154188958
She should be used more in comicbooks. Like Livewire.
>>
>>154202400
>She should be used by Livewire, sexually
Is what I got from this
>>
>>154197799
Everyone loves the "competent Asian secretary" trope.
>>
>>154188958
I had a crush on her as a kid cause she had a cute outfit and could beat the fuck outta people
>>
>>154188958
TAS Mercy and the Young Justice cartoon Mercy are plappable. The rest I am indifferent to.
>>
>>154188958
It's easier to accept for whatever reason that a villain continuously fails and then gets up, brushes themselves off and tries again. When henchman fail the villain repeatedly, someone like Lex Luthor. They should be fired at the very least. Lex having a series of hot mercenary body guards that serve him until they fail too many times and then are replaced makes more sense or is a more entertaining thought to me.
>>
>>154190834
God I fucking hate Snyder. Multiple times he did that "Oh yeah I brought in this guy from the comics... and it's dead."
Usually the fucker's not even named on-screen. Christ he even off-screened Krypto seemingly out of nothing but spite.

Harley taking off where Mercy and Livewire failed tells me that it's all about the costume. Harley's design is just too strong, Mercy didn't have a chance with her dull grey chauffeur look

Character originally created for the Superman Animated show on WBKids in the lates 90s and early 2000s. She's the chauffuer and bodyguard of Lex Luthor in the cartoon.

Did Mercy ever even get a backstory?
I seriously don't know.

STAS does give her one, but it is a simple explanation that he lifted her out of poverty.

I honestly don’t think more is needed. Luthor is just a rich guy who took a poor girl, makes sense why she wants him.
