One aspect of Squidward that everyone overlooks is that he's an asshole to Spongebob even when it is not warranted, at least he did during seasons 1-3. Squidward makes fun of him for still receiving kisses from his grandma, he tried to ruin his friendship with Patrick, he made fun of him for believing in Santa, he pulled a harmful prank on him, he lived like a parasitic NEET in his house, etcHe goes out of his way to act like a jackass then acts like he's a victim when he gets karma'd.

Finally, look at the movie, Spongebob's big epiphany is that he might be childish, but that didn't stop him from doing all the stuff everyone said he couldn't do.At his core, Squidward is miserable because of his own outlook, but also because that oh-so "adult" lifestyle he preaches is worth jack shit when it's full of selfish, unsupportive and frankly boring people. For all of Spongebob's childishness, he never hesitates to be supportive and be his genuine self. squidward is a good artist, his subject (himself) may not be what appeals to most people but he puts his damn heart and soul into what he makes and he puts in the effort to try different mediums instead of sticking to just oneif squidward made art of anything besides himself, people would like his work more, but ultimately he is satisfied with his own work and isn't burnt out creatively.
