Why does Mulan think being a wife with kids isn't worthwhile?
>>
>>154194380
The movie establishes she has a lot of regard for her father while the arranged marriage thing seemed to reward the vapid and empty out those with passion.
Once she's been through war and got valor out of her system she's willing to get hitched with an honorable man.
>>
Because Disney wanted a whole generation of girls to grow up to be Disney Adults
>>
>>154194380
Never liked this shitty movie. Always hated any feminism shit. And Mulan admitting she did what she did to satisfy her own ego and not defend her family's life made her shit. Mulan is a shit movie. And also Mushu is an unlikable bastard he's the worst Disney sidekick ever. Worse than Gurgi from Dark Cauldron. At least Gurgi sacrificed himself because he knew he was trash. Mushu is a piece of shit who intentionally orchestrated events that would endanger the life of the family he's supposed to defend.

No

She didn't think that, she just didn't like going to the match maker or getting all dolled up for thing since she was pretty bad at.
It's the whole pride and prejudice thing of "I'd wish for a man to love me for what I am rather than what I can appear to be".

What? It was literally because they were going to conscript her dad who could barely walk.
>>
>>154194660
no, in the scene in the OP she literally admits to herself she didn't do it for her dad
>>
Thing about the original Mulan tale is it needed even more padding than a typical Disney fairy tale. Whole story is like a few pages.
She leaves, she goes to war, she goes to a battle, 12 year time skip and she's back home. She reveals to her soldiers she was a woman once it all ends. So even that was moved into the midpoint for dramatic effect.

It's sort of just a little snippet folktale. Weirdly enough, the movie does remove some of her additional motivation for going. In the story, she has a younger brother who isn't of age but who could be conscripted in a matter of years as the war rages on.
>>
>>154194678
Except she didn't? The whole shtick was that it was eating her up that to be a perfect bride she had to give up her tomboyish habits. Even when she tried to hide it for the sake of her family, it came out and she wound up blowing it hard. And that's why she had that whole "i'm sad" song
>>
>>154194642
No
>>
She had more immediate concerns than match making.
>>
>>154194739
Disney did that for just about every folktale, they cut out the stuff that wouldn't make sense for a movie.
>Aladdin had his extra djinn cut from the story.
>Cinderella's step sisters didn't have their eyes pecked out
>Snow White had to deal with 3 separate visits from the wicked witch, which would have made her look like a total dumbass for falling for it 3 times.
>Herc didn't even have to do any of his trials, it was all accomplished in a single montage
>>
>>154194775
>"Maybe I didn't go for my father. Maybe what I really wanted was to prove I could do things right, so when I look at the mirror I'd see someone worthwhile."
Do you not see the implication here?
>>
>>154194932
She's questioning why she did it since she failed at it and could get her family killed for it,
>>
>>154194380
Because it isn't. No one sane would choose to be a woman, especially in that period
>>
>>154194932
Yeah. She fucked up at being good wife material, so she wanted a win so her family wouldn't look at her with shame.

>she wanted to give them honor this way
yeah because nothing says honor like having your daughter fight your fights
she just wanted to know what male roles were like, let's be real, she clearly didn't know her place as her dad said

Ok, eddgeboy

But not denying the third world edgy jeet accusation
>>
>>154195146
>yeah because nothing says honor like having your daughter fight your fights
No, the honor is coming back home a war hero. Any kid being a veteran, even in ancient China, was the alternative way to getting the same bragging rights as having a doctor for a son. It's what you did when you knew your kids were morons that would fail the entrance exams.
>she just wanted to know what male roles were like, let's be real, she clearly didn't know her place as her dad said
No it was because the matchmaker said she failed at being a wife. Her only alternative option was to be a nun or fake being a soldier.
>>
>>154195146
>she just wanted to know what male roles were like
Nah, it was clearly an honor seeking thing.
She was averse to the actual guy stuff.
>>
>>154194380
I thought the movie was pretty clear about this
her father has spoiled her. She's his only child, and he's old. Very much like Jasmine's father and Ariel's father. He had kids way too late, only had one (or all girls in the case of Triton), and lost his wife. So he clung to the girls and spoiled them, then wondered why they misbehaved. Why the girl isn't happy to be like her mother, whom she barely if at all got to learn anything from, and who isn't here now to keep her on that path.

It's almost like the nuclear family is the only thing that works.
>>
>>154195190
I mean
they usually are. that's one thing they typically nail. when life or death is on the line, you don't deviate.

father spoiled her combined with arbitrary matchmaking being idiotic in the peasantry
>>
>>154196289
Are you purposely retarded?

The mom is alive and a character in the movie, and the dad didn't seem to spoil her, he just never squashed her tomboy tendencies. He was even upset at her for the disaster with the match maker
Hes also kinda old and a former warrior, his body is failing.
>>
>>154196449
... that was her mom? huh.
well I think I can salvage most of my point
>>
It is baffling that anyone looks at the gore horror of this world and says 'yep, I wanna have kids here.'

It's comical stuff. Someone sees their parent go through hellish surgery and the complications afterwards and then they say 'yep, still gonna have kids here!'

But alas, I know why people have kids here. Because it's not a real world. It's a game. And the texture of the game requires characters to populate it.
>>
>>154198123
Anyways, after I ascend from this world and go back home, I'm discontinuing this contrasting experiment. It is too ugly.

There's more to life than just being a mom and some dude's chick. Imagine if all your dreams, all aspirations you ever wanted to accomplish, and anything you'd want to be known as is washed away for simply "husband"

She would have to leave her previous family behind.
>>
>>154197990
You really can't
Mulan had an a mother, father, and grandmother, all of which told her to follow the traditional path like you say, she was terrible at making/keeping the time appropriate appearance and she went to war.

Again her father, while he didn't smack her, was upset at the trouble she caused and that she angered the match maker. She was a tomboy, she was terrible at acting fancy, thats it. Thats the conflict

She started out sincerely saving her father. Later on there was a point where she had the option to walk away without her deception being discovered. But she decided to stay and keep trying. That's what she was referring to. When she made the decision to stay, it was less about saving her father and more about finding a role where she could fit in.

That was the problem with her. She struggled to fit in. Before the meeting with the matchmaker, her family makes multiple comments that imply she's a bit of a fuck-up ("I'm going to pray some more", "we'll need more luck than I thought", "and even you can't blow it").

Mulan pleads the ancestors for success with the matchmaker. After working on her self-esteem, she makes a move on Shang at the end of the movie. I don't think she dislikes the idea of being a wife with kids. She was just bad at her social role and insecure about it, until she managed to get some wins and build more self-esteem.

I'm glad with feminism women can now experience the privilege of doing powerpoints for a boss who sees them as a number (still not as icky as doing laundry for a loving husband). It truly was all worth it.
>>
>>154194380
She absolutely doesn't mind doing that, anon. Shesjust bad at attracting males unless they like men

> nuclear family

nuclear family is a modern american invention after the industrial revolution.
people used to live more like clans where everyone, entire generations lived together never separating, grandparents, child, grand children all together and a child was not a property of the parents but of the clan, theres was this comunal effort to rise a kid divided among all menbers of the clan.

i know it's supposed to just be played for laugh but for the matriarch of the family she's incredibly incompetent
probably time to send her to the forest to fend for herself
