Triumph and Torment had it best imo - Doom's a sorcerer, but he's not a great one either. he didn't devote himself to sorcery like other magic types, especially since he's also into technology (]moreso than magic). but, he's still clever, and he learns fast, so he's still a credible threat in the world of magic and of course, just because of his backstory, he will always be tied to the mystical side of Marvel. even if he's more technology-based now, his origins are rooted in sorcery and the mystical side because of his mother
