I know this sounds a bit harsh, but sadly it's true.

He has a very distinctive "art-style" as opposed to to other Duck artists, he draws very detailed and has an extensive use of shadows, which no other artist does as far as I know and in my opinion that's the "problem".

He hides behind these details his absolute lack of talent. His art is marvelous on a technical level and pleasant to look at, but there's nothing behind it. It has no soul.

All the other "big" artists like Fecchi, Rota, Hubbard, Scarpa, Barks (Rosa is supposed to be his spiritual successor) they all manage to keep their art simple and alive, Rosa can't do this.

It is also pretty clear that aside from the university and the Duck comics the man never drew anything else in his life.

I mean it's not a bad thing, his plotlines are great and I appreciate him trying to give the Ducks a bit of death, but nonetheless, you can teach a man how to draw, but you can't teach a man talent.

Sorry if it's a bit of a ramble

"Ah, but that is just what I cannot teach. I cannot teach her to have a soul. Look, monsieur, play the piano, is not about the fingers. Done with the fingers, yes. But the music, she is inside. Inside, monsieur..."

I don't think he lacks talent necessarily, but Carl Barks' is a really hard act to follow. Can Rosa draw? Yes. Is he on Barks' level? No, but no one is.

He is not the best artist for ducks and I think everyone knows that. There are some insanely impressive French and Italian artists working on them now. It is mostly notable how he does it on his own but is not meant to be seen as his strength or the draw to his comics.
He is so revered because his writing of the characters and plot development is impeccable. It is such on another level compared to almost any Donald comic content ever made

If he can draw on this level he isn't talentless. He might be a hack, but not talentless.
>>
>>154216508
He practiced it? If you would ask him to draw something that isn't a duck, like a human woman for example, here's a high chance he wouldn't be able to do it.
>>
>>154216508
I definitely don't think Don Rosa can be called talentless drawing on the level he did given that he had no formal art training and was pretty much entirely self taught, the closest he got was getting a bachelors in civil engineering.

Earl Rosa stories where he copied Bark's panels are kinda egrecious.
Also, I dislike his treatment of the Beagle Boys and some of his Scrooge characterization.

Still good and I consider him better than Scarpa honestly

His peppers are great tho

Idk if there's a better example but shit pops up when you google it

Nobody comes out of the womb with the ability to draw well. Everybody has to practice to get good.

I personally love his art style but I get why Barks didn't consider him to be his successor. Rosa is much more "heavier" than Barks, and most of the time it works very well but I tends to get little bit too serious some times. Barks never get too deep with his ducks and that worked perfectly.
Since we are talking about duck artists, Vicar was pretty great. Didn't write (I think) but he drew so many stories that his style is what I imagine first when I think about Donald Duck comics.

Vicar was always the "normal" duck artist or however you wanna call it. I think he was basically the opening act of every issue I read growing up and his art style was so solid and typical that I genuinely think of his art style version when I think of Donald and adjacent characters.

You don't read Rosa for the art. The art is functional, but not slick like a lot of other artists.

You read Rosa for the stories, the characterization, the intricate historical detail, the humor and the dedication to Barks continuity.

If that's not your thing, don't read him. But don't knock him because other people do like his stuff.

Mr. Rosa, I'm sorry. I was really not trying to offend you.

>Don Rosa has more talent than OP, his father and grandfather and grandgrandfather together multiplied by 1000.
Okay but is that really impressive?
>>
>>154216544
So what? He draws duck comics

He's great.

He says as much himself.
