Removing him basically renders the entire Legion moot and unable to exist so the solution is that the Time Trapper (basically being the embodiment of time) created a pocket universe with a fake Superboy and this is where the Legion now happened so his plans can play out normally.Superman editorial eventually decides this isn't good enough and wants ALL Superboy references gone so Superboy and the Time Trapper are killed which starts a whole thing where Glorith is the new Time Trapper and Mon-El is sent back to the present, becomes the hero Valor and basically takes Superboy's place in Legion history. This happens around the same time as 5YL and sales drop so Zero Hour is used to reboot the Legion totally.Reboot Legion goes along just fine and is eventually retooled in a darker direction by DnA and relaunced as simply The Legion. Sales weren't great (but the book had critical acclaim) so in 2004 DC decides to reboot the Legion AGAIN which leads to what's called the Threeboot (since it's the third iteration). Threeboot lasts until 2009 when Johns decides he wants to bring back the original Legion (really just a weird sort Not Quite version of it) in the Lightning Saga. This version is called the Retroboot Legion for obvious reasons.Legion of 3 Worlds happens and both the Reboot and Threeboot teams get raped. At the end of it the Reboot Legion become multiversal travelers and the Threeboot is revealed to be the Earth-Prime Legion. Neither are seen again, Retroboot gets a shortlived book, then the Flashpoint reboot happens and it doesn't matter anymore because DC's continuity is now as fucked as the Legion's has been since the late '80s.

I was a fan as a kid reading pre-Zero Hour, but that reboot was when I felt like one of the gang. I grew to love them & their relationships. But I also know people love different eras for various reasons. It was the trickiest piece to crack.
>>154264435The first one was kind of necessary because Crisis and specifically Superman editorial had made the continuity a mess and then the Bierbaums drove everyone else off. The big problem was that they should have launched new books and not continued the numbering from the pre-reboot books. Threeboot was the completely unnecessary one. DnA tanked sales but they should have retooled it with a new writer and direction. Because of Threeboot though every time interest in the current iteration of the Legion seems to wane they just go "time for a reboot" which makes it even more incomprehensible to new readers and alienates whatever is left of older ones.
At this point I'm just hoping more of the older stuff gets collected
