ANOTHER INDIE ANIMATED PILOT THAT NONE OF YOU KNOW ABOUT https://youtu.be/0M2BtFf5Eg8
looks gay, hope it never grows into something more
>>154237464>indie pilot>furry shitEVERY FUCKING TIME
>vhs filterWhy do zoomers misuse the fuck out of this stupid filter? Oh wait, because zoomers don't know how a VHS works nor grew up with them. And to clarify I'm not talking about 1997 - 2000 Gen Z, I'm talking more about zooms born in 2005ish so don't get your panties in a twist...
>>154237499I thought the main character was human actually.
>open catalogue>see words “INDIE” and “PILOT”>next to words is image containing fursloplike clockwork
>>154237464Looking at the the thumbnail and title.>"MY HELLISH LIFE">Furry character>Urban setting>Pink tinted colors
This game and watch inspired platformer the guy made is interesting.
>>154237464Cute
>>154237541same reason why backrooms is so popular, we all wish to go back to a simpler time where we were either very young or may not have been born yet
>>154237464>shitty retro filterMeh
>>154237549Okay upon actually watching it that’s not a furry character, it’s a guy wearing a hat with horns attached to it
>>154237544>bright yellow sclera and red pupils>animal nose>horns>human
there are actual humans in this pilot. If anything this feels hellaverse inspired but I am not even sure on thatThe MC's roommate is a robot so it seems to be anything goes
>>154237638>>154237631
>>154237638Yeah probably actually
>>154237541>>154237583I sympathize with younger zoomers longing for a simpler time, especially one that I grew up in, but at the very least I wish they'd do research instead of slapping on a VHS filter and calling it a day
Finished watching and that was actually very cute, at no point did I feel like wanting to close the vid. It’s a bit weird seeing modern things referenced with the old vhs aesthetic on top, but it’s weird in a good way if that makes sense
>>154237464I thought for a moment that he was Niko from Oneshot when I saw the thumbnail.
>>154237464Neat!
>>154239015Thank you
>>154237556It's GOTTA be on purpose by now
>>154240568It is not a furry character it is just weirdly drawn humans.
It is an adult SOL with bizarre characters just being the norm.
>>154241149It is Scott Pilgrim but Chilean instead of Canadian
>indie animation is uninspired nostalgiabait>indie games are uninspired nostalgiabait>indie music is fucking dead
>>154241130most new gen furries are exactly that
>>154237464I didn't hate it. If he can make regular episodes then this could get an audience. >>154241178I am glad I am not the only person who thought "Scott pilgrim". Granted Scott pilgrim had action. It wasn't the best, it was meh at most but the action did prevent it from just being a SoL. This needs something ridiculous happening to prevent this being mundane though and through. It already has non-human characters. It should go all the way and add some weird obstacle like a monster or problem so there's a bit more conflict than "I feel butterflies trying to talk irl with to a girl I had a couple of gaming sessions with".
>>154237464Better than others, good job. I like the designs. From a story standpoint it's pretty cookie cutter and feels like they typical indie-short story. But all in all it was good. 6/10.
>>154237541>>154237845It’s really a shame atp, and I’m saying this as a 24 year old. I still use VHS to this day and I work with it on my projects. There are a couple of really good filters out there that look pretty good but even then it’s not the same to me, the faux artifacts are too uniform. It takes some learning but you CAN write modern video onto a vhs tape and with authentic results. I’ll post pictures tomorrow if anyone is interested about my setup and if the thread is not dead. I hate being the nerd but I dislike even more the filters out there that don’t even mimic analog artifacts but rather those from digital8 tapes but they are still referred to as “analog” when that’s not true in the slightest.
>>154237464>VHS effectCan’t wait for this trend to die out already
>>154237464Holy shit, this felt like work to get through. I don’t think the idea was bad, but the writing and pacing was just fucking awful. Example…dude is playing the game and you pretty much know where it’s going, but the sequence goes from 1:38 to fucking 3:09 just to explain what we’ve already figured out…he recognized her voice from a game. Did we really need each and every character to log off, the awkward one sided banter, the montage, etc? You can establish their online rapport more efficiently. I feel like we were supposed to find the MCs awkwardness amusing, but it was just annoying. It felt like they were trying to take cues from Home Movies or Dr. Katz, but without any of the entertaining dialog. The art is serviceable. Not enough to carry the production on its own, but it works and isn’t detracting. The music was fucking awful. Sounded stock. Some of the drama and humor could have been punched up with a real score. Acting was solid despite the terrible writing. The actors did what they could, but most of the issues were out of their hands. The VHS filter is annoying. It doesn’t add anything. It’s the new version of slapping chromatic aberration over everything. It very much feels like one person was controlling everything, but they could have used at least a 2nd in command to speed check them. They really needed someone to help with editing at the animatic phase. Also, they desperately need to study cinematography to understand how to better tell stories visually. If the creator is dead set on this dumpster fire of a script, they need to at least create more movement and sense of pacing through more dynamic shots, perspectives, and cuts.
>>154242991Here’s an example of bad cinematography. The humor of the scene is supposed to come from the fact that the MC is in turmoil over the discovery that the voice he heard may be his friend/crush from the game but is stuck in this conversation he doesn’t want to have. Most of it is a wide shot between the characters which doesn’t help tell the story. It’s just stagnant. If we wanted to push the drama of the scene, the camera should crop close in on the MC’s face to help push the feeling of being trapped. Show the MC shifting their eyes and then cut to other objects in the room to show that he’s distracted and not really paying attention to what the other character is saying. Maybe cut to whatever little bit the MC can see of the main female character (just a hand or a boot or a silhouette)l then cut in super close to the guy talking about movies to push the feeling that the MC is trapped. Meanwhile the score can help build tension throughout. When the MC finally gets out of the conversation, there’s a sense of release, but you helped the audience feel as trapped and anxious as the MC in that moment which makes the scene feel more interesting and really pushes the joke. The stagnant two shot with occasional wide cut to single characters doesn’t do anything emotionally, so instead of the scene being about the MC being tormented by getting stuck in a conversation when he really wants to be investigating the mysterious voice, we just get idle filler chit chat.
>>154243154The perspective can be used to tell the psychological component of the story. The dialog is just what the characters are saying, but the framing/shots/music tell the story of what the characters are thinking. In picrel, where the character hears the girl’s voice for the first time, they could have pushed the “crush” aspect harder. Slow down in that moment. Make the visuals more dreamy. Change the colors to softer pastels to show how the MC feels. You could even put a twinkle in her eye, and maybe something like a harp flourish in the music to push the idea that the character is (potentially) romantically intrigued. But suspending time in that moment and pushing the idea that the character is really lost in thought will make the sudden interruption of the guy interjecting into the daydream to talk about movies a lot funnier. Yeah, a lot of that stuff is kind of cheesy, but leaning into the tropes really works sometimes.
>>154242868What other indie pilots are made with it?
>>154237464>another show about hell
>>154243908IT is not actually
>>154244016It's not?
>>154237464Literally who?
>>154237541It's chromatic aberration for armature animators. They're insecure and hope the effect hides and distracts the imperfections.
>>154237464>VHS filter>animated like a flash cartoon>dude my mundane life living with my quirky roommate is so quirky and wacky>oh my GAWD is that a cute girl in a VIDEO GAME?!This could have been half as long and it would still be 4 minutes and 5.5 seconds too long.
>>154237464There are a lot of useless shots in this. I think a good question to ask yourself is what purpose each shot is serving. 0:29 - Why is dude looking in the shop window? 0:31 What's with the banter with the shop girl? Almost all of it adds nothing to the scene. It doesn't give the audience any info, it's not funny, it doesn't really establish characters beyond what simple body language could have. The whole "I have a name" "I know your name". Cool. Cool, cool cool...cool. Some of the banter is fine, but most of it could get cut out and we wouldn't lose anything. Why is there a whole thing with green salsa chips? It's not a joke and it never comes back.03:53 - The inner dialog is useless. We already know why he's trying to get a look at who the character is. That could have been established visually by just showing him kind of straining to see who was talking and showing that the character is still out of view or somehow obscured. 04:11 - do we have to watch the character piecing it together. No shit. that's the game he plays. we JUST learned that. He can have the moment of realization, but dragging out him putting it together step by step is agonizing. "No Way! Demons and Dragons Online? That's the game I play. And the girl must play that game. And I met a girl with her same voice playing that game. She sounds just like her. That must mean that it's her. It has to be right? No, I'm crazy. But what if it is is her? Oh my gosh, let me continue talking about this because we'd really like this pilot to be at least 10 minutes long..." Fuck me. Just move it along already. 04:32 - This actor is fucking terrible. Holy shit. What is the point of this? You can have the collision gag without the worlds shittiest actor recording with the worlds shittiest mic setup.
>>15424571805:13 - This section is necessary, but I think the creators are too in love with the words. When there are along bouts of dialog like this, just showing the characters standing there and talking is not visually interesting. It's why in both live action and in animation, there needs to be something happening. The characters are going on a walk, or they're getting coffee, or they're playing a game...you need SOMETHING so you can cut to different visuals, show some action, and have the screen feel more kinetic. Venture Bros does a spoof on this by making Doc and Dean lay on a moving walkway in one scene - it was their way of subverting the need to make the characters go for a walk. >voices by Alan by FluffBatwutSeries could be cool, but Guppyroll really needs to book up on visual storytelling and should hire an editor to cut down all the useless crap or at least figure out how to make those long stretches more entertaining. I like the characters, I like the premise, and even though the VHS filter was a useless gimmick that felt like it distracted more than it added, the art in general was good enough. It just dragged quite a bit and the writer sucked his own dick too much. Also, credit your god damned writer, musician, sound designer, mixer, etc. Even if people wore multiple hats, there was at least a writer on this that you didn't even bother to credit.
>>154245611it makes sense for stuff like Punch Punch Forever where the whole premise is that it was a bootleg fansub that was previously thought lost media, but in this case it seems like it was baby's first video editing project and they just dicked around with filters and clapped their hands because it made things look different. It's the sort of thing that probably feels cool when you first do it, but once you have any experience at all, effects like that feel gratuitously garish. The best post production is when it makes things look better but the audience wouldn't have any clue that anything was done at all. It blends seamlessly into the production.
>>154245831>When there are along bouts of dialog like this, just showing the characters standing there and talking is not visually interestingYeah. Anime uses a lot of tricks to get around this inexpensively. They'll do a slow pan over a background shot, or cut to loops of other action (car driving, cat sleeping, water droplets falling into a bucket, close crop of character hand with occasional boil). Usually they'll use a couple of those tactics cut together to keep things from getting stale. It's a way to cheat a sense of motion without having to do too much.
>>154237464what's with indie animation not crediting their crew? I noticed fuckyroll made sure to put his OWN name in the credits, but I guess everyone else aside from the voice actors can go fuck themselves.
the pilot that ruined a generation
>>154237464>girl plays video game>chud instantly forms crush because he's heard her say 3 words. Literally. She wished him goodnight. And it gave him a boner. >immediately gets creepy>chud is supposed to be relatable for thisincel-core
>>154246264i like this pilot though
>>154246264That ain't hazbin hotel
>>154237464WHY IS IT ALL FURRY SLICE OF LIFE?!
>>154237464It's cute. If the dialogue was more fast paced it would improve it considerably. I admire how awkward the main character is, but the relationship with the gamer girl feels pretty unrealistic, a guy as insecure as the main character would just get instantly rejected by the girl. A cute girl with traditionally male interests can just pick and choose man to date. Also the guy talking about the Avengers looks like he came directly from a Doobus Goobus sketch, kinda cringe. The 4:3 is nice but the VHS distortion filter is just visual clutter, it's way too overdone in the indie space. Back in the day people would spend thousands on LaserDisc anime releases to get a better picture quality.
I like it better than all the pilots about trauma and full of therapy speak. Slice of life nonsense is a welcome change to the “deepest lore” style of contemporary Internet content.
>>154241814Are you still around? I'm extremely interested in your results and will definitely love to know more about the digital to analog process.
>>154247503And yet people still bitch about slice of life/co/ deserves nothing
>>154237464ok gonna watch it in a bit
>>154247379>a guy as insecure as the main character would just get instantly rejected by the girlThis is not your diary. Some cute girls actually think nervous nerds are cute, but incels tend to decide the world operates in a specific way and then use that to limit themselves.
>>154248649Thanks for telling everyone. Please make sure to update the thread when you start watching it because we all give a shit. you absolute faggot
>indie animation
>>154247595Make sure it's the right resolution, then use the digital output of your video card to a digital to analog converter, connect that to the VCR, and record. For the record, VHS records at much higher quality than people seem to remember. Like people trying to use tape cassettes to process audio for the lofi hip hop trend, it turns out both VHS and tape cassettes are incredibly capable recording mediums that preserve a lot of detail. If you're hoping to get fuzzy warbly "analog glitch" type qualities, you're going to be sorely disappointed, but it will impart a bit of the medium on the image. Just probably not as much as you'd hoped.
>>154237464This is complete ass cheeks. Do zoomers really like this faux nostalgia bait because it just annoys me with its anachronisms
>>154241688Something ridiculous is a good idea. I found this hard to sit through storywise, even though it was charming visually. Something to amp up the excitement would be good.
>>154250933It needs better cinematography. That's on the storyboarders. I think the story was serviceable and the art was fine, but the way each sequence was framed was stagnant and boring. Storyboarding is essentially visual storytelling. I think some of the more agonizing moments could have been made more interesting had they boarded the sequences differently. A sequence should not just be about what the characters are saying, but about what they're feeling. You broadcast that through cinematography and music. >>154243154>>154245831
>>154246557I like it too but it's undeniable the negative influence Kitty Bobo has on these indie pilots
>>154251023Please don’t use my comment to advertise your posts, we saw them
>>154237464i hate that we're living in a loop of the "#bettercartoon" shit but actually having to see it pushed harder since it's not just tweets with a couple dumb drawings. back then it was contained to collection threads where the whole topic was one thing, and at worst you'd just see some dumbass post "actually, this might be kinda good" to something obviously retarded. now it's just an oversaturation of everything since everyone's shitting out videos so they all need to be posted individually
>>154251557I honestly don't see the problem with more people making stuff.
>>154245831I cant prove it, but I think the creator recorded the audio first and then tried to animate around his script. I dont think any part of this "pilot" was boarded
Creator posted more art.
>>154246499Apparently this was made by a husband and wife duo.
>>154251603Don't be disingenous. The problem comes from a constant cycle of the same dumbass things twitter always makes but now needs constant individual threads for. People making an actual variety of good and interesting things would be great, but it's the exact same problem as the 'better cartoon' shit. The problem there wasn't them saying "make original content instead of rehashing old shit", it was that it was the same gay shit you always see online.
>>154251707Do you storyboard before recording lines or do you storyboard after recording lines?
>>154246264It's strange how "ahead" of its time it was and how much of it was of its time. The style and pacing is mimicked to this day, but you see very clearly how Gen X these designs are and the setting itself is.I think Mission Hill did it better though. Some people mentioned Dr. Katz/Home Movies in this thread but anything Tom Snyder affiliated is in a league of its own, even taking inspiration from it come off very strong because of how unique they were.
>>154251880Before.
>>154237464>thumbnail is completely normal>click play>bait and switch retarded VHS filterkeep the damn thing. im tired of this shit.
>>154251707>the creator recorded the audio first and then tried to animate around his scriptyeah, that's how it generally works with script driven shows, but there are still storyboards unless they just jumped RIGHT into animating which is crazy and will waste a ton more time. Usually with a script driven show you'd: Write scriptRecord AudioMake the "radio play" (this is the first chance to start working on timing)Storyboard to the radio playMake the animatic (this is the second chance to tweak timing)And once you have the animatic, you can get multiple phases of production going at once (animation, music, sound design, backgrounds, etc).
>>154251603The more the better, and they’ll only develop more skill for the future by putting work out
>>154251860I'm not being disingenuous. I don't care if every single animated short/pilot people make is absolute dogshit. I think more people taking the initiative to make things is a good thing whether it's good or bad.
>>154251945I think ayrt knows that and are expressing the assumption that boarding was skipped hence saying they dont think it was boarded
>>154251880>>154251900>Do you storyboard before recording lines or do you storyboard after recording lines? It depends. If the show is board driven, it would be before. Usually the writers will sketch out the general plot of what happens in an episode, then the storyboarders will map out the episode and essentially write the actual lines that the characters say. THEN you'd record audio. In a script driven show (where the writers are writing an actual traditional script line for line), the script is written, the dialog is recorded, the radio play is made, and then the boards are made to that.
>>154251971>boarding was skippedif that's true, that's fucking crazy. Definitely the harder way to go.
>>154251859That explains why its so chuddy
>>154246264Theres nothing wrong with it, its just that the really modern format that worked in 2001 becomes insufferable once you apply it to any year past 2011 or so.
>>154237499Furshit makes money, money makes pilots, furshit pilots are more likely to profit.
>>154247379Youre right but the creators are Chilean and generally people there are more sociable, actually know their neighbors, and open to meeting people they run into in real life. If this was in the US he'd be seen as a creep and told to use a dating app instead of harassing women.
>>154237464>MY HELLISH--
>>154246264This wouldn't've happened if Cartoon Network had simply PICKED IT UP FOR SERIES
>>154237464>>154237647>VHS filter cringe and overdone
>>154252269This shit is not gonna make money lol
>>154237464This one reminds me of the good ol' days in the 2000's. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Donated a solid $50 to them.
>>154256324>This one reminds me of the good ol' days in the 2000's.Lol. This is like what half of indie animation tries to do nowadays(and most of the creators were children back in the 00s)
>>154256337I thought the LSMark one was fun too because it took a 2000s style and gave it a more grounded feel, the juxtaposition was interesting. Though given recent events I'm not sure I'll be following it as closely anymore. Maybe he'll be more careful with his cartoon show not making insulting mistakes as opposed to his reviews but it did slow me down a bit on him.
>>154237499Any furry waifu in there?
>>154254914It went up against Kids Next Door
>>154254914Yea because we all know derivative concepts only happen if the original is allowed room to breathe and fully present itself.
>>154256398Lol
>>154241178>>154252441I miss when Chileans made sleazy web animations about dicks and gooning.
