Or watching EOE with Death and Rebirth!By contrast, the pilot of Digital Circus did absurdly well BECAUSE despite the production pipeline, it came across as standalone having established a formula (a-plot about psychodrama, b-plot about wacky adventure) and status quo while setting the stage for the rest of the story. If anything, GLITCH is proving why you NEED the pilot to be emotionally standalone even if it is still "chapter one" - for general audiences, having the introduction emotionally resolve itself makes things safe and inviting while also not pressuring them to immediately return to tune in with a sense of urgency. This sort of dynamic is why TV series tend to see a significant drop off after the first episode/seasons but pick up in viewership once it starts reaching the conclusion.

A big issue I never see brought up is the fact this whole premise entails ensuring nothing actually changes for the better.Like, the protagonist’s goal is to make sure the villain wins. That means no matter how nasty the villains get, the hero can’t be able to beat them. This isn’t a big deal in a more cartoony game, but imagine something like God of War or Manhunt where the villains are genuinely evil pieces of shit whose plans for their world would make destruction almost a mercy.The question of “is a bad status quo better than complete annihilation?” is the type of premise that fits perfectly in something more philosophical like Star Trek or the Twilight Zone, but the tone is far more jokey than it should be and most of the characters don’t really feel like their survivors of world destruction. Like imagine Miss Info and Fold acting similarly but they’re far more insane because they come from worlds that aren’t used to the level of evil that “let entire worlds be destroyed and kill everyone” entails.
Gameoverse is a lot better when you realize that Kit is the actual antagonist.

my problem with gameoverse is the two rules keeping the premise from tearing apart at the seams kill it at the same time. "characters cannot harm anyone in their native game" and "characters cannot mention the gameoverse" means the heroes really cant do anything and are pretty much relegated to side characters in their own show. its essentially an action show but no action is allowed from the MCs themselves.
