Why did Disney never make cartoons based on the Carl Barks comics during the golden age of animation? The Donald Duck cartoons they made in the 40s and 50s are boring as fuck by comparison. Most of them aren't even funny or clever in any way. Did Walt not see how much better the writing and world building was in those comics?

Because nobody cared about autismos’ opinions back then.

They tried, going off of a story in one of the Gladstone squarebound albums from awhile back. Reportedly at the request of someone in the animation department, Barks actually drafted a cartoon plot for an Uncle Scrooge short, showing Scrooge go through layers of agony trying to get rid of a money-chewing rat while Donald kicks back and relaxes. But someone in the pipeline said a guy that goes that nuts about money isn't funny, so they settled on making Uncle Scrooge & Money instead, hoping to get the same sort of attention Donald in Mathmagicland did (it didn't).

This art style cannot be separated in my mind from his duck porn. Based. Duck damsels in antebellum south clothes, girl ducks abducted by pirates, princess ducks, and I think even ones that look like prostitute ducks if memory serves correctly. Might be exaggerating but I do know he draws ducks with cleavage showing. The crazy horny old man.

I remember one of the Gladstone comics having a few storyboards from a potential Scrooge cartoon and it looked like they would have just turned him into a generic Richie Rich style character with all of the jokes being "Look how much money he has."

Genuinely, isn't that what DuckTales was supposed to be?

Unrelated, I should get back to reading Carl Barks' work. I got a few of the big volumes. I think I read through Vol 5.

I absolutely disagree. Donald's cartoons during the 1940s are some of the best from that golden era of cartoons. I mean how can you say it's boring when Donald was featured a lot in WW2 cartoons? The only thing I understand is that if you don't mean the cartoons with Chip and Dale, Spike the bee and that bear, that's a work thanks to Jack Hannah so Donald is relegated to a lower level. Although Hannah also had great parts for Donald like Trick or Treat, Clown of the Jungle and Donald's Day Off.

As for Barks, well Barks wrote most of the scripts for Donald cartoons, so the credit for the popularity of Donald in cartoons goes to Barks before he got involved in the comics world. Yes, there was one script in which there would have been a confrontation between Donald and Scrooge, but that idea did not develop because Disney management did not find it desirable because they did not like Scrooge. That's all you need to know.

I mean, yeah. So they did make a cartoon very loosely based on it. OP is asking for a more accurate adaptation, but there is already one. I wouldn't expect an accurate adaptation of ancient comics, even if Carl Barks is rightfully getting attention among comic fans.

Because Disney put in all their focus on features rather then 2-3 realers with the ducks.

Imagine if all of Disney's canon movies were 100% about Donald Duck.

They could’ve made an entire adventure feature film based on one of Carl Barks’s stories in the 50s and it would’ve been way better than anything they did in that decade.

...Anon. Barks worked on those. He literally started out as an animator and writer for Donald shorts. His first comic (Pirate Gold) started out as the script and boards for a Donald Duck feature film that never materialized (due to the war IIRC).

Supposed to be, yes. In practice Duck Tales shits all over Barks' work and legacy.

Carl was a freelancer, he was got paid by page.

He never try enter the company, so Disney never pay him more.
